Chapter 548 Extreme Escape
The shareholders' meeting was set for two hours later to give everyone time to gather.
Benjamin was stuck in a basement. To keep the other shareholders from getting suspicious, Zachary stepped out of the meeting to take a call.
Benjamin sat alone in the basement, in the same spot he'd been in since the start. His body was starting to go numb.
He tried to move his legs, and a dull pain spread through him.
Tears welled up in his eyes, but he forced them back.
Now that Zachary was gone, he couldn't just sit there and wait. He had to let his mom know what was happening.
Benjamin pinned all his hopes on his watch.
He struggled to twist his wrist, the rough rope chafing his delicate skin, leaving red marks.
Gritting his teeth, Benjamin knew that with his small hands and flexible bones, he could slip out of the ropes if he tried hard enough.
Just as he was about to succeed, hurried footsteps echoed down the stairs. Zachary had returned unexpectedly.
He caught Benjamin in the act of trying to escape.
Zachary's eyes were bloodshot with rage. He raised his hand and struck Benjamin hard.
Even though Benjamin rolled to the ground just in time, the slap still hurt.
"What do you have on you? Why did they find us so quickly?"
The shareholders' meeting was just a ruse. As soon as Zachary connected to the internet and sat down at his computer, his men informed him that a group of police officers was on their way. They had to relocate immediately.
This was one of his private residences, well-hidden. Even if Charles wanted to search, it would take him a couple of days.
So why had the police arrived so quickly?
Zachary quickly realized it must be something Benjamin had on him.
Panic mixed with anger, and Zachary lost all reason. He grabbed Benjamin again, shouting furiously.
"I underestimated you, you little brat."
He cursed as he searched Benjamin, finally spotting the watch on his wrist.
Benjamin, who had been silent despite the beating, let out a piercing scream when Zachary tried to take off the watch.
He was slapped again, and the watch was ripped off and thrown to the ground.
Zachary stomped on it, smashing it to pieces, then gagged Benjamin and dragged him outside.
Benjamin's hope shattered like the watch. He could no longer scream, and Zachary's curses filled his ears.
"They've abandoned you. I'll take you down with me!"
With that, Zachary threw him into the trunk, and everything went dark for Benjamin.
-
The sharp wail of police sirens echoed along the highway, a sound that made hearts race with anxiety.
Several cars sped behind the police, all focused on the black Maybach at the front.
Diana gripped the steering wheel tightly, her eyes blazing with determination.
Charles, in the passenger seat, looked as stormy as the sky before a tempest, his hands clenched so tightly his knuckles were white.
The police radio crackled with updates,
"The suspect is heading towards Azure Shoreline Drive. Accelerate the pursuit."
More static followed, then a stern voice over the radio,
"Pull over immediately. You are surrounded. Running is futile. Stop now, and your lawyer might still have a chance to defend you."
Inside the black car, Zachary's face twisted with rage. The threats and sirens had driven him to the brink of madness.
He would never be caught! Never!
Diana floored the gas pedal, her car shooting forward like an arrow. She bit her lip, eyes locked on Zachary's car.
In the rearview mirror, Zachary saw them closing in and grinned maniacally, yanking the steering wheel to swerve dangerously, trying to shake them off.
"He's heading for the cliff!"
Charles quickly realized Zachary's plan, a sense of dread washing over him. The road ran along a cliffside, and if they went over, the consequences would be disastrous.
Diana didn't hesitate, accelerating again. Her eyes were steely, her mind focused on one thing: saving the child at all costs.
She sped past the police cars, the screeching of brakes and honking of horns filling the air as other vehicles swerved out of the way.
Zachary saw them getting closer, a look of determination crossing his face.
He suddenly floored the gas, aiming for the cliff. Diana's heart leapt into her throat. She chased after him, and just before they reached the edge, she swerved her car in front of his.
A loud crash echoed as the two cars collided. The impact threw Diana forward, but in that critical moment, Charles shielded her with his body, absorbing the brunt of the force.
The sound of shattering glass and twisting metal was deafening. But Diana seemed to hear nothing, her eyes wide with horror as she looked at Charles.
Blood trickled from his forehead, down his face, his eyes growing unfocused.
"Charles! Charles!"
She called his name frantically. The delay allowed the police to catch up.
They saw the wreckage and the cars teetering on the edge of the cliff, their hearts pounding.
They were just moments away from plunging into the sea.
The police quickly moved in, pulling Zachary from his car. Dazed from the crash, he barely resisted as they cuffed him.
"You're coming with us, sir."
Meanwhile, other officers rushed to Diana's car.
The door was badly damaged from the crash.
The person in the passenger seat...
But when they opened the door, they found Diana pressing on Charles's bleeding wound, her face pale, ears ringing so loudly she couldn't hear the officers calling her.
"Hold on, the ambulance is on its way."
Charles's lips moved, his voice barely a whisper,
"You're... okay... that's good..."
"Don't talk, please don't talk."
Diana held his hand tightly, afraid to let go. Charles's eyes suddenly cleared, locking onto Diana's, his pupils dilating.
"I remember... everything..."
The buzzing in Diana's head stopped abruptly. She heard his words clearly.
She watched as his expression shifted from confusion to shock, then to a blank stare.
The next moment, she was pulled out by the police.
The sound of the ambulance siren grew louder. Diana's body trembled uncontrollably. Dean and Nolan rushed over, Dean supporting her, asking with concern,
"Are you okay? How are you?"
Diana snapped back to reality, her words stumbling out,
"Benjamin, what about Benjamin?"
"He's fine. He's safe. The ambulance took him."
Dean answered quickly, but the next moment, Diana sighed in relief and collapsed, fainting completely.
