Chapter 41 Catching the Cheater
After getting home from work, Diana felt a wave of relief. She had been worried Clara would be a problem, but Clara ended up handling everything on her own without Diana needing to step in.
Now, it was just a waiting game for the next three months. Diana took a deep breath and texted Robert the good news. He got back to her about half an hour later.
Robert: [Evelyn said she made a big meal and is waiting for you to come back and celebrate together.]
Diana felt a warm glow as she read the message. Just as she was about to reply, the driver slammed on the brakes. She wasn't wearing her seatbelt in the back seat and got thrown forward.
Before she could ask what was going on, the driver stuck his head out the window and yelled, "What the hell are you doing stopping like that? Trying to get yourself killed? If you want to die, don't drag me into it!"
After his outburst, the driver turned to Diana and said, "Sorry about that. Some crazy woman with a kid just ran into the road to stop the car. Scared the crap out of me."
Diana, holding her head, saw a woman, Isolde Porter, anxiously approaching the driver's window. "Sir, I'm sorry, please give me a ride. I don't have my phone and can't get a cab. I'll pay you back later."
The driver waved her off and started rolling up the window. "Get lost. I'm busy. Find someone else."
Seeing Isolde with a child, Diana figured the kid might be sick and they needed to get to the hospital. So she spoke up, "Sir, let her in. I'll cover the fare."
Isolde's face lit up when she heard Diana from the back seat. Seeing someone willing to pay, the driver stopped being rude and let Isolde in.
Once Isolde sat next to her, Diana noticed she was well-dressed. The child in her arms wasn't crying or fussing, just sucking on their hand with big curious eyes staring at Diana.
Isolde kept thanking Diana. "Thank you, really, thank you so much. Can I have your contact info? I'll pay you back later."
Diana shook her head. It was just a small favor. "No need. Where are you rushing to? Is the kid sick?"
Isolde shook her head and answered honestly, "I'm going to catch a cheater."
After she said that, the car went silent, even the previously irritable driver calmed down. He asked, "Where are you going?"
"Mirage Nights Club," Isolde replied.
Hearing the destination and the reason, Diana raised an eyebrow, sensing there was more to Isolde. So she asked, "A place like Mirage Nights Club isn't great for a kid. If you confront him, having the kid would make things tough."
Isolde didn't expect such straightforward words from someone who looked so gentle and delicate. She replied awkwardly, "I was in such a hurry today. I just wanted to find evidence of his cheating so I can divorce him."
"Divorce is good. I just got divorced recently," Diana replied.
Both Isolde and the driver widened their eyes. "You look like you're in your early twenties. How have you already been divorced?" Isolde asked.
Diana sighed, "I was young and naive. Got married early, then realized he wasn't a good person, so I divorced him."
Hearing this, Isolde felt a connection and her tone became more familiar. "Yeah, if I had known married life would be like this, I wouldn't have listened to that jerk."
Diana nodded. "Men are never satisfied. Once they have something, they don't cherish it. I'm Diana Spencer, by the way. I feel like we have a connection. How about we team up and catch this cheater together?"
The driver, overhearing their conversation, almost lost control of the steering wheel. 'Catching a cheater is such a private matter. Can you really just ask a stranger on the street to join you?' But he underestimated Isolde's resolve.
Isolde thought for a moment and then nodded. "I'm Isolde Porter. Later, you help me watch the kid, and I'll go in and confront them."
Diana thought about Isolde's name. She remembered that Evergreen City had a new internet company. Their boss's last name was Porter, but Diana wasn't sure if Isolde was related to the Porter Group.
Feeling a connection with Diana and sharing similar failed marriages, Isolde felt a sense of camaraderie. Throughout the ride, Isolde kept talking about her marriage. The more Diana listened, the more it sounded like a replica of her own experience.
Isolde got married at 18 to a classmate a few years older. Her husband came from a poor family and couldn't give her what she wanted; he married Isolde primarily for her family's background, but Isolde didn't know it at the time.
After marriage, Isolde gradually returned home, and her husband took over her position in the company. Unexpectedly, while Isolde was pregnant, her husband secretly dated his secretary. It wasn't until after Isolde gave birth that she accidentally found condoms in her husband's pocket and realized he might be cheating.
Isolde wasn't stupid. Her husband hadn't touched her in almost a year since the baby was born, so he must have a mistress. So Isolde hired a private detective to investigate him. Today, she finally got the news that her husband was at Mirage Nights Club with another woman.
However, her husband seemed to sense someone was watching him, so he had his parents keep an eye on Isolde, not letting her leave the house. Feeling isolated and helpless, Isolde was determined. She pretended to go for a walk today, left her phone behind, and ran out with her child to stop a car.
After telling her story, Isolde's eyes were red. Even the driver felt some sympathy and sped up a bit. Diana patted Isolde's shoulder gently. "You did the right thing. You're very brave. Your child will be proud of you."
Isolde felt a bit better. She was determined to catch her husband cheating to ensure he got nothing in the divorce. Isolde's family was wealthy, so they had a prenuptial agreement. That was why her husband only dared to play around secretly. If he got caught, he'd be poor again.
Thanks to the driver's speeding, it only took five minutes to get to the club.
As they got out, the driver made a fist and gave the two women an encouraging gesture. "No need to pay. Good luck catching the cheater!"
With that, the driver sped off, leaving the two women amused by his encouragement. Although it was Diana's second time at Mirage Nights Club, she still didn't know the way. So she and Isolde asked a waitress for directions.
The waitress, a young woman, immediately recognized Diana. "You're the lady from the other day. Don't drink too much today." Actually, Diana was more famous for hitting someone in a private room. But the emotionally intelligent waitress wouldn't mention that. Seeing the two women with a child, she offered, "Mirage Nights Club provides childcare services. Would you like me to take you there?"
The two women nodded. No wonder it was the most famous entertainment venue; it even had such considerate services.
