Chapter 87 Punishment
When they tied the knot, Charles couldn't stand her. They couldn't even look at each other without tension, let alone touch. After the split, Diana always had this rebellious streak, constantly pushing his buttons, making him want to throttle her. Today's mess was also because Diana ticked him off.
But now, Diana was acting all submissive, like a kitten looking for some love. It threw Charles off, and before he knew it, he was gripping her jaw tight.
Diana's eyes filled with tears from the pain. She knew Charles was up to no good, just trying to catch her off guard. She bit down on his hand.
Feeling the warmth and the pain, Charles yanked his hand away, and Diana ended up on the carpet, her voice rising. "Charles, you don't want to see me, so I had to climb over the wall! Otherwise, should I meet you in a dream? If you think I disrespected your wall, feel free to come to my place and climb over mine."
Charles's eyes darkened as he showed her the bite mark. "Is this how you apologize?"
"You pinched me too hard; my jaw almost dislocated." Diana glanced at the bite mark, realizing she might've overreacted, her voice getting softer.
Charles squinted at the red mark on her cheek, rubbing his fingers. Her skin was so delicate, it marked easily. 'Is that my fault?'
Charles snorted, "You said you came to apologize, so tell me, what exactly did you do wrong?"
Diana stood up, looking down and fiddling with her fingers. She said softly, "Everything was wrong. Please, Mr. Percy, spare the Spencer Group."
"Be specific!" Charles barked.
Diana bit her lip. It wasn't that she didn't want to say; she really didn't know what she did wrong.
Charles grew impatient, lifting her face again. But this time, he didn't pinch; he just held her face straight and then let go. "Look at me and speak."
Diana thought fast and tentatively said, "I shouldn't have gone to Mirage Nights Club?"
Charles's expression softened for a moment. She indeed shouldn't have gone there; that place had all sorts of people. A woman like her, going there in pajamas in the middle of the night, would only be mistaken for a prostitute.
"And what else?" Charles pressed.
Diana unconsciously started biting her lip again, thinking before saying, "I shouldn't have been so arrogant when I saw you?"
But in her heart, she thought, 'Isn't my attitude respectful enough?'
Charles frowned. That night, Diana was hugging and cuddling with Billy, indeed arrogant. He reluctantly agreed with that. "And what else?"
"What else?" Diana racked her brain to come up with two things, and hearing him still asking, she felt her tone couldn't help but rise.
"Think carefully!" Charles's mood, which had just improved a bit, worsened again because of her expression.
Diana carefully recalled the events of that night and suddenly realized something! 'Could it be that Charles is angry because I said Billy is my boyfriend? That makes sense. After all, after the divorce, I quickly find a boyfriend with similar conditions to him and even flaunted it in front of him. If I am Charles, seeing my ex-wife living so comfortably after leaving me, I would probably be angry too.'
Charles noticed Diana's expression shift, thinking she was about to say something nice. But her next words made his face darken even more.
Diana said, "Sorry, Mr. Percy, I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have flaunted Billy in front of you. Even if it was a coincidence, I shouldn't have deliberately shown affection with him to anger you. I'm really sorry. I swear, I'll be with him secretly from now on and won't let him appear in front of you to annoy you."
She raised a hand as if swearing, adding, "Mr. Percy, you're so handsome; surely many beautiful women will like you and you'll be much happier than me!"
What a perfect speech, not only apologizing but also flattering him. She begged Charles to be merciful and forgive her quickly, but unfortunately, he didn't like what she said.
Seeing Diana admit to her relationship with Billy, Charles felt a mix of anger and inexplicable bitterness. 'Are they really a couple? How long has it been since the divorce? Did they start seeing each other while still married? No, at that time, Diana loved me so much, and Billy was abroad, so it couldn't be an affair. Then it must have been after the divorce. She moved on so quickly, even though she used to love me so much.'
Charles felt a mix of anger and inexplicable bitterness. His hands gradually clenched into fists, veins bulging on the back of his hands, looking very intimidating.
Seeing the situation turn bad, the moment he raised his hand, Diana immediately crouched down, covering her head, and exclaimed, "I'm sorry! Don't hit me! I'm very fragile; one punch and I'll die!"
Diana couldn't bear to imagine such a tragic scene; she didn't want to die.
A loud crash sounded in her ears, and something fell to the ground. Diana felt something hit her back twice, and it hurt!
Jacob heard the noise and immediately ran up, seeing Diana crouched on the ground amidst a mess. Since the last time a vase was smashed, there were no large porcelain or glass decorations in Charles's room. Unexpectedly, he had knocked over a small bookshelf in the room, and many books were now piled on the floor.
Jacob immediately spoke, "Mr. Percy, I'll get her out of here right away! Get up!" With that, Jacob went to pull Diana's arm.
Diana stood up and realized she was surrounded by books. It turned out it wasn't Charles who hit her, but the books that fell on her back. She wanted to touch the sore spot but didn't dare move. All she needed to do now was to leave quickly, so she didn't resist at all and followed Jacob out.
But Charles shouted angrily from behind, "Stop! Who allowed you to leave!" Diana and Jacob both paused.
Jacob felt a bit guilty, as he was the one who let Diana in. But he was sure Charles wanted to see Diana, just too embarrassed to say so. He didn't know what Diana had said to make Charles so angry.
He let go of Diana's arm, turned back respectfully, and bowed. "I'm very sorry, Mr. Percy. It's my fault for letting unauthorized personnel in. I voluntarily request a two-month salary deduction."
Charles's voice was cold. "It's not your fault. Diana, didn't you say you wanted to apologize? If you want me to spare the Spencer Group, show some sincerity."
Diana slowly turned back, wondering how Charles would humiliate her this time. If his demand was too excessive, she wouldn't comply.
Without any funding, she could still pull it off. Worst case, the Spencer Group went under again, and she revived it once she's got the cash. With that thought, Diana stood tall, no longer looking timid. "So, how does Mr. Percy want me to apologize?"
Charles didn't answer her. Instead, he turned to Jacob and said, "Jacob, go get some wine from the cellar. Nothing fancy, just drinkable."
