Chapter 477 Imitation
Today, not only did he let her go out to meet friends, but he also patiently explained the inner workings of the company to her.
Diana started to wonder if the man in front of her was really Charles.
Charles, with his usual calm expression, grabbed her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. His eyes stayed on the screen as he said,
"You should've known all this already. It's what Grandma wanted, too."
Grandma...
Diana's heart skipped a beat, and for a moment, she forgot to pull her hand back.
Come to think of it, Juniper had always been very fond of Diana. She had given Diana the freedom to come and go from the company and had hoped she could help Charles with his work.
Unfortunately, the old Diana had been solely focused on romance at the time and hadn't taken advantage of this. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been so difficult for Diana to return to the Spencer Group back then.
Thinking of this, she pressed her lips together,
"You never wanted me involved in these things. Even if you told me, it wouldn't matter. I don't need to know this stuff at home."
Charles paused his mouse movements and then said,
"I never wanted you involved. It's just that you were always thinking about leaving me. But now we have an agreement, and as my wife, you should understand these things."
After he finished speaking, he turned his head and happened to meet Diana's gaze.
His expression was calm, and his tone was relaxed. It had a calming effect on Diana as well.
Seeing that he had said this, she no longer refused and turned her head back to the screen,
"Alright, I'll listen to you."
After all, this was company confidential information. Knowing more wouldn't hurt.
They talked for a long time until Diana's stomach growled, signaling the end of their private meeting.
Since it was getting late, Charles decided to call it a day and took Diana out for dinner.
The restaurant wasn't far from the company, a very classy place.
Under the warm yellow lights, accompanied by soothing music, the two sat across from each other.
The waiter stood by with a notepad, asking what they would like to eat.
Diana glanced at Charles, only to find him looking at her, showing no intention of ordering.
Sure enough, when he saw her looking over, Charles raised an eyebrow and said with a slight smile,
"Order whatever you like."
This strange gentlemanly behavior made Diana shrink back a bit. She didn't look closely at the menu and instead told the waiter,
"The house specials for two, please."
As the waiter politely retreated, Diana looked around.
Most of the diners were like them, a man and a woman, all with happy smiles on their faces.
It seemed to be a couple's restaurant.
Although it wasn't her first time dining out with Charles, Diana felt very awkward. She bit her lip unconsciously, nervously fidgeting with a napkin.
Noticing her mood, Charles's deep voice came over,
"You're acting strange today. What's wrong?"
Diana paused, placing the crumpled napkin aside,
"Nothing, I'm fine. Just hungry."
"Ever since you saw the lawyer, you've been off. What did you talk about?"
Charles hadn't asked the bodyguards about today's events. He preferred to hear it from Diana herself.
Hearing this, Diana's eyes flickered, and she lowered her gaze,
"Nothing much. Just catching up. I wanted to go back and pay my respects to my mom."
"Alright, tomorrow then?"
Charles agreed quickly.
Diana was even more puzzled. She pressed her lips together and asked,
"You agreed just like that?"
"Why not? It's only right for you to pay respects to your mom. Do you want to see your dad? But he's still in prison."
He took a sip of water, his expression indifferent.
"Who wants to see him? He can rot in there for all I care."
Diana cursed Nathan angrily, distracted by Charles's interruption.
She then took a deep breath, as if making a decision,
"I think you're the one acting strange."
"How so?"
His eyelashes lowered slightly, surprised by her reaction.
Diana propped her chin with one hand, recalling the day's events, and said seriously,
"You're not yourself today. You're not usually this polite, this gentlemanly, this understanding."
Compared to the obsessive man who had confined her just days ago, the current Charles seemed like a different person.
It was this odd feeling that had made her uneasy all day.
Charles seemed to be imitating...
He was like a wild beast that had suddenly stood up to walk on two legs, trying to blend into human society by mimicking human emotions.
If Charles's psychologist were here, they might marvel at Diana's sharpness.
But her string of words made Charles's expression darken, his lips twitching,
"You don't like it?"
His voice was soft, as if asking her or talking to himself.
"You didn't argue with me today, and you didn't resist. You should like this."
It wasn't about liking or disliking. Diana just felt it was strange to be with this disguised Charles.
She frowned slightly and shook her head,
"Never mind. Do whatever you want. Can I go out with you again tomorrow?"
"Of course."
As long as she was by his side, Charles felt much more at ease.
He was more than happy to have her voluntarily offer to accompany him.
Soon, the waiter brought their food, and the two quietly enjoyed their dinner.
Meanwhile, Benjamin was being dropped off at the Percy Mansion by Eugene.
As usual, only Jacob was at the villa. When they got out of the car, he greeted them with a big smile,
"Thank you, Mr. Bailey, for taking care of Benjamin. How was it? Did you have fun today?"
The latter part was directed at Benjamin.
Benjamin nodded,
"It was alright. Better than here."
Despite some twists and turns, overall, it had been a good day.
Eugene heard his response and gave a wry smile,
"You didn't have to worry about anything, of course, you had fun. Jacob, could you get some books on safety education? I think Benjamin needs to brush up on that."
Jacob understood the subtle tension between the two and nodded in agreement.
Eugene glanced at the villa and the dog, Snowy, wagging its tail nearby, and asked,
"Where's Charles? Still not back?"
"Mr. Percy hasn't been staying here lately. Do you need to see him, Mr. Bailey?"
Jacob answered honestly. Except for the days when Benjamin was sick, Charles had been absent.
Jacob never concerned himself with these matters; he was only responsible for taking care of Benjamin.
Hearing the expected answer, Eugene clicked his tongue in disdain,
"That guy forgets his friends when he's in love, leaving the kid with me while he enjoys himself."
Jacob quickly pushed Benjamin inside, afraid Eugene might say something inappropriate.
But Benjamin's ears were sharp. He quickly dodged Jacob and asked with wide eyes,
"Do you know where they went? Where did Mr. Percy take Ms. Wipere?"
If he knew where they were, he could contact Dean to rescue his mom, no longer having to be so passive.
Eugene, hearing him still call her Ms. Wipere, suddenly grinned mischievously,
"Of course, they're off doing good deeds. Who knows, you might have a little brother or sister soon."
