Chapter 344 Chatting on the Rooftop
"Missing? Where did it go? Have you checked the surveillance footage?"
Charles' brow furrowed deeply, his emotions even more intense than when he found out three hundred million dollars had been moved from his account earlier that day.
"Yeah, we checked. Snowy ran out of the camera's range and then just vanished. Snowy's always been smart and usually comes back home. But it's late now, and the staff have searched everywhere without any luck."
Jacob's voice sounded older, more worn. Snowy was the dog Diana had left behind.
After she passed away, Charles, who never liked dogs, didn't give it away. Instead, he had the staff take good care of it.
He even let Snowy roam freely without a collar, given the vast expanse of The Percy Mansion.
Snowy was clever and had never caused any trouble before, but now it was nowhere to be found.
Jacob didn't dare delay and quickly informed Charles, hoping he would mobilize more people to search.
"Got it. I'll have people look for it. Everyone at home should keep an eye out too."
Charles' voice was low, his mood growing more irritable.
After hanging up, his anger only intensified.
Today, first someone steals his money, now his dog.
Those thieves better hope they don't get caught, or they'll be sorry.
Unable to sleep, Charles picked up his phone and called Eugene.
Eugene was at a bar, enjoying the nightlife. The music was so loud that it took him a while to notice his phone ringing.
"What's up, Charles? Miss me?"
Eugene's voice was lazy, and he gestured for a kiss from the girl next to him as he spoke.
Charles' voice was cold. Hearing the cheerful atmosphere on Eugene's end only fueled his anger.
"Be at the top floor of The Percy Group in thirty minutes."
He hung up immediately, not giving Eugene a chance to refuse.
Eugene's eyes widened, and the girl's kiss suddenly lost its charm.
He exclaimed, "What do you mean, in the middle of the night, going to the top floor?"
But all he got in response was the busy signal.
A wave of unease washed over him. He pushed the girl away.
She pouted, clearly displeased, "Eugene, what do you mean, kiss and run?"
Eugene hurriedly got out of the booth, "A friend is heartbroken and about to jump. I gotta go."
He sped through the city, running two red lights, cutting a thirty-minute drive down to twenty.
When he arrived, breathless, at the top floor of The Percy Group, he found it set up with tables and chairs, fairy lights strung along the railing.
Seeing him, Charles raised an eyebrow, "You're fast."
He poured himself a drink and sipped it slowly.
Eugene stood there, his expression beyond exasperated.
Seeing him frozen, Charles frowned, "Why are you just standing there? Come have a drink with me."
Eugene finally moved, walking over, "You called me up here in the middle of the night for this?"
"What else?"
Charles glanced at him indifferently and continued drinking.
"Damn it, I thought you were going to kill yourself. I nearly broke the gas pedal. Couldn't we have had a drink at Mirage Nights Club? What's the point of drinking here? You scared the hell out of me!"
Charles' mood improved slightly at Eugene's disheveled state.
He let out a mocking snort and replied, "If I killed myself, who would take over The Percy Group? Are you stupid? Mirage Nights Club is too noisy. This place is just right."
Eugene realized Charles would never commit suicide.
But ever since Diana's death, his mental state had been shaky. If he started hallucinating again, it wasn't impossible for him to die quietly.
Though Eugene didn't want to bring it up, he asked, "What did Dr. Garcia say about your condition?"
Charles was silent for a moment, then said, "It's cured."
Eugene didn't believe him but nodded along, "That's good."
For a moment, neither spoke. Then, unusually, Charles broke the silence, "I'm getting married."
Eugene was stunned, thinking of the actress who looked so much like Diana, "Stella?"
"Yes."
"You're marrying her?"
"She wants the title of Mrs. Percy, so I'm giving it to her."
When Charles suddenly got engaged, Eugene understood the real reason the moment he saw Stella.
Wasn't it just finding a similar substitute for some solace? How did it escalate to marriage now?
If it were any other girl, Eugene would have been happy for Charles.
But Stella looked too much like Diana. With such a similar face constantly by his side, how could Charles claim with a straight face that he was over his illness?
It was simply unbelievable.
However, who Charles chose to marry was none of Eugene's business.
After a moment, he said, "If you've decided, then go ahead. I'll send a gift, but I won't be able to attend. I'll be out of town."
Eugene couldn't accept Stella as Charles' wife. Their social circle had its own hierarchy.
The White Group had risen thanks to The Percy Group, and many resented it.
Plus, Stella was a big name in the entertainment industry. Would she give up her career for family after marriage?
What if she had to do kissing or bed scenes? What man could accept that?
"I haven't set a date yet."
Charles' eyes were sharp, seeing through Eugene's lie.
The Bailey family had nothing to do, and Eugene was definitely not going on a business trip. A vacation, maybe.
Eugene calmly took a sip of his drink, "I just don't want to run into my dad and Frank at the wedding. They're pushing me to get married. I used to use you as an excuse, but once you're married, they'll be all over me."
Charles didn't press further, just nodded lightly. Then he continued, "Something interesting happened recently."
"What?"
Eugene's expression grew serious. This was probably why Charles had called him over.
"My personal account was hacked, and three hundred million dollars were stolen."
"How much? Three hundred million? Who's that bold? Do they have a death wish? Stealing from you?"
Eugene's eyes widened in shock. Charles' personal account was overseas, heavily protected. Stealing from him was like pulling a tiger's whiskers.
"No leads yet. The person is smart, and the IP is still abroad. I'll keep looking until I find them."
Eugene, now a bit amused, said, "Great, let me know when you catch them. I want to see who has the guts."
"By the way, isn't this something hackers are good at? I heard Sword of Damocles' A is back. Why not ask A?" Eugene suggested.
A few years ago, Sword of Damocles underwent major changes, and the once-vanished A returned, becoming the chief again.
That person was highly skilled. Finding the thief would be quick work.
Charles looked up and replied, "A doesn't take just any job. Besides, the current A isn't the same as before. New talent has taken over the code name. My tech team needs the practice anyway."
Eugene stretched, "Alright."
Charles would find a way, as always.
