Chapter 314 Let Me Go
At the Percy Manor, Elise was lounging on the couch, phone in hand.
The voice on the other end was excited, "We did it, Mrs. Percy. No one's gonna challenge Zachary for the position anymore."
Elise raised an eyebrow, a smile playing on her lips. "Really? What about Diana? Is she dead?"
"No, but the kid's gone. Charles won't keep Diana around."
Hearing this, Elise's red lips curled up. "I see. Get out of Evergreen City for a while. I'll send you some money."
"Thanks, Mrs. Percy!" The person on the other end quickly agreed and hung up.
Having finally accomplished her goal, Elise was in high spirits, humming a tune from the southern part of the Rainbow Federation.
The butler, Ralph, noticed and smiled, congratulating her, "Congratulations, Mrs. Percy. Should we keep an eye on Diana to make sure she's completely out of the picture?"
"Keep an eye on her?" Elise frowned, a hint of disdain in her eyes.
"Are you an idiot? Just because Charles isn't looking into this now doesn't mean he's stupid. Do you know why I told him to leave Evergreen City?"
Realizing his mistake, Ralph quickly lowered his head and apologized, "I spoke out of turn."
In the VIP room of the hospital.
Diana woke up, still a bit dazed. As she moved her hand, someone grabbed it.
"Who is it?" Her voice was hoarse from not having had water in a while.
After a long pause, the person answered, "It's me."
Diana understood and tried to pull her hand back, but he held on tightly.
After a moment, she spoke softly, "Did I get into a car accident? What about the baby? How is the baby?"
A series of questions choked Charles. He wanted to say something but couldn't. He just breathed heavily, and Diana felt something wet fall on her hand.
Charles seemed to be crying.
Diana was confused. She was the one who lost the baby, the desperate mother.
She hadn't even started acting yet, and Charles was already more emotional than she was.
But she couldn't deny that his reaction gave her inspiration.
She touched Charles' face, confirming the tears, and her emotions surged. "Say something! Where is my baby?"
"The baby... we can have another one." His voice was dry, suppressing his emotions. Even this short sentence was strained.
Diana fell silent, her voice trembling. "What do you mean, we can have another one? What do you think this baby was? I remember seeing your car. You were at the scene, right?"
As she spoke, her emotions calmed. She continued, "How did you know I was there?"
Diana fell silent again. She knew Charles had been monitoring her; otherwise, he couldn't have appeared at the accident scene so quickly.
She frantically searched her memory and finally remembered the ankle bracelet.
When she left, she took nothing with her except for the ankle bracelet, which she couldn't remove.
This meant that Charles had known the moment she escaped from The Percy Mansion.
He didn't bring her back immediately but watched her wander the streets.
Thinking about it, Diana found it amusing. If anything had gone wrong, the accident wouldn't have happened.
She should even thank Charles for not taking her away immediately, allowing her to finish her act.
But the more she thought about it, the colder she felt. She pulled her hand back, her tone flat. "Please leave. I want to be alone."
Charles was stunned. He thought she would cry and scream after losing the baby, but her calm acceptance scared him more.
Suppressing his emotions and feeling a faint sense of dread, he moved his lips and said, "If you're upset, you can cry. Whatever you want to do, I'll be with you."
"Or if you want something, I'll buy it for you. Don't be like this."
By the end, his voice was almost pleading.
In the dark, they couldn't see each other's faces, but they could feel the emotions surging like waves.
Diana turned her head slightly, her voice hoarse. "Anything?"
"Anything." His voice was low, afraid of scaring her.
As long as she made a request, he would fulfill it. He had money and power; he could do anything.
After a moment, Diana spoke, "Alright, then let me leave, Mr. Percy. The baby is gone. Our agreement is over. I have no value to you anymore."
Charles' breath hitched, his heart aching. His voice trembled, "Choose another condition. The baby is gone, but if you want another, we can have one."
Before he finished, Diana laughed coldly. "It seems my only value to you is as a baby machine."
Her tone turned calm. "No, let me go. I'll leave Evergreen City as you wish and never appear before you again."
"As for the baby, you can have one with anyone you want. There are plenty of women willing to have your child."
But Charles interrupted her, "Get some rest. I have work to handle at the company. We'll talk when you're discharged. Rest well."
With that, Charles hurriedly left, his steps unsteady.
He couldn't stay any longer; he feared that the words he had once spoken and the things he had done would all turn into sharp swords, piercing his heart.
As the door closed, the room fell silent.
Diana, using the light from the machines, sat up. She checked the time—4 AM.
'Have work to handle at the company?' she scoffed.
Not long after he left, a nurse came in.
The middle-aged woman, seeing Diana had just had a miscarriage, was very sympathetic.
Turning on the light, she saw Diana sitting up and quickly helped her lie down. "You can't sit like this; it will hurt. Why are you awake? Are you thirsty? Hungry?"
The nurse covered her with a blanket. Diana blinked and replied, "Hungry and thirsty."
She hadn't eaten all day yesterday. Now, reminded, she felt both hungry and thirsty.
The nurse, seeing her pale face, thought of her own daughter and quickly brought water to her lips. "Don't rush, drink slowly. Your family sent food; I'll heat it up for you."
Diana sipped through the straw, feeling the burning in her throat ease.
As the nurse set up the food, she chatted, "Was that your husband? He's very handsome. Don't be too sad. It's a blessing you weren't hurt. You can have another baby."
Diana paused, knowing the nurse meant well but finding the words grating.
If she had really lost her baby, hearing this would have made her furious.
"I don't like talking to people. Please be quiet."
The nurse, seeing her cold expression, quickly apologized.
Inwardly, she couldn't help but complain, 'This is all because Mr. Percy told me to say it. Earning money is really hard! I can't afford to offend anyone.'
