Chapter 392 Cooperation and Entanglement
"What's up?"
Charles answered the phone, his voice flat and uninterested.
To his surprise, it wasn't Nolan on the other end.
"Hey, Charles. Bet you didn't see this coming, huh?"
Charles frowned, his patience wearing thin.
"Eugene, are you bored? Need me to find you something to do?"
"Mr. Bailey, give me the phone! Mr. Percy is getting mad!"
Nolan's voice finally came through, though it sounded distant and muffled.
"Don't worry, I got this."
Eugene shoved Nolan aside and continued with a smirk, "Charles, here's the deal. You want to call off the engagement with Stella, right? But her family's not too thrilled about it."
"And you need to tell me this?"
Just as Charles was about to lose his cool, Nolan managed to grab the phone.
"Mr. Percy, the White family wants to invite you to dinner. They said that even if the marriage doesn't happen, the two families will still have business dealings. So..."
Before he could finish, Eugene butted in, "I think the business deal is just a cover. They really want to keep you around. Charles, if you go, can you take me with you?"
He was clearly looking forward to the drama.
"Get lost." Charles' voice was icy.
Nolan looked at Eugene almost pleadingly, hoping he'd shut up.
But Eugene ignored him and kept going, "I think going isn't a bad idea. At least it'll make them give up. Once the news of the broken engagement is out, who knows how many people will be eyeing the position of Mrs. Percy."
Before Charles could respond, Eugene kept talking, "After all, you have someone at home. Taking her out to see the world wouldn't be a bad idea."
Nolan's face turned pale, wishing he could disappear.
Ignoring Eugene's status, he quickly pushed him away and turned back to the phone, speaking carefully, "Mr. Percy, I'll decline their invitation for you. I'm really sorry."
"Accept it. Send me the time and place."
Charles' deep voice came through the phone.
Nolan's expression froze, thinking he had misheard, and he couldn't help but ask, "What?"
"Nolan, are you deaf? Charles said yes."
Eugene circled around and snatched the phone from Nolan's hand, his tone light, "Alright, Charles. We'll go together then."
The response he got was the electronic beep of the call being disconnected.
Eugene raised an eyebrow, seemingly unfazed.
He put the phone back in Nolan's pocket and patted his shoulder, "Alright, Nolan, don't just stand there."
Nolan snapped back to reality, looking incredulous, "Mr. Bailey, what does this mean? Is Mr. Percy really going to take that woman with him?"
Eugene gave him a sidelong glance, pulled out a cigarette, and placed it in his mouth without lighting it, "Of course. Don't you think there's something off about that woman?"
Nolan recalled her face and murmured, "She looks a lot like the late Ms. Spencer."
The sound of a lighter flicking open reached his ears.
Eugene took a deep drag, the cigarette's tip glowing brightly, and then exhaled a cloud of smoke, "It's hard to believe, but I suspect she might actually be Diana."
The first time he saw her, he just thought they looked alike. After all, in a big world, it's not unusual to find two similar faces.
But considering Charles' quick decision to break off the engagement, it was clearly not normal.
Eugene had swung by the Percy Group to find Charles, only to discover that the workaholic had left early. Very unusual.
"How is that even possible?"
Nolan looked shocked, like he was in a dream.
"Mr. Bailey, we saw Ms. Spencer's body being buried. How could she come back to life?"
Eugene chuckled, "How would I know? But think about it. Charles, facing a woman who looks exactly like Diana, wouldn't he have some doubts? He even broke off his engagement for her and brought her home. If I remember right, Stella has never been to The Percy Mansion, right?"
Nolan's mind raced as he listened to Eugene.
The more he thought about it, the more sense Eugene's words made. Could Diana really have come back to life?
Seeing Nolan's conflicted expression, Eugene didn't say more.
He stubbed out his half-smoked cigarette and tossed it into the trash, clapping his hands, "Alright, I'm out. Send me the time and place too."
"Okay."
Nolan agreed absentmindedly, still tangled in the web of relationships.
At The Percy Mansion, Charles hung up the phone.
He leaned back on the couch, one hand on his forehead, deep in thought. Eugene had probably guessed Diana's identity, which was why he said those things.
Charles indeed wanted to announce Diana's identity soon and keep her in this house. But Diana was highly guarded; how would he get her to go out with him?
On the other side of the wall, Benjamin was playing a game with Diana, both holding controllers and maneuvering their characters on the screen.
Benjamin was quick to pick up any video game, a trait Dean believed he inherited from Diana.
Because of this, Diana and Benjamin were evenly matched, both thoroughly enjoying the game.
Diana couldn't help but recall the times she played with Charles. Compared to Benjamin, Charles' skills were lacking.
She couldn't help but laugh, and a mistake caused her character to fall, the screen flashing a big "FAILURE."
Benjamin, though he won, wasn't particularly happy. He turned to her, puzzled, "Mommy, what are you laughing at? You could have dodged that."
Diana shook her head with a smile, setting down the controller and pouring herself a glass of water, "Nothing, just thought the game was fun. I'm taking a break."
A knock on the door made Diana and Benjamin exchange glances. Benjamin volunteered, "It should be Mr. Hearst. Mommy, I'll get it."
Diana continued drinking her water, her eyes following Benjamin to the door.
As the door opened, Jacob stood there with a tray holding two glasses of milk.
"Good evening. I had the chef prepare some milk for you."
He paused for a moment, then bent down to Benjamin, "Benjamin, after you drink this, it's time for bed. Kids need plenty of sleep to grow up strong."
Benjamin glanced at the time. He wasn't very sleepy yet, but Jacob made a good point.
He puffed out his cheeks, reaching for the tray, but Jacob moved it away, looking at Diana, "Ms. Wipere, may I come in? Benjamin is too young to carry this."
Diana set down her glass, casually wiping the corner of her mouth, "Sure."
Jacob, receiving her approval, smiled and placed the milk on the table.
Benjamin took one of the glasses and handed it to Diana, "Ms. Wipere, you drink first."
