Chapter 62 Illness
Diana felt a wave of relief wash over her when she spotted Robert coming her way. Her body, which had been tense all night, finally started to relax. But just as she was putting on her coat, she blacked out and collapsed. If Robert hadn't been quick on his feet, she would've hit the ground hard.
Nolan caught the whole thing in the rearview mirror and whispered, "Mr. Percy, Ms. Spencer just fainted."
Charles, who had been rubbing his forehead, paused and then said, "Just keep driving." Nolan got the hint and zipped it, raising the partition to give Charles some privacy.
Meanwhile, Robert had already helped Diana into the car. He touched her forehead and realized she was burning up—she had a fever.
Every time Diana hung out with Charles, she ended up feeling like crap. Robert felt pretty helpless but sped up, heading straight for the hospital. On the way, he called Evelyn to come help out. When Evelyn got the call, Isolde was checking onCecil, so they both decided to bring the kids to the hospital.
Diana was lying on the bed, her face pale and her brows furrowed. Robert was talking to the doctor, who said, "Your wife is pregnant. Didn't you know? And you let her wear a short-sleeve shirt in this cold? What kind of husband are you?"
The doctor's words hit Robert like a ton of bricks. He was so shocked he blurted out, "I'm not her husband. Wait, what? She's pregnant?"
The doctor gave Robert a once-over, looking a bit suspicious. It wasn't really the doctor's fault for assuming things; Robert was 47 but looked younger thanks to regular exercise and being single and childless.
Robert usually wore gold-rimmed glasses, giving off a vibe of a successful guy in his thirties. Diana, lying there, was young and beautiful, so the doctor just assumed they were a couple.
"Whether you're her husband or not, she's in the early stages of pregnancy and needs to be handled with care. Her fever isn't too high right now, so try physical cooling first. If that doesn't work, then consider meds. Do you know her family? You should call them." The doctor finished and left after seeing Robert nod.
Robert, holding the report, frowned deeply. He'd known Diana for a while and knew she wasn't the type to sleep around. She was either working or busy fighting with Charles, leaving no time for another guy. So, the most likely father was Charles. The thought made Robert gasp.
If Charles accepted the baby, Diana could use that to get back into the Percy Family. But if he didn't, the baby could be in danger.
For now, it was best to wait for Diana to wake up and hear her out. No matter who the dad was, Diana had the final say on whether to keep the baby.
Robert put the report away and tried to cool Diana down physically. But being a guy, he found it awkward, so he just put a cooling patch on her forehead. When Evelyn and Isolde arrived, Robert felt relieved to leave Diana in their care and kept the news to himself.
Evelyn had whipped up some soup for Diana at home, planning to have it ready for her when she got back. But when she heard Diana was sick, she rushed to the hospital with the soup in tow.
Seeing Diana lying there, pale as a ghost, Evelyn got so worked up she started crying. And Isolde hadn't planned on going to the Spencer Villa today, feeling okay with Cecil being there. But the message from Diana earlier made her uneasy.
Charles had a rep for being cold and ruthless. As his ex-wife, Diana couldn't expect anything good. So, Isolde dropped everything, planning to talk to Diana when she got back. As expected, Diana didn't leave Charles unscathed and ended up in the hospital.
Robert passed on the doctor's instructions to Evelyn. She remembered everything and was way better at taking care of Diana than Robert. Luckily, Diana was pretty tough, and her fever wasn't too bad. By the early morning, her fever had mostly gone down.
Around ten the next morning, Diana slowly woke up. She hadn't been totally out of it, just dizzy and wiped from the night before. She knew Evelyn and Isolde were there but couldn't open her eyes.
Evelyn, who had been by Diana's side all night, was dozing off. Diana, covered in sweat, didn't want to wake her. She sat up quietly, but as soon as she moved, Evelyn woke up, looking at her with sleepy but happy eyes. "Ms. Spencer, you're awake!"
Evelyn stood up and touched Diana's forehead. "Looks like the fever's gone. Thank goodness, Ms. Spencer, you had me so worried!"
Diana smiled and asked, "Did I wear you out?"
Evelyn stomped her foot, pouting and speaking anxiously, "Ms. Spencer, I was so worried about you! I saw them take you away, and when you came back, you were hurt and out cold. I was scared to death!"
"It's okay. I'm fine now," Diana reassured her, but then her stomach growled. She realized she hadn't eaten in over a day. Diana blinked her big eyes and pretended to be pitiful, saying, "Evelyn, I'm starving."
"Robert went to get some food. He should be back soon. I have some soup here; you can have some first." Evelyn quickly heated the soup and brought it to Diana. After Diana drank it, she asked, "Is it good?"
Diana nodded and said honestly, "It's really good."
Evelyn sighed in relief, having worried that the soup might have lost its flavor after being in the fridge overnight. Seeing Diana enjoy it, she felt reassured.
Just as Diana had a few sips of the soup, Robert came back with some light food. Seeing her awake, he felt a bit more at ease. But remembering her pregnancy, he decided to talk about it after she had eaten.
Diana wasn't picky about food. Since Robert didn't know what she liked, he brought a variety. Diana chose a bowl of light porridge and a bit of a sandwich, which eased the pain in her stomach.
By the time she finished eating, it was already 11:30 am. Isolde also arrived with a more substantial lunch. Seeing Diana awake, Isolde put down the food and carefully checked her over. Once she was sure Diana was okay, she asked, "Have you eaten? When did you wake up? Why didn't you tell me?"
Diana replied, "I've eaten. I woke up over an hour ago. Isolde, you don't need to be so worried. I just caught a cold last night and had a bit of a fever."
Isolde pouted, her eyes filled with concern. "A regular fever is one thing, but your message last night scared me. Charles is not a good person. You went out with him; how could I not be worried?"
