Chapter 345 Mother and Son Conversation
Celestria.
The assistant held a cup of coffee, nervously glancing at Diana, who was typing away at the console.
Before she could step forward, Diana noticed her, her voice tinged with fatigue. "Just put it next to me, thanks."
The assistant obediently placed the coffee beside her and then asked, "How's it going? Is it too tricky? If it's too difficult, I can request more help."
Diana smirked, pausing her work to look at the assistant.
"If I find it tricky, then probably no one can solve it."
She took a sip of the coffee, the rich aroma mixed with bitterness, giving her a slight boost of energy.
Seeing the assistant still looking worried, she continued, "Go tell your boss to prepare the final payment and transfer the money to my account."
With that, she turned back to the keyboard, lines of code scrolling across the screen. A loading bar appeared.
Diana lifted her chin, urging, "Go on, hurry."
Realizing the task was complete, the assistant's face lit up with a smile.
"Okay!"
After she left, Diana rubbed her sore neck and back.
She had been on a business trip for over a week and wondered if Dean and Benjamin had caused any trouble.
Thinking of this, Diana pulled out her phone and called Dean. It rang for a full 30 seconds before he picked up.
"Sophia, what's up? Are you done?"
Dean's voice sounded normal, but Diana sensed something was off.
"Yeah, things are wrapped up here. I'm booking a flight back for tomorrow. Where's Benjamin? Let me talk to him."
Dean's expression instantly tensed at the mention of Benjamin.
"Benjamin went out. I'll have him call you back later?"
"Alright, but you guys better behave at home. Stop spoiling him so much. Benjamin's getting out of hand because of you all."
Given Diana's high status in Sword of Damocles, second only to the founder, everyone doted on Benjamin as well.
He had been learning code from a group of hackers since he was young and had become quite arrogant. Diana was the only one strict with him to keep his ego in check.
But Benjamin still adored her, often sticking close to her in Sword of Damocles.
"Got it, Sophia. Safe travels home tomorrow."
"Thanks."
After hanging up, Dean anxiously called Benjamin.
It was early morning in the Rainbow Federation, the sun just rising. Benjamin was still snuggled up with Silver, sleeping in.
His watch vibrated multiple times before he slowly opened his eyes, mumbling, "Who is it?"
He lazily pressed the answer button, and Dean's voice roared through the speaker, "Benjamin! Get back home now!"
Benjamin turned over, burying his face in the pillow to muffle the noise.
"Dean, we agreed I'd come back later. What's the rush?"
He closed his eyes again, hoping to catch a few more minutes of sleep.
Dean's urgent voice followed, "Benjamin, your mom's coming back. If you're not home when she arrives, how am I supposed to explain? Should I find a kid who looks like you to take your place?"
"No way! I'm her kid!"
Benjamin shot up, realizing what Dean had said.
"Mommy's coming back? When? Wasn't she supposed to be gone for two weeks?"
"Her trips are never fixed. You took a gamble, and she's coming back tomorrow. If it's a morning flight, she'll be home the day after."
Dean's tone turned serious. "You better get on a plane today and come back immediately. Otherwise, I won't cover for you."
Diana had a serious incident in the Rainbow Federation before, and Benjamin still dared to go there. He was asking for trouble.
Benjamin's face showed his inner conflict. Though he wanted to continue his adventures with Charles, Diana's return was more important.
After weighing his options, Benjamin said, "Fine, I'll come back today, but..."
He glanced at the dog beside him, feeling torn.
Dean, impatient, urged, "Spit it out!"
"Dean, can you check on international pet transport for me? I want to bring a dog."
"What?" Dean's voice rose, thinking he misheard. "Why do you need to bring a dog? We have plenty here. Just leave it. The priority is getting you back. Once you're home, I'll get you a better, more impressive one."
Hearing the refusal, Benjamin pouted, throwing a childish tantrum. "I don't care! I want this one! I promised it a good life, Dean. How can you be so heartless?"
Dean closed his eyes, feeling a headache coming on.
Diana had been a handful in Sword of Damocles, and now Benjamin was just the same.
To coax him back, Dean relented, "Fine, I'll arrange it. Just get back here immediately."
"Got it, got it. I'm coming back." Benjamin yawned as he replied.
He hadn't even had time to enjoy his trip before being forced to return. What a bummer.
But it wasn't a total loss; at least he got the money and the dog.
"Silver!" Benjamin hugged the dog's head, giving it a big kiss. "We're going home! Are you excited? You'll have a real home now!"
Silver barked happily in response.
Benjamin petted its fur, suddenly remembering he hadn't told Diana about the dog. His expression turned serious as he pushed Silver into the bathroom.
Then, he reopened his watch to video call Diana.
When the video connected, Diana saw Benjamin's face filling the screen, cheeks flushed as if he had just exercised.
"Mommy, I miss you."
Diana's eyes softened, charmed by his words. "Dean said you went out. What were you up to? Have you been behaving at home?"
"I just wandered around and came back to my room. Of course, I've been good! I'm the best kid in Sword of Damocles."
Benjamin lied without blinking, easily fooling Diana.
After chatting for a while, he cautiously asked, "Mommy, do you like dogs?"
Diana's mind flashed back to five years ago, remembering Snowy. She had left in such a hurry and wondered how it was doing now.
"Yes, I do. Dogs are man's best friend. Do you want a dog?"
It was clear Diana knew her son well; she saw right through Benjamin's intentions immediately.
Seeing she wasn't against dogs, Benjamin eagerly nodded. "Yeah, I really want one. A white one would be perfect!"
"If I get you a dog, will you promise to behave?"
"I will! I'll be super good! Once I have a dog, I won't run around anymore." Benjamin responded immediately, his sincerity evident.
Diana stifled a laugh, seeing his hopeful eyes. "Alright, I'll have Dean arrange it."
Benjamin was so happy he rolled around on the bed, kissing the screen multiple times. "Thank you, Mommy! You're the best!"
He had been worried Diana wouldn't allow it, but now he could relax.
After they hung up, Benjamin let Silver out, putting on the collar and leash he bought yesterday.
Now, he just needed to take Silver to the pet store Dean mentioned and head to the airport.
"Rainbow Federation, I'll miss you," Benjamin said, looking out at the tall buildings one last time.
Then, he tugged on the leash, putting on a smile. "Let's go, Silver. We're going home!"
