Chapter 497 Go Home for Dinner

Charles sat at his desk, propping his head up with one hand as he watched her on the phone.

He thought absentmindedly that she really had a knack for dealing with kids.

"Benjamin, how about dinner tonight? I'll come find you," Diana said.

There was a brief pause on the other end, followed by a child's excited squeal.

Benjamin was over the moon. He was bouncing barefoot on the couch, and in his excitement, he accidentally stepped on Eugene, who winced in pain.

Eugene nudged Benjamin back onto the couch, and Benjamin snapped out of it, apologetically reining in his excitement.

"Yeah, yeah! When are you coming? Where are we gonna eat? I want fried chicken and..."

Before he could finish, a cold male voice cut in from the other end.

"We're eating at home. No fried chicken; it's junk food, and you're still growing. Jacob will handle everything."

Benjamin's face went blank as he held the phone.

Why was his mommy calling with Charles?

Oh, right. They were back together, so they must have patched things up.

The flood of information left Benjamin momentarily stunned, but Eugene raised an eyebrow and said, "What'd they say? You're just sitting there like a statue."

The voice on the phone grew louder, "Eugene? You there? Pick up the phone."

Hearing his name, Eugene smirked and took the phone, lazily saying, "Do I have a role today, Mr. Percy? Just let me know."

"You can leave now. We're having a family dinner, and you're in the way."

Eugene was used to such bluntness and replied, "Sure, I'll get out of your hair and give you guys some space."

He handed the phone back to Benjamin, stood up, straightened his clothes, and waved goodbye, "Kid, I'm out. Have a great day. Bye."

Benjamin waved back, still a bit dazed, and then quietly spoke into the phone, "Mr. Percy, are you bringing Ms. Wipere back with you?"

Charles didn't correct him, just replied calmly, "Yeah, listen to Jacob at home and behave. I promised you'd get to see each other, and I keep my promises."

It wasn't just because Benjamin's birthday was coming up; they needed to reconnect.

Diana watched Charles with a serious expression, worried he might scare Benjamin again.

She quickly took the phone and gently reassured, "Benjamin, we'll be home soon. You can eat whatever you want. Just let Jacob know."

Charles frowned slightly at her indulgence, but a sharp look from her kept him quiet. He watched them chat away, finding it surprisingly pleasant.

After about ten minutes, Benjamin reluctantly hung up, and Diana breathed a sigh of relief, only to be pulled into Charles's arms the next moment.

Charles had somehow snuck up on her, resting his chin on her shoulder, whispering, "You really like kids."

It was a statement, not a question. He was sure of it, so he continued without waiting for her response.

"When we have kids, Benjamin will be the big brother. You'll have to be even better to our kids. But for now, you need to be the best to me."

As he spoke, his hand wandered to her stomach.

She listened to his nonsense in silence, then turned to face him, scolding, "Are you serious? Jealous of a kid? Isn't that embarrassing?"

Charles wasn't fazed by her scolding; instead, he grinned and leaned in for a kiss, "Not at all."

With his arm around her waist, she couldn't move, so she blocked him with her hand.

Just then, the office door swung open.

"Mr. Percy..."

Nolan stood at the door, caught off guard by the intimate scene before him.

Maintaining his professional demeanor, he kept a straight face, though he wished he could unsee it.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Diana and Nolan were caught in the awkwardness, while Charles was focused on stealing a kiss.

Taking advantage of Diana's distraction, he quickly kissed her and then released her, changing his expression, "What's up?"

"The car's ready downstairs. We can leave whenever you're ready."

Nolan snapped back to reality and quickly got to the point, though the awkwardness lingered, so he added, "I did knock."

He had knocked, and Charles hadn't stopped him from entering. Diana simply hadn't heard.

"Got it. You can go now."

Charles replied calmly, not intending to say more.

Once the office door closed, he glanced at the still-embarrassed Diana, "What's there to be shy about? We're married; it's normal to be affectionate."

Diana covered her face, glaring at him, "Not everyone is like you. Why let others see that? If I were Nolan, I'd want to gouge my eyes out."

"I always thought you were the open-minded type."

Charles said softly, not daring to mention that Nolan had brought her clothes earlier.

"What does being open-minded have to do with it? Do all couples have to kiss in front of a third party? Can't you consider how single people feel? You have no sense of decency!"

Diana lectured him righteously, then grabbed her bag and turned to leave.

At the door, she urged, "What are you waiting for? Let's go."

Charles stood there, noticing her ears turning red, knowing she was just putting on a brave front.

He wanted to laugh but held back, clearing his throat, "Just a moment, let me finish up."

Diana turned around with a look that said, 'Men are such trouble.'

But she obediently sat back on the couch, watching him wrap up his work.

At the Percy Mansion, it was dusk, and the sun hung low on the horizon, painting the clouds a warm orange.

Benjamin and Snowy sat on the porch, eagerly watching the driveway.

Snowy didn't know why its little master was waiting there, but it stayed loyally by his side until Jacob approached from behind, causing Snowy to perk up and wag its tail.

"Benjamin, still waiting?"

Jacob's voice was gentle, "The office is a bit of a drive from here. It'll be a while before they get back. Let's wait inside. The kitchen's made some delicious fried chicken. You can have some now."

Benjamin sniffed, already catching the scent of fried chicken on Jacob.

He was tempted, but he wanted to greet Diana first, so he shook his head, "No, I'll wait for them. They should be back soon."

As if the universe heard him, the familiar sound of a car engine reached his ears, and a Maybach slowly pulled into the driveway.
