Chapter 16 Debt

Sophia gave a nod. "Yeah, I get it, but why are you still hanging around in this body?"

She wasn't trying to kick her out, but having two souls in one body was like some next-level schizophrenia.

Plus, if Diana came back, Sophia would have to bounce.

But deep down, Sophia wanted to stick around long enough to get her revenge. Even if it meant dying, she wanted to take out those two jerks first.

Diana's face got all sad as she explained, "I'm already dead, but I can't let go. At first, it was because of Charles, so I stuck around. But now, I've moved on. The Spencer Group is about to go under, and that's my mom's and grandparents' legacy. Sophia, please. Help me save the company, okay? Think of it as rent for using my body."

Sophia frowned and said, "I want to help, but you saw what Charles can do."

Diana shook her head, knowing Sophia was more than she seemed.

So Diana kept pleading, "I can see your memories; I know you're capable. You used to be a hacker, right? I know I'll mess things up if I stay in my body, but saving the Spencer Group is my only wish; please."

Sharing memories in one body was weird, Sophia felt like she was being watched.

Diana was right; Sophia was a big deal hacker on the Dark Web back in the day.

The Dark Web had all sorts of skilled people.

They made money by taking jobs.

The gigs ranged from small-time stuff to big deals involving major business and political players.

The top group on the Dark Web was called the "Sword of Damocles." No one knew who was in it.

But the big shots knew the top dog was called "A," the best intel agent. They could dig up the deepest secrets.

A was also a top-notch bodyguard. They once fought off an international thief to protect a collector's prized item.

A had done tons of stuff like that.

But half a year ago, A vanished from the Dark Web. No one knew where they went.

But Diana knew that A was the calm-looking Sophia right in front of her.

The first time Diana saw Sophia's memories, she was blown away.

There really was such a badass woman; Sophia's skills were off the charts.

Diana trusted Sophia, believing she could bring the Spencer Group back with just a little effort.

Sophia bit her lip, looking at Diana's hopeful eyes, and said, "The old me is dead too. I'm living as you now. I'll do my best for the Spencer Group, but no promises."

Diana felt a bit relieved; as long as Sophia tried her best, it was sufficient. She couldn't simply stand by and watch the Spencer Group fall apart.

Diana stepped forward, hugged Sophia, said thanks, and then faded away.

In reality, Sophia woke up slowly, holding her head, wondering if that dream was real. Her gut told her it was. If she could come back as Diana, anything was possible.

"Ms. Spencer, dinner is ready!" Evelyn knocked on the door, trying to wake Diana up.

Diana had slept too long. If she slept any longer, Evelyn worried she'd become one with the bed.

Diana sat up, answered, and stretched.

She figured she'd hit up Robert later about the Spencer Group and see if there was any shot at saving it.

Downstairs, Robert was already at the dining table, waiting for Diana to join him.

Diana asked Evelyn to sit down and eat with them.

Evelyn's cooking was on point, and Diana found the food pretty tasty.

Diana ate quickly but still managed to keep it classy.

After a few bites, she noticed Robert and Evelyn weren't eating much, looking all worried and stuff.

So Diana asked, "What's up? Why do you both look so down? Robert, you're usually all serious, but why's Evelyn so quiet too?"

"It's not like that, Ms. Spencer. I just feel bad." Evelyn, hearing Diana kinda blaming Robert, put down her utensils and defended him.

Diana kept munching and asked, "What's wrong? Do I pay you too little?"

Evelyn immediately waved her hand. Seeing her hesitant look, Diana decided to ask Robert.

But Robert sighed, "Let's eat first. We'll talk after. I'm afraid you might lose your appetite if I tell you now."

"Don't worry, my appetite's solid. Isn't the company going bankrupt? What could be worse than that?" Diana kept eating, but Robert's next words made her hand shake.

Robert stated, "A few hours ago, I told you the Percy Group decided to bankrupt and liquidate the Spencer Group. They just sent over the bill. After the company goes under, the Spencer Group still has to pay the debt."

"How much?"

"$9.99 million."

Diana paused, speechless for a moment. She regretted agreeing to the original Diana so quickly in the dream.

It was just bankruptcy before, but now they owed a ton of money.

To pay off the debt, even if she sold everything Bianca left for Diana, it wouldn't make a dent.

Charles clearly wanted to ruin Diana.

The Percy Group held 55% of the Spencer Group's shares, but they wanted Diana, who only had 15%, to pay the debt.

Nevertheless, if given the opportunity, Diana could secure a lucrative job with a substantial commission, enabling her to swiftly repay the debt.So Diana's expression didn't change much and she kept eating.

Robert and Evelyn were worried sick, afraid Diana would be crushed by the news.

Neither of them could eat a bite, acting like they were the ones in debt, not Diana.

"Ms. Spencer, this is just too rough. You fought hard to reclaim the house, and now you owe so much money." Evelyn felt genuinely sorry for Diana, but she spoke directly.

Diana suddenly got why Nathan's family didn't like her.

She put down her utensils and patted Evelyn's head, saying, "It's okay. You don't have to worry about the debt with me. If I can't cover your salary, I'll make sure to hook you up with a solid job first."

Evelyn felt a pang of sadness, thinking, 'Diana is really too good. Why does God always mess with kind people?'

Robert, being all professional, offered his opinion, "Diana, maybe you should talk to Charles. Let him spare the Spencer Group for the sake of your marriage."

Diana remembered the suffocating feeling of being choked by Charles and shook her head.

Robert clearly didn't get how tense things were between Diana and Charles.

Not mentioning the marriage was fine, but bringing it up in front of Charles was asking for trouble.

"This debt was forced on me by him. Do you think begging him will help?" Diana's tone was sarcastic, and she added, "He might make me suffer more because of our marriage."

Although Robert's suggestion was useless, Diana did need to talk with Charles.
