Chapter 495 Talks
Hearing this, Charles paused, his brow furrowing. He didn't respond right away.
If he gave money and gifts, it wasn't just about whether Diana would accept them.
It would make their relationship seem more like a business deal.
This thought bothered Charles.
He and Diana were in love; how could he reduce it to a financial transaction?
While he was lost in his thoughts, Diana pursed her lips and said, "I want to meet with Benjamin."
She probably shouldn't have brought up Benjamin right now. After all, their current relationship was just that of a wealthy kid and his caretaker, with no urgent need for a meeting.
But Benjamin's birthday was coming up. He was more sensitive and delicate than most kids. If he weren't in the Rainbow Federation with Diana by his side, he would have thrown a fit by now.
As expected, Charles raised an eyebrow at her request. "You care about him a lot?"
He wasn't dumb. This level of concern was beyond their usual relationship.
Diana kept her cool and said seriously, "I just don't want to disappoint a kid. Besides, according to our agreement, I can meet with him."
She wasn't sure if this reason would convince Charles.
Diana felt anxious inside; she was making things up as she went along.
But Charles had his own thoughts.
He remembered Benjamin's birthday was coming up. Considering Benjamin's recent changes, he did deserve some kind of reward.
Since Diana had brought it up, he saw no need to dwell on it. It was a win-win situation.
"Alright, I'll arrange for you two to meet. Anything else you need?"
He agreed quickly, even thoughtfully asking if she had any other requests.
Seeing her goal achieved, Diana pulled the thin blanket up and lost interest in continuing the conversation. "No, you can go now."
"Okay."
Once he left, Diana, who had been serious, let out a sigh of relief and began to look around.
The room wasn't large, and its decor was as simple as an office.
There were a few clothes hanging on a nearby rack and some men's toiletries on the dressing table.
It seemed this was Charles's resting place at the company.
Diana glanced at the door. She was completely naked and couldn't go out to explore. She had to wait for someone to bring her clothes.
Fortunately, she found her phone on the table.
Unlocking the screen, a flood of messages popped up.
There were texts from Isolde, Evelyn, and Robert.
She skimmed through them, confirming there was nothing urgent, and opened her chat with Benjamin.
Taking a deep breath, she cautiously sent a message.
She wanted to call him directly, but Charles had tampered with her phone. She couldn't be too bold and quickly typed out a message.
Diana: [Sweetie, I managed to get us a meeting. Be good at the Percy Mansion. I'll see you soon.]
At the Percy Mansion.
The living room floor was littered with toys and snacks. The TV screen displayed a two-player game.
Benjamin and Eugene, one big and one small, sat in front of the screen, each holding a game controller.
With serious expressions, they manipulated their controllers until the screen finally flashed a "Victory" animation.
Eugene dropped his controller in disbelief. "How do you keep winning, kid?"
Eugene had been at the Percy Mansion for several hours. They had read books and watched TV together.
When Benjamin lost interest, Jacob brought out some game cartridges for them to choose from.
Benjamin hadn't wanted to play. These games were child's play to him, but Eugene was eager and handed him a controller.
So they started playing in silence.
Despite his young age, Benjamin was fiercely competitive.
Eugene claimed he was just playing for fun, but after several rounds, his wins were far fewer than Benjamin's.
This embarrassing fact made him lose interest in the game.
Eugene leaned back, supporting himself with his hands, and asked, "All these games, computers, and codes—did your mom teach you?"
Benjamin paused, his fingers on the controller buttons. "My mommy is amazing."
He pressed his lips together, not wanting to say more.
Eugene looked at his small figure, puzzled.
He had heard that Benjamin's mom was just a waitress. Could she really be so capable, raising such an exceptional child?
What a pity, such a smart kid belonged to Zachary.
"How was today? Did you have fun?"
It was getting late, and Eugene wanted to know how his day of looking after Benjamin had gone.
But Benjamin still seemed uninterested, unable to muster enthusiasm for anything.
To avoid making Eugene feel awkward, he quietly replied, "Yeah, I had fun."
Seeing his attitude, Eugene grew anxious.
Kids Benjamin's age were usually lively and active. From their previous interactions, Benjamin had seemed outgoing.
Now, he was becoming more withdrawn, making Eugene worry he might have some psychological trauma.
"Are you sure? You can tell me anything. I can help."
Eugene valued his responsibility of looking after Benjamin. If something went wrong, Charles would kill him.
Benjamin yawned, ignoring Eugene's words.
He stood up and started to shoo Eugene away. "Mr. Bailey, I need to rest. You can go home now. Thanks for playing with me today."
He picked up a teddy bear from the floor and silently sat back on the couch.
Anyone else would have left by now, but not Eugene.
He naturally ignored Benjamin's distant attitude and sat beside him, asking, "Why do you always look so serious? Charles asked me to take care of you, and you seem unhappy. If he sees this, I'll be in trouble."
Hearing this, and thinking of Charles's usual demeanor, Benjamin's face tightened. "Is Mr. Percy mean to you too?"
"Of course, he's cold to everyone."
Eugene spoke casually but then chuckled, correcting himself, "Well, not everyone. He's nicer to you than to me."
Seeing Eugene's cheerful attitude despite his complaints, Benjamin felt puzzled.
Could Eugene be a masochist? Charles treated him poorly, yet he still worked for him.
Kids can't hide their curiosity, so Benjamin asked directly.
Eugene was momentarily taken aback but then became unusually serious.
His gaze fixed on a point in the air, as if recalling something.
After a moment, he spoke slowly, "Benjamin, people have many sides. Just because someone seems cold doesn't mean they're bad."
