Chapter 367 Be Hunted Down
This wasn't like Elise at all. How could she be so calm after losing her own child?
Nolan's mind drifted back to when Charles lost his child. Even an unborn baby had moved Charles deeply, let alone Zachary, who had been raised for over twenty years.
"Elise is way too calm," Nolan concluded.
"I see," Charles responded casually.
He had long noticed Elise's unusual behavior but couldn't figure out her intentions, so he decided to play along for now.
"Mr. Percy, we don't have a blood sample from Zachary. We can only determine anything after finding his mother."
"Then keep looking," Charles ordered.
Benjamin was in his hands now. If that woman wanted to use Benjamin to gain wealth and status, she would have to go through him first.
The next morning, the car drove smoothly down the road. An escort car was arranged both in front and behind them.
In the back seat, Benjamin was drowsy. He had been too excited to sleep the night before, thinking about attending the press conference.
He only fell asleep in the early hours and was woken up by Jacob after a few hours of light sleep. After eating and getting ready, he was sent to the car.
Seeing how tired he was, Charles considered letting him go back to rest.
But Benjamin clung to his leg, shaking his head and insisting on staying awake until the car started moving.
Once they left the villa, Benjamin began to nod off.
Charles discreetly shifted his position, gently supporting Benjamin's head as it was about to hit the seat. He laid him down to rest on his lap, and Benjamin fell into a deep sleep.
A hint of tenderness flashed in Charles' eyes as he lightly touched Benjamin's forehead, brushing his hair aside. But the peaceful moment didn't last long.
Suddenly, the car they were in came to a screeching halt.
The sudden stop almost threw Benjamin forward, but Charles quickly pulled him into his arms. The tires left deep skid marks on the road.
The driver was breathing heavily. The escort car in front of them had been hit and thrown two or three hundred feet away, completely wrecked.
If Charles and Benjamin had been in that car, the consequences would have been unimaginable.
"What happened..." Benjamin groggily opened his eyes, his heart racing. The car had been driving smoothly, so why the sudden stop?
He tried to look up, but before he could finish his sentence, a large hand covered his eyes.
Charles held him close, pressing his head against his chest. "Close your eyes. No matter what happens, don't open them."
His tone was serious, carrying an undeniable authority. Benjamin's voice was muffled, "Why?"
A loud crash interrupted them. Their car had been hit. Benjamin felt the world spinning.
A van was ramming into them from the left, the door already caving in. If it continued, their car would eventually flip.
"Mr. Percy, they're doing this on purpose," the driver said.
"Keep driving!" Charles' eyes darkened. His car had been modified and wasn't easily damaged, but with Benjamin inside, he couldn't take any risks.
As soon as he finished speaking, the car window was covered in cracks.
They had guns! Charles' eyes narrowed. The windows were bulletproof but wouldn't hold for long.
He ordered Benjamin, "Cover your ears."
Without waiting for a response, Charles reclined the seat, shielding Benjamin with his body.
More gunshots rang out, shattering the window completely. Glass shards flew everywhere. The car shook violently, and the smell of gasoline filled the air.
Another car rammed into them. Benjamin noticed the hand protecting his eyes loosen slightly. His vision cleared, and he saw Nolan's face, filled with urgency.
"Mr. Percy! Watch out!" Nolan's voice rang in his ears, followed by the sound of glass breaking and a gun being fired.
Benjamin turned to look up, but before he could see Charles' face, glass shards flew towards him.
Charles quickly shielded him, and Benjamin heard the sickening sound of something piercing flesh.
Warm liquid dripped onto his face, the smell of gasoline and blood mixing in the air. He reached up to wipe it away, but Charles grabbed his wrist.
"Close your eyes," Charles commanded coldly.
Benjamin didn't listen, his heart pounding. His voice trembled as he clutched Charles' sleeve, "Are you hurt? I heard gunshots."
"No," Charles replied quickly, his voice steady. But his breathing was off.
"Are we being chased?" Benjamin asked.
This was all new to him. Diana had always protected him well, and no matter how mischievous or troublesome he was, he had never encountered anything like this.
He swallowed hard, realizing this was all connected to the Percy family. "Are we going to die here?"
Charles' forehead was covered in sweat, blood flowing from his arm.
He used his uninjured hand to cover Benjamin's eyes. "Close your eyes and cover your ears. Trust me, you won't die with me here."
Charles had plenty of experience with kidnappings and assassination attempts. This was nothing new to him.
Benjamin obeyed, covering his eyes. But the smell of blood was strong, and he couldn't help but ask, "You're bleeding. Are you sure you won't die?"
Charles was silent for a moment, checking the time. "I won't die, unless you keep cursing me."
Despite the situation, Charles managed to joke, which reassured Benjamin a bit. "I'm not cursing you. I'm worried. If you don't appreciate it, I'll shut up."
For some reason, Charles smiled faintly. "Thank you for your concern. I'm fine."
Charles was more worried about Benjamin, the child. What if witnessing such a scene left him with childhood trauma?
After all, it had taken Charles a long time to completely lock away the nightmares from his own childhood.
Suddenly, Benjamin felt a large hand on his head, gently ruffling his hair.
"Don't worry. No one can kill me. We'll get out of this alive. Just keep your eyes closed and don't listen or look."
"Really?" Benjamin's eyes welled up with tears, showing his fear.
"Yes, really." Charles patted his head, soothing him.
He checked the time again and spoke to the men in black, "It's time to act."
