Chapter 229 Compliance
Evelyn was totally thrown off by how the servants and Jacob were acting. It was almost time for Diana to wake up, so she figured she'd head upstairs to chat with her.
But then, she spotted Diana's slippers right next to the living room sofa.
When she walked into the room, Evelyn noticed the bed was missing its blankets.
She got even more confused and thought, 'What's up with everything this morning?'
"Ms. Spencer, why are your shoes downstairs? Pregnant women shouldn't be walking around barefoot. Put them on, quick." As Evelyn spoke, she placed the shoes next to Diana.
Seeing her put them on, Evelyn couldn't help but ask, "Ms. Spencer, where's your blanket?"
Diana hesitated. It was best not to mention she had slept with Charles.
So she looked down and said, "I accidentally spilled water on it this morning, so the servants took it away."
That explanation seemed totally normal, so Evelyn didn't think much of it and changed the subject.
"Ms. Spencer, after you freshen up, come downstairs for breakfast. We have your favorite dessert today."
Diana, who had been feeling a bit irritable due to the morning's events, immediately smiled upon hearing her words.
In The Percy Mansion, the only things that could cheer her up were Evelyn and delicious food.
But when she finished freshening up and came to the dining room, she found the last person she wanted to see sitting at the head of the table.
Charles was stirring the oatmeal in his bowl and looked up slightly when he heard footsteps.
Diana felt his gaze on her and her expression immediately turned cold.
Logically, this was The Percy Mansion, and Charles, as the master of the house, shouldn't have been "the person she least wanted to see."
Usually, Diana was used to dining with Evelyn, but now that he was here, Evelyn could only stand aside.
She also gave Diana a quick shake of her head, clearly worried that Diana might suddenly invite her to join them.
She didn't want to dine with Charles; it was too scary for her.
Apparently, Diana had the same thought. She paused and didn't sit down.
After standing for a while, Charles frowned and reminded her, "Why are you standing there?"
Diana took a step back and said, "I'm suddenly not hungry. I'll leave first."
Seeing her avoiding him again, Charles frowned even more, and the anger from earlier in the room almost resurfaced.
His eyes deepened, and he ordered, "Sit down and eat."
Noticing his expression, Diana realized that Charles was angry.
But she had no idea why he was angry.
Still, she obediently sat back at the table, picked up a piece of toast, and began to eat in small bites.
When he saw her compliance, Charles's expression softened a bit.
The atmosphere at the table became eerily quiet.
Only the sound of cups and bowls clinking against the table could be heard.
Usually, Diana would chat with Evelyn while dining, which wasn't a good habit.
But this lack of decorum gave a special sense of "home."
Now, as she dined with Charles, it was unusually quiet.
Diana hurried through her meal. Although she arrived late, she finished in five minutes and wiped her mouth, ready to leave.
Seeing her stand up, Charles glanced over and noticed she had only eaten a bit of bread.
He remembered holding her last night and barely exerting any effort.
Pregnant women were supposed to gain some weight, but Diana looked even thinner.
"Eat some more," he said, pausing.
"I'm full," Diana said.
"How can you be full with so little? Even if you don't eat, my child needs nourishment." When he noticed her dismissive attitude, Charles's tone became angry.
Sensing the tension, Jacob and Evelyn quickly tried to ease the atmosphere.
Evelyn said, "Ms. Spencer, please eat a bit more. Being pregnant is when you need the most nutrition."
"Mr. Percy, if Ms. Spencer doesn't want to eat, it's fine. She doesn't have a big appetite," Jacob added.
They hadn't planned this, so their words were all over the place.
But at least it worked a little.
Diana slowly sat back down.
She wasn't actually full. She had planned to eat more after Charles left for work, but now she feared angering him again, so she decided to comply.
Besides, for the baby to develop healthily, she needed to eat well to escape with him.
Charles never liked people around him being out of his control. When he saw her compliance, his frown relaxed a bit.
He casually picked up an empty bowl and served Diana a bowl of oatmeal.
Evelyn's oatmeal, made with Kennedy's recipe, was delicious with added bananas and honey, making it fragrant and sticky.
Logically, it should have suited Diana's taste, but now she frowned, staring seriously at the oatmeal.
She wanted to send the oatmeal for testing, as Charles had been acting too strange today.
To be precise, he had been acting strange since last night.
After arguing, he still served her oatmeal?
If there wasn't something in the oatmeal, Diana couldn't think of any other reason.
Seeing her staring blankly, Charles tapped the table with his knuckles and gently reminded her, "Eat."
Diana snapped back to reality, her expression serious. Under his gaze, she reluctantly took a spoonful of oatmeal.
Charles didn't notice her expression. He rarely ate such food at home, and today, thanks to Diana, he was having some.
With enough sleep, delicious food, and the person he liked sitting next to him, he felt a rare sense of relaxation.
But Charles never showed his emotions, and only Jacob could tell he was in a good mood.
His smile, which had been present all morning, deepened, and the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes looked like a goldfish's tail.
Indeed, Juniper had chosen well; Diana and Charles were a perfect match.
Charles enjoyed his meal, but Diana felt as if she were treading on thin ice.
Fortunately, he had to go to the Percy Group and didn't watch her finish eating.
On the way to the Percy Group, Charles's phone rang.
He answered, and Eugene's playful whistle came through, "Mr. Percy, how was last night? Did you treat Diana gently?"
In his suggestion last night, Eugene believed the most important thing was Charles's demeanor.
Nowadays, men who knew how to take care of their partners were popular. As long as he was gentle, everything else would be fine.
But as he asked, Charles fell silent.
"Why aren't you keeping silent? Mr. Percy, are you shy because it's your first time pursuing a girl?" Eugene teased, but Charles remained silent.
If it weren't for the sound of his breathing, Eugene would have thought the call hadn't connected.
Logically, even if Charles hadn't taken action, he should have scolded him for the question. This silence was unusual.
Eugene pondered and wanted to ask more.
But this time, Charles decisively hung up.
Though his expression appeared calm and indifferent, his eyes revealed the complex emotions he felt inside.
Eugene's call had reminded him of all his interactions with Diana since last night.
He thought he had been quite gentle.
With this conflict in mind, Charles asked Nolan as soon as he saw him, "Do I sound gentle when I speak?"
Nolan, who was about to report on work, paused. What was Charles up to now?
But as a professional assistant, Nolan answered truthfully, "As usual, very authoritative."
Charles frowned, feeling a bit frustrated.
He had tried to make his expression look gentle and had softened his voice. What did it take to be gentle?
