Chapter 469 Visit
Eugene waved his hand dismissively, sending the person away before turning to Benjamin and whispering, "Hey, stay in my office and play for a bit, alright? Don't wander around. I got some stuff to handle."
Benjamin nodded, "Okay."
Eugene's office wasn't huge, about half the size of Charles's. But it had a great spot, with a desk right in front of a big window that let in a ton of light.
As Eugene booted up his computer, he said, "Alright, come over here and play. Let me see what you wanna do."
There wasn't anything too important on the company computer, so he felt comfortable letting Benjamin use it. As long as the kid didn't break it, everything else was minor.
Benjamin's eyes lit up as he took the mouse and clicked a couple of times on the screen. A simple game website popped up, and he picked a single-player game. "Here, I'll play this."
Kids will be kids, Eugene thought with a smile. But now that Benjamin was busy, he could get some work done.
"Stay here and play. Don't run around. I'll be back soon," Eugene said, lifting Benjamin onto the chair and giving him a gentle reminder.
Benjamin nodded earnestly and started playing the game under Eugene's watchful eye. Once Eugene saw he was engrossed, he left the office.
As soon as Eugene was gone, Benjamin closed the game and started typing rapidly on the keyboard. His focused expression was just like Diana's. Lines of code danced across the screen, and soon Benjamin was logged into an internal network.
He had a special account here, and as soon as he logged in, several people noticed. They thought he had been out playing and started asking how it went.
Their concern warmed Benjamin's heart, and he smiled as he replied to a couple of them. Just then, there was a knock at the door.
The knock was loud and carried a hint of anger. Benjamin quickly exited the site and resumed playing the game, acting as if nothing had happened.
The person at the door knocked twice more before losing patience and barging in.
"Eugene, I see you're looking for trouble again..."
The speaker stopped mid-sentence when he saw Benjamin sitting at the desk. Frank had scheduled a meeting with a business partner today and had planned to bring Eugene along. But Eugene had insisted he had something more important to do and left early.
Now it was afternoon, and Eugene was nowhere to be found. The office staff said Eugene had returned, but here was only a five or six-year-old boy staring at him warily.
"Who are you?" they both asked simultaneously, recognizing something familiar in each other.
Benjamin remembered he was a guest here and spoke first, "I'm Benjamin," he paused, glancing at the nameplate on the desk, "Mr. Bailey's friend."
"Friend?" Frank looked him over and asked, "Are you from the Percy family?"
He wasn't sure, but the boy looked a lot like Charles, and Eugene was close to Charles. Frank took a guess.
When Benjamin nodded slowly, Frank's expression relaxed. "Hey there, I'm Frank Bailey, Eugene's brother. You can call me Mr. Bailey."
"Mr. Bailey," Benjamin said politely, making Frank smile.
Frank didn't know much about the Percy family, but this kid was clearly close to Charles, or Eugene wouldn't have brought him here. But now, Eugene had left the boy alone. Where had he gone?
Frank frowned and asked, "Do you know where Eugene went?"
"No," Benjamin shook his head, answering honestly. "He said he had something to do and told me to wait here."
Even though Frank knew his brother well, he couldn't help but feel frustrated. Eugene could be so unreliable. Leaving a child alone in an office full of potential hazards—what was he thinking?
Benjamin didn't know what Frank was thinking. He just thought Frank looked like a more serious version of Eugene. Blood relations were fascinating.
Frank cleared his throat and said, "You'll stay with me today. Don't run around."
Benjamin's fingers twitched, his eyes darting between the computer screen and Frank. After a moment, he asked, "What's in it for me? I want to play on the computer."
Frank raised an eyebrow at the question. "If you come with me, you can play on ten computers."
He had to show a business partner around the company that afternoon. The partner was from a well-known tech company, and the Bailey Group had a software development department. They had decided to collaborate. Frank had heard the partner had a child too, so bringing Benjamin along might help build rapport.
Frank waited for Benjamin's response, calculating his next move. Benjamin didn't care about the number of computers, but the idea intrigued him. More computers meant more staff, and maybe he could find someone to challenge.
"Okay, I'll go with you."
With that, the two reached an understanding. Frank extended his hand, and they left the office together.
The Bailey Group's software development department was on the 16th floor. It was the most expensive department, often spending a year on research only to produce a half-finished product. While their software development wasn't always successful, their security expertise was top-notch. The business partner had noticed this and proposed a collaboration.
In the 16th-floor reception room, a woman was resting her chin on her hand, looking bored. Ten minutes ago, Frank had left in a huff, and she had been waiting since. The secretary had brought her fruit and tea, apologizing for the delay.
The woman, young and without the arrogance of more seasoned professionals, decided to wait. She hadn't expected to see such an interesting scene.
Frank entered the reception room with Benjamin, drawing attention. Some people thought Benjamin was his son and greeted him warmly. This made the usually bold Benjamin a bit shy, and he clung to Frank's pant leg for security.
"Ms. Porter, I apologize for the delay. I'll show you around the 16th floor shortly," Frank said with a polite smile.
Isolde raised an eyebrow and pointed to the child at his side. "Is this why Mr. Bailey left? Your son?"
