Chapter 192 She wasn't coming back
Claire had been standing behind Charles for what felt like forever, just like Nolan. Her legs were starting to shake from the strain.
Mike noticed and told Gilbert to grab some chairs for her and Nolan, giving their legs a break.
The deal with Dawn Innovations Group went off without a hitch, but as soon as Charles got into the hotel car, he took off his diamond watch and handed it to Nolan.
Nolan's eyes nearly popped out of his head. 'What the heck? Charles just said he liked this watch, and now he's giving it to me?'
He asked, "Mr. Percy, what's this about?"
Charles looked up but didn't say a word, just mouthed, "Check."
A chill ran down Nolan's spine. Charles thought the watch might be tampered with.
This wasn't the first time a business partner had tried something shady. They'd dealt with drugged gifts and bugged devices before.
Nolan carefully pocketed the watch. "Got it, Mr. Percy."
At the Percy Mansion, Diana had crashed right after dinner, exhausted from her time in prison.
The next morning, just as the sun was peeking over the horizon, her tablet buzzed on the bedside table. A new email lit up the screen.
Diana groggily rubbed her eyes. Who was emailing her this early?
She grabbed the tablet and opened the email. It was from Dean, with bank account details and recent itineraries for Grant and Hestia. Their last stop was Evergreen City.
Diana's face darkened. She'd been swamped with stuff here and had Dean keeping tabs on those two jerks. Were they finally making a move?
She closed the email and jumped onto the Dark Web to call Dean.
"Dean, did Grant and Hestia go to Evergreen City?"
Dean replied, "Yeah, they've been cozying up to the old members of Sword of Damocles. They went to Evergreen City a few days ago."
Diana frowned. "Check if they sent money to the Sword of Damocles people."
Dean scratched his head and typed away. Moments later, he found the list of recipients. There were quite a few names, but it was pretty clear they were all fronts for the Sword of Damocles crew.
But why would these guys need money? With their skills, they wouldn't need bribes from Grant and Hestia.
"It is them, but Diana, they don't need money."
Dean kept digging. Before Diana could respond, Dean shouted, "Holy crap!"
He stared at the screen in disbelief and counted again, "Eight hundred million dollars! Did those two rob a bank? How can they afford to give those old guys eight hundred million dollars?"
He sent the info to Diana and realized, "Since you left, there's been an empty seat on the Sword of Damocles council. Could they be trying to buy their way in?"
But Dean quickly dismissed the idea. Sword of Damocles always valued skill. Even if the council members voted for Grant, their abilities wouldn't cut it.
Diana frowned. She was more worried about how Grant and Hestia had gotten such a huge amount of money.
As hackers, the best money came from selling secrets. But what kind of secrets could net eight hundred million dollars so fast?
"Dean! Can you find out exactly where they are in Evergreen City? I need to find them," Diana said urgently.
She suddenly realized that the quick cash might be coming from selling national secrets.
Evergreen City, being the capital of the Rainbow Federation, was crawling with important politicians and military bigwigs.
Someone might be selling out the country, and those jerks were playing spy.
Dean was already on it, searching like a pro.
"Diana, what's going on? Are you gonna meet them? Do you need me to come with you? I'm worried about you going solo."
"No need, they won't see me coming," Diana said coldly. "I have to go. They're selling national secrets."
Dean's hands froze, and his voice got louder, "What! How could they do that?"
As hackers, they always walked a fine line, and selling secrets wasn't just about one country—it could mess up the whole world's peace.
Diana sneered. It wasn't shocking they'd stoop this low. When she got kicked out of Sword of Damocles, she knew the group would eventually implode.
Now it looked like the countdown had started.
"Sophia, I'll dig up everything. I'll have the documents ready by noon. If you go to meet them, be careful."
Dean stared intently at his screen. Being in a foreign country, he couldn't handle everything himself.
With Grant and Hestia pulling this stunt, he still had to keep tabs on Sword of Damocles.
"Okay." Diana bit her lip, debating whether to tell him she'd switched bodies.
But she quickly hung up. Things were already messy enough; she'd tell Dean later.
Diana couldn't sleep after that and started messaging Dean.
A: [I think they might not be aiming for the council. They could be buying influence, so even if someone more capable takes the spot, they'd just be a puppet.]
A: [Dean, stay calm and don't do anything crazy. I'll get you the proof of their leaks. With me here, I won't let Sword of Damocles fall apart.]
Diana sent these messages, but Dean remained silent, probably busy tracking their whereabouts.
Two hours later, he sent an email with Grant and Hestia's exact location, but the person they were meeting was marked with a big question mark.
He couldn't figure it out.
The more mysterious it was, the more intrigued Diana became. This mystery person had to be the spy selling info from the Rainbow Federation.
Because of the mission's nature, Grant and Hestia had been in Evergreen City for three days. Their meeting spot was just a nondescript village. Diana closed the email and decided to head out.
She didn't know when their next meeting would be, but it was worth a shot.
Downstairs, Evelyn and Jacob were making breakfast.
Seeing Diana come down, Evelyn waved excitedly. "Ms. Spencer, good morning. I made your favorite croissants. Come and eat."
Diana smiled, catching her enthusiasm.
At the table, there were five or six cute little croissants piled up. Besides the bread, there was oatmeal, sandwiches, and juice instead of milk.
Diana picked up the juice. She sniffed it and, finding nothing off, took a sip.
It was smooth and sweet, not too much. She squinted in satisfaction and took another big gulp.
Evelyn, seeing no bad reaction, sighed in relief. The last time with the milk had really freaked her out.
