Chapter 261 Cold Violence

"She should stay at home." Charles's voice was low, issuing the final command.

Diana was pregnant now, and who knew what could happen if she was out and about.

Whether it was for her safety or Charles's own selfish reasons, keeping her at home was the best protection.

Jacob hesitated, his face uncertain. "But if we keep Ms. Spencer cooped up like this, she'll lose it."

"Then use Evelyn. Jacob, you've been with the Percy family for years. Do I really need to spell this out for you?" Charles's brows furrowed, his tone impatient.

Jacob quickly lowered his head, respectfully replying, "I'm sorry, Mr. Percy. I spoke out of turn."

But even as he said it, he felt this plan was bound to fail. As the butler of the Percy Mansion, he had no choice but to assist Charles.

After arranging everything, Charles returned upstairs. He still slept in Diana's room, but this time there was no embrace. He deliberately made his movements exaggerated.

Diana, thinking there was an earthquake, groggily opened her eyes to see Charles's broad back, lying stiffly beside her.

The bed was large, with one person on the left and the other on the right, leaving enough space in the middle for two more people.

Diana yawned, not reacting much. The distance suited her just fine. She pulled the blanket, casually turning over.

The part of the blanket that had been covering Charles was completely pulled away by her movement.

Charles, tall and wearing thin clothes, was exposed to the air, looking somewhat desolate. He took a deep breath, suppressing his emotions.

He moved inward, finally covering himself with the blanket again.

He wished Diana would have nightmares tonight!

As the winter sunlight streamed into the room, the chirping of birds in the back garden was somewhat annoying.

Diana buried her face in the pillow, her fingers twitching slightly. The bed beside her was already cold; she was alone.

She wondered what time it was and why Jacob hadn't called her down to cook. Sitting up and stretching, she picked up her phone. It was already noon.

Since becoming pregnant, she had become lazier, sleeping in more and more. Her stomach growled, so she quickly freshened up and went downstairs.

Downstairs, Evelyn and the servants were preparing lunch as usual. Seeing her come down, Evelyn smiled and greeted her, "Good morning, Ms. Spencer."

Tessa, nearby, couldn't help but mutter, "It's already noon, not morning. Mr. Percy left for the office ages ago."

Her voice was low, only Bronte beside her heard it. Bronte quickly tugged on her arm, signaling her to stop talking.

Diana didn't notice, just smiled. She looked around, not seeing Jacob. Just as she was about to ask, Jacob walked in from outside. Seeing her awake, he smiled slightly, "Good morning, Ms. Spencer."

Diana nodded, then asked, "No need to deliver food today? Why didn't anyone call me?"

"That's right, Ms. Spencer. From today on, you don't need to deliver food anymore." Jacob responded, but his face showed hesitation, unsure how to continue.

Diana knew it wasn't that simple and took the initiative, "It's okay, just tell me. Does Charles have other demands?"

Letting her off so easily wasn't like him.

Sure enough, Jacob took a deep breath, preparing himself, "Mr. Percy said..."

Before he could finish, footsteps sounded behind him. Charles stood at the dining room door, a suit draped over his arm, his expression cold as he met Diana's gaze.

A servant quickly called out, "Mr. Percy," rushing to take his coat. Jacob also turned, "Mr. Percy, you're back."

He then instructed the servants to speed up setting the table, putting the previous conversation aside.

Diana raised an eyebrow, her gaze filled with suspicion as she looked at Charles.

So, not delivering food meant Charles would be eating at home? The Percy Group was so far from the Percy Mansion; he must have nothing better to do than come home for lunch.

With that thought running through her mind, she rolled her eyes slightly and took a seat at the dining table.

The servants bustled around, but the two of them remained silent. Charles sat across from Diana, and no matter how she moved, she could always see him in her peripheral vision.

She didn't care, treating him like air. The only thing that bothered her was that Evelyn disappeared as soon as Charles returned, probably hiding from him.

Diana frowned slightly but felt powerless to do anything about it, so she chose to stay silent.

Soon, the servants had almost finished setting the table. The Percy family didn't usually go for extravagant meals. Besides the usual dishes, Diana had a special nutritious meal for pregnant women.

As the last bowl of soup was placed in front of her, Diana politely thanked the servant, who smiled back and stepped aside.

Charles's expression was displeased. From the moment he returned, Diana hadn't said a word to him, not even a simple greeting.

When did she become so polite to the servants?

Diana didn't notice his change in expression, focusing on her lunch.

After a while, Charles couldn't hold back, "Don't you have anything to say to me?"

Diana paused, looking up, "What's there to say?"

She wasn't being provocative, just genuinely asking. But Charles didn't see it that way. His lips pressed into a thin line, he didn't answer, just lowered his head and started eating.

Diana noticed his silence and found it a relief, happy to have some peace.

The meal continued in silence, the only sound the clinking of cutlery. The atmosphere was tense; Charles had made a cold entrance and left in a huff.

Jacob watched the car drive away, sighing helplessly. 'Young people, why can't they just talk things out? Charles's stubbornness and Diana's cluelessness are a bad combination.'

As he was thinking this, Diana appeared behind him, asking, "What's wrong, Jacob? You seem upset."

Her question made Jacob's face even more awkward. He realized she wasn't clueless, just pretending not to understand.

But her presence reminded him of the unfinished conversation.

He hadn't mentioned it before lunch to let Diana eat in peace. Now that Charles was gone, he had nothing to hold back.

Clearing his throat, he said, "Ms. Spencer, Mr. Percy said pregnant women need proper exercise. To keep you from getting bored at home, he found some tasks for you."

He softened Charles's words, fearing Diana's resistance. But Diana wasn't buying it. Her face fell, "So I'm stuck in this place and I have to work too?"
