Chapter 480 Dinner Appointment
As the music played, the phone connected, and Isolde's voice came through.
"Evelyn, what's up? Did something happen to Cecil? Why are you calling me so late?"
Evelyn took a deep breath and replied, "Cecil's fine, he's at school. But there's something really important I need to tell you."
"Okay, I'm listening."
"Ms. Spencer is back. Diana, she's back."
Evelyn rarely called her by her first name, but to make Isolde believe her, she repeated it several times.
"I know it sounds crazy, but it's true. She's really back. She's right here with me."
The other end of the line fell silent. No one responded to her words.
Evelyn was momentarily stunned, thinking she might have accidentally hung up, but a glance at the screen showed the call was still connected.
She asked, puzzled, "Isolde, are you there?"
"I understand." Isolde finally spoke, but her reaction was much calmer than expected.
Diana's lips twitched; it seemed that after all this time, everyone had gradually forgotten her.
But the next second, Isolde's voice came through, choked with emotion, "Where are you? I'm coming to find you. Can Diana take the phone? I want to hear her voice."
Evelyn's face lit up with a smile, and she quickly handed the phone to Diana, "Ms. Spencer, quick! Take the call."
Diana hesitated as she took the phone, but before she could speak, she heard Isolde's familiar, trembling voice,
"Diana? Is it really you? You're alive."
Ever since she encountered Benjamin, she had a suspicion in her heart.
But the idea was too bold—a person who had been dead for five years suddenly coming back?
Moreover, things were calm on Charles's end.
Isolde had convinced herself she was wrong.
But today's call from Evelyn confirmed her suspicion, and she couldn't wait to see Diana.
"Isolde, long time no see." Diana finally spoke, and the next second, Isolde, like Evelyn, couldn't control her tears and started crying.
But she was still at work and couldn't lose her composure, so she quickly covered her mouth to calm down.
Hearing her cry, Diana felt a pang of sadness.
She didn't want these kind-hearted women to cry for her, so she tried to comfort her, "Isolde, don't cry. Isn't it a good thing that I'm alive? How have you been lately? Is Cecil in school now?"
She tried to change the subject, and Isolde gradually stopped crying, sniffling as she scolded, "You heartless woman! Why didn't you contact me if you were alive? Afraid I'd sell you out? And you have the nerve to tell me not to cry. When the news of your death came, I cried for three days and nights, my eyes were swollen. How are you going to make up for that? Even my dead ex-husband didn't make me cry like that. Diana, you jerk."
"Exactly, Ms. Spencer, you're really bad..."
Evelyn chimed in from the side.
Diana gave a bitter smile and resignedly apologized to them, "I'm sorry, Isolde, and I'm sorry, Evelyn. It's all my fault."
She had always thought she had no attachment to Evergreen City, but these lively women still tugged at her heart.
Diana's heart softened, and she wiped away the tears at the corner of her eyes, speaking softly, "As an apology, I'll treat you both to dinner. Order the most expensive dishes, I'll pay!"
"One meal and you think you can get away with it? Nice try."
Isolde laughed and cried at the same time. If her subordinates were here, they'd probably think she was going crazy.
"I'm going to mooch off you for life."
"Me too!"
Evelyn wasn't about to be left out.
Afraid Diana might change her mind, Isolde quickly said, "I'll book a place right now and send the details to Evelyn. You have to come. If you don't..."
She paused, seemingly thinking of a way to threaten Diana.
But afraid of scaring her, Isolde gritted her teeth and continued, "If you don't come, I'll come and drag you there myself!"
Her words had a bit of Charles's tone but were not at all off-putting.
Diana smiled and nodded repeatedly, "Alright, even if it's raining knives, I'll hold up a shield and come pay for your meal."
After they finished talking, Isolde quickly hung up the phone. She wiped her tears, composed herself, and called her assistant in.
"What's the schedule for today?"
"Ms. Porter, there's a meeting in the afternoon, and the new software needs testing..."
The assistant reported the work plan as usual, but for the first time, the always diligent Isolde waved her hand and said,
"Push everything to tomorrow. I have something important today."
The assistant's expression froze, instinctively shaking his head, "Ms. Porter, these were scheduled in advance, and you must be present for the software testing..."
Isolde's assistant was good at everything but too rigid and inflexible.
Seeing him so dazed, Isolde asked, "Will the company collapse if I don't go?"
"No."
"Then why are you talking so much? Am I the boss, or are you the boss?"
The assistant snapped out of it after her scolding and quickly nodded in agreement, "Alright, Ms. Porter, I'll push everything."
He turned to leave, but Isolde called him back, "Wait, I'm not done yet."
"Okay, go ahead."
"Book a private room at the Golden Shine Club, the best and most expensive one."
Golden Shine Club was an entertainment venue in Evergreen City, unlike Mirage Nights Club, which had ties to shady businesses.
Golden Shine Club was more reputable and not under Charles's control.
It was the perfect place to meet Diana for dinner.
The assistant quickly noted it down and rushed out to get things done.
Meanwhile, although Diana had agreed to meet, the man in black was still following her. Plus, she had promised to have lunch with Charles earlier, and now she had other plans, so she had to tell him.
But she hesitated on how to bring it up.
The man in black didn't know what the two women had talked about that made them laugh and cry, but hearing they were going to have dinner, he immediately reminded her, "Mrs. Percy, you should call Mr. Percy and let him know."
Evelyn looked at Diana with concern.
Diana was entangled with Charles again. When would this end?
"You call him for me, just let him know."
The man in black's reminder was timely, and Diana was eager to pass the task to him.
But the bodyguard wasn't easily fooled. He gripped the steering wheel and replied, "This is between Mrs. Percy and Mr. Percy. I can't interfere. If Mrs. Percy doesn't call, I'll take you both back to the office."
"Wait! No! I'll call, I'll call, okay?"
Diana quickly stopped him, ultimately compromising.
It's just a phone call, and besides, she's having dinner with Isolde, not another man.
Charles should agree, right?
She tried to convince herself as she took out her phone.
Evelyn knew she was struggling and couldn't help but whisper, "Ms. Spencer, maybe we should forget it. I'll talk to Ms. Porter, she should understand."
"No, we have to have this dinner today."
Evelyn's timid demeanor spurred Diana's courage, and she quickly dialed Charles's number.
