Chapter 33 Clara Joins the Spencer Group
Clara, who was hanging around nearby, lit up the moment she heard she could run the company. She looked super proud.
No matter how hard Diana tried, Charles still handed the Spencer Group to Clara just because she said so.
Clara jumped right into her act, sounding all sincere. "Diana, Mr. Percy is doing this for your own good. We sisters could actually manage the company well."
Then Clara, pretending to be all thoughtful, turned to Charles. "Thank you, Mr. Percy, for making this happen. I won't slack off at the Percy Group either." She was clearly trying to mess with Diana's business.
Diana frowned, clearly annoyed. "Who are you calling sister? My mom only had me. When the Spencer Group went bankrupt, I didn't see you offering any money. Now you want a management position? Keep dreaming!"
She had worked so hard to deal with Charles, why should Clara get the benefits? So Diana turned to Charles and said, "Mr. Percy, I don't accept Clara joining the Spencer Group. If you really want someone to supervise me, Nolan is a good choice, and I quite like him."
Charles raised an eyebrow and suddenly looked at Nolan beside him. Nolan was caught off guard by this sudden confession. With Charles's gaze on him, Nolan wished he could disappear.
Nolan stammered, "Ms. Spencer, please don't say that. We've only talked about work, and besides, Mr. Percy, as the largest shareholder of the Spencer Group, has absolute authority over the management team. You have to follow Mr. Percy's arrangements in everything at the Spencer Group."
"So, as the second-largest shareholder, I have no say?" Diana's face was full of displeasure, and she was gripping a corner of the contract.
Charles didn't even blink. "I said Clara, so it's Clara. If you don't like it, you can break the contract now, and you know the consequences."
Diana clenched and unclenched her fists, feeling helpless. She had trusted Charles too much; she should have negotiated with half of the gems back then.
Seeing that Charles had made his decision, Clara immediately beamed. "Thank you, Mr. Percy! Diana, you're gonna be looking out for me from now on, right?"
Diana forced a couple of laughs and was about to leave.
"Wait." It was Charles's low, lazy voice again. This time, Diana had completely lost her temper and looked back at Charles, snapping, "What is it now, Mr. Percy? Can you just spill it all at once?"
Charles flipped through the just-signed contract and added, "In three months, I want to see the Spencer Group generating revenue. If you can't do it, we'll just keep filing for bankruptcy."
"What? Three months? Do you think I'm a miracle worker? Can you revive the Spencer Group in three months?" Diana was furious; Charles was indeed a jerk who would never be kind.
Charles, sitting in his chair, smiled at the furious Diana, but his eyes were cold.
Charles's thin lips moved slightly, and he said indifferently, "If I could do it, why would I need you? The employee handbook states that the employee must absolutely obey the boss's orders. Alright, Nolan, see Ms. Spencer out."
Diana wanted to explode, but Nolan grabbed her arm and dragged her towards the door. Clara followed them out of the CEO's office.
Charles sat alone, picking up the gem around his neck, warming it in his palm with his body heat. The Percy Group's treasure, he had spent so much effort and money searching for it but never found it.
'How did Diana find it in just a few days?' Charles was confused.
If Diana hadn't been so young when he was kidnapped, Charles might've thought she swiped the gem, waiting for the right moment to trade it. But that was clearly impossible. So, Charles had Clara keep an eye on her, just in case something shady was going on.
Nolan practically shoved Diana out the door and into the elevator, trying to make a quick escape.
Clara rushed over and hit the down button, but Diana kept jabbing the close button inside the elevator.
They had a ridiculous hand-speed contest, making the elevator doors open and close repeatedly.
Finally, Nolan stepped in and stopped them before the elevator broke down. He hit the down button and pushed Clara inside.
Clara sneakily pressed the button for the first floor and kept blocking Diana, not letting her move.
Once the elevator started descending, Clara pulled her hand back and distanced herself from Diana. She sneered, "How about that? Thanks for working so hard. You got me the chance to manage the Spencer Group. I'm really sorry. I didn't expect Mr. Percy to favor me so much."
Clara cupped her face with both hands, pretending to be shy.
Diana rolled her eyes and made a gagging motion, showing her disgust. "You got the position, but let's see if you can keep it. You better pray you don't lose it, or I guarantee you'll regret it."
In the cramped elevator, Diana's words sounded especially menacing. Clara's legs even went weak; she tried to hide her panic and stammered, "You're just jealous! Diana, going against me means going against Mr. Percy! Who knows who will end up regretting it then."
As she finished, the elevator arrived, and Clara bolted out like she was escaping.
Diana watched Clara's fleeing figure and found it amusing. 'Charles wants to use Clara to spy on me? That's a total joke!' Thinking of this, Diana hailed a cab to go home and discuss the next steps with Robert.
She not only had to make the Spencer Group profitable but also find evidence of Nathan's past embezzlement. Sitting in the car, Diana finally had time to reply to messages.
Diana: [I have good news and bad news, which one do you want to hear first?]
Robert, at home, was a bit puzzled. 'What's going on now? Did Charles change his mind?'
Robert: [Good news first.]
Diana: [The good news is that the contract was successfully signed, and I am now one of the major shareholders of the Spencer Group.]
Robert: [What's the bad news?]
Diana: [Charles can break the contract anytime because we can't compete with him, and he also put Clara in to supervise me.]
Robert: [That sounds like him, but getting this far is already pretty good. Keep it up!]
Diana breathed a sigh of relief; the current situation had already exceeded her expectations.
Once the company was running, she would find a way to kick Charles out. Besides their shares, there were still 30% of scattered shares. If she could acquire 10%, she could be on par with Charles, and then who would have the final say would be up in the air.
Meanwhile, Clara was on the phone with Mia, looking very pleased with herself. Mia had been anxious when she heard Diana had taken back the Spencer Group. Now, those socialites were all asking how the Spencer Family was doing recently and why Mia had moved out of the mansion.
