Chapter 53 Restless
Mia was spot on that Diana was totally trying to grab Charles' attention and worm her way back into the Percy Group. No wonder she hadn't been showing up at the Spencer Group; she had other plans.
Today, Charles was playing favorites and just let Diana off the hook. 'No way! I can't fall for Diana's tricks. The only woman by Charles' side should be me, Clara!' With that thought, Clara gave a sinister smile, but it tugged at the wound on her face, making her wince in pain.
The most urgent thing now was to get to the hospital, but the company entrance was packed with people. She couldn't let anyone see her like this, so Clara let her hair down and grabbed a scarf from her bag to wrap around her face. Finally, she dared to go downstairs and catch a cab to the hospital.
Even though Clara's face looked serious, some ointment and waiting for the swelling to go down would do the trick. The doctor and nurse gave her strange looks, wondering how a perfectly fine girl ended up like this.
But they didn't ask questions, staying professional. They just prescribed the meds and gave her some instructions.
After picking up the medication, Clara felt really uncomfortable being alone in the hospital. She immediately called Mia, and as soon as the call connected and she heard that familiar voice, Clara couldn't help but cry out, "Mom."
Mia was getting a facial treatment. Hearing Clara's tone, she was so scared that she immediately took off her mask and sat up. "What happened, Clara? Why are you crying? Someone bullied you?"
Clara was sobbing uncontrollably, "It was that bitch Diana. She slapped me dozens of times, and Charles even helped her."
After Clara briefly explained what had happened, Mia's face grew darker and darker. That bitch Diana actually dared to bully Clara.
Mia asked, "Clara, don't worry. I'll come to you. Where are you?"
Clara gave the hospital's location. Twenty minutes later, Mia saw Clara sitting on a hospital bench. Clara's cheeks were swollen, and her eyes were red from crying, looking very pitiful.
Mia was both angry and heartbroken. She hugged Clara and cried for a while and then personally applied the ointment for her.
Clara winced in pain but didn't dare make a big expression, fearing it would pull on the wound. "Mom, I was careless this time. Tomorrow, I'll go back to the Percy Group and make sure that Diana doesn't snatch Charles away."
Mia, seeing things more clearly than Clara, gently comforted her, "Don't go looking for him now. Mr. Percy is angry. Let's not provoke him. All men are the same; the more you cater to them, the more they disdain you. You have to take it step by step."
Clara suddenly understood. No wonder Charles had become more tolerant of Diana after the divorce. Diana used to try to please him, but now she kept her distance from Charles.
"Mom, what should I do now? I can't just let her get away with hitting me," Clara asked urgently.
Mia sighed, noting that Clara lacked wisdom, "Don't go back yet. Mr. Percy will be even angrier if he sees you. For the next few days, eat less and take care of your face. Men like delicate women. Your father will introduce you to some connections at the company. Show Mr. Percy you're not just beautiful, but capable. You'll outshine Diana."
Clara felt aggrieved hearing this. She had been at the company for days without making any progress. The thought of having to share a space with Diana made her feel sick.
After applying the ointment and comforting her for a while, Mia took Clara home. As soon as they entered, they saw Nathan watching financial news.
Mia made some noise on purpose to get Nathan's attention. Her eyes turned red, and tears started to fall. Nathan was startled, asking, "What's wrong, honey? Who messed with you?"
Mia pulled Clara over and revealed her swollen face. For a moment, Nathan almost didn't recognize Clara. When he realized what had happened, Clara also started crying. Two women, one calling "Dad" and the other "Honey," crying one after the other, gave him a headache.
But they were his family, so Nathan patiently comforted them. Only then did he piece the story together from their fragmented words. After hearing it, veins bulged on Nathan's forehead. That Diana was becoming more and more arrogant, daring to hit Clara in front of Charles.
Seeing Nathan angry, Mia spoke at the right moment, "Honey, we can't let Diana bully Clara like this. Reach out to your connections. Clara needs to make a mark at the Spencer Group to get Mr. Percy's attention. Our family's future depends on you, honey!"
"Dad, you can't just sit back anymore! If Diana returns to the Percy Family, things won't end well for us," Clara urged.
Although Nathan was practically retired, he still had his old relationships. If he was willing to maintain them, there was still a chance. Moreover, the Spencer Group was not what it used to be, especially with the Percy Group's support. Those people wouldn't dare say anything just out of respect for the Percy Group.
Seeing Mia and Clara crying pitifully, Nathan clenched his fists and said in a deep voice, "Tomorrow, I'll reach out to those friends and talk to them one by one!" After saying that, Nathan hugged Mia and Clara to comfort them.
Clara finally felt a bit better, thinking, 'Diana, you're all alone now. Let's see how you fight me!'
Over at the Spencer Villa, Evelyn was tenderly applying ointment to Diana's face, while Robert was holding Cecil, trying to entertain him, though he wasn't very good at it.
Cecil raised his hand and slapped Robert's glasses off. Robert fumbled on the carpet for a while before finding them. When he picked up Cecil again, he leaned his head back to keep the child from reaching his face.
The sight made Diana laugh. Evelyn spoke in a resentful tone, but her actions were gentle, "Ms. Spencer, don't confront Ms. Williams head-on. She hits hard."
Hearing this, Diana's face fell, and she asked in a deep voice, "What? Has she hit you before?"
Evelyn nodded, complaining softly, "Many of the previous servants were beaten by her. Sometimes she pinched, sometimes she slapped, but she was the master, and no one dared to resist."
Hearing this, Diana felt she had gone too easy on Clara today. So she patted Evelyn's head and comforted her, "Next time, I'll put a bag over her head and beat her up again."
Evelyn was also cheered up by her, smiling shyly. "Ms. Spencer, it's done. Don't wash your face tonight; let the ointment work."
"Evelyn, come help me. I can't hold this child anymore," Robert called for help. Evelyn quickly took Cecil, and strangely, he became very well-behaved in her arms. This made Robert feel a bit defeated, muttering, "It really takes talent to take care of a child."
Seeing Diana free, Robert turned to ask her, "How did the talks with the old employees go? Any progress?"
Diana nodded; things were going smoother than she had expected. "They do have something on Nathan, so I need them to lure him out so I can catch him in one go."
Robert was a bit worried, fearing Diana might use extreme measures, so he added a few words. "This isn't a simple matter. We should gather more evidence; he won't get away."
Diana nodded but didn't directly respond. Since she was seeking excitement, she would go all the way. As long as Nathan behaved, it would be just ordinary financial crime. If he tried to make a move, Diana would ensure he would lose everything.
