Chapter 187 Negotiation
"Here I am!"
Nathan hadn't spoken in ages, so his voice came out all scratchy. After just a few words, he started hacking up a lung.
With the sound of metal clanging, the cell door swung open. Two guards flanked him, urging him out.
He kept his head down, shoulders slumped, and shuffled out of the cell without a fuss.
Usually, there was a special room for visits, but for some reason, they took Nathan to the interrogation room this time.
The interrogation room was designed to mess with suspects' heads—dark, damp, with hands cuffed to a cold, hard table, and an uncomfortable stool.
When a big light flicked on, Nathan squinted, taking a moment to adjust to the brightness.
But when he finally saw who was sitting across from him, he couldn't believe it. "Diana?"
It wasn't just her being there that shocked him, but the fact that they were meeting in such a place.
Before this, Nathan had pictured them talking face to face, on equal footing.
But the Diana in front of him looked down at him with a cold expression.
For a moment, her face overlapped with the late Bianca's in his mind. His heart skipped a beat; the resemblance was eerie.
Diana looked a lot like her mother, Bianca, especially around the mouth and nose. As he stared at her, he couldn't help but notice she didn't seem to have any of his features.
As his gaze shifted, he noticed a man standing next to Diana. It was Robert. He thought, 'This annoying lawyer, always Diana's loyal sidekick.'
Nathan gritted his teeth, his cuffed hands clenching into fists, his eyes full of questions. "Didn't you say we were going to talk today? Is this your idea of negotiation? What did you tell the cops to make them treat me like a criminal?"
While Nathan was eyeing Diana, she was sizing him up too.
He looked worse than Clara, his hair shaved off because of prison, his uniform loose and worn. His once smooth chin was now covered in stubble, his face tired and worn out, clearly not having a good time in jail.
Seeing him in such a bad state, Diana felt a warm satisfaction inside.
She smirked, her tone light, "Long time no see, Mr. Williams. I guess you don't want to catch up, so I'll get straight to the point."
"Didn't you hear me asking you all those questions?" Nathan's anger flared as Diana ignored him.
This kind of disregard, like a superior looking down on an inferior, he would never allow it between them.
"Mr. Williams, watch your attitude." Diana's face darkened, her sharp gaze seeming to pierce through Nathan's façade of strength, straight into his vulnerable core.
She added, "Now that the Williams family is completely defeated, you get who's in charge of this negotiation, right?"
Nathan lowered his head and stayed silent, but the rapid beating of his heart gave away his bluff.
He didn't want to admit he was cornered, desperately hoping Diana would show him some mercy.
For a moment, the three of them fell into silence.
Outside the interrogation room, three cops and Clara's two bodyguards watched the scene through a one-way mirror.
The three cops stood together, two of them young, fidgeting uncomfortably.
"Captain West letting this Ms. Spencer go into the interrogation room alone with the prisoner, isn't that a bit much?" one of them asked.
Another chimed in, "Yeah, this is too risky. Even the listening devices are off; we can't hear what they're saying."
The middle-aged officer, Casey West, who was called the captain, stood there with his arms crossed, keeping an eye on the situation inside.
Hearing his two subordinates, Casey couldn't help but knock on their heads, lowering his voice, "You guys don't get it, this Ms. Spencer is no ordinary person."
The two officers rubbed their heads, looking puzzled. They couldn't see anything special about Diana, though she was undeniably beautiful.
It was hard not to suspect that Casey was letting her act so high and mighty in the station because he had a thing for her.
Seeing them still clueless, Casey said disappointedly, "Recently, we busted two major smuggling rings and arrested a ton of people. Do you think that was just a coincidence?"
One of the officers shook his head, saying seriously, "Of course not, it's all thanks to our hard work."
The next second, Casey's fist landed on his head again.
Casey gritted his teeth, cursing himself for bringing along two idiots.
"Those gangs were slippery as hell. We tried so many times and got nowhere, even got played. Do you really think we caught them just by working hard?"
Another officer, seeing his buddy get hit, cautiously asked, "Could it be that catching them had something to do with this Ms. Spencer?"
After speaking, he covered his head, bracing for another hit.
Casey glanced at him and snorted, "Yeah, this Ms. Spencer, even though she hadn't shown up here before, handed over the gangs' whereabouts directly to the chief."
The two officers were stunned, turning to look at Diana inside.
These weren't just any criminals; catching one was a big deal. It was a chance to climb the ranks.
"My God, how is this Ms. Spencer so incredible!"
Casey shook his head, "It's not just her. I heard from the chief that she has a hacker friend, a patriot from our country who's abroad. Even from across the ocean, he can take down criminals in one go and do good deeds without leaving a trace. That's why we treat Ms. Spencer with special care. Even if she beat up the chief, the leaders would probably praise her for her strength."
After saying that, he sighed and waved his hand, "Everyone has their own fate. Just do your job well and don't cause trouble for me."
The two young officers nodded, looking at Diana with newfound admiration.
Inside the interrogation room, Nathan had been silent for so long that Diana was getting impatient.
She tucked a stray hair behind her ear, her tone cold, "Mr. Williams, have you thought it through? I'm here to talk about the transfer of shares. The 15% you took from my mother, it's time to give them back. You can't use them in prison anyway."
Nathan raised his head, his face pale, lips trembling, "Diana, please, let us go. You have everything now. Clara told me you're pregnant. Once the baby is born, you'll be the mother of the Percy heir. No one would dare touch you. Why can't you let us enjoy some benefits too?"
If it were the old Diana, those words would have hurt her deeply.
But the Diana in front of him didn't flinch. She covered her mouth with one hand, yawning.
"Mr. Williams, have you forgotten? We already cut ties and signed the documents. It's legally binding."
Her voice was lazy, her eyes full of contempt, not disappointment in Nathan, but disdain.
"If I remember correctly, last time in the hospital, you almost killed my child. What do you think Mr. Percy would do if he knew about this?" Diana touched her belly, looking like a loving mother, "This is the only heir of the Percy family, almost died at your hands."
