Chapter 86 Apology
Charles was flooring it, and in under an hour, he spotted Diana huddling by the roadside near the villa. She was all set for this stakeout, bundled up in warm clothes. She even had a little stool and a lunchbox that Evelyn had packed for her.
The sun was shining bright, but Diana had her face buried in her fluffy collar, dozing off with her head tilted. If she had a tent, Charles might've thought she was on a camping trip.
Traffic around the villa was pretty light, and Diana, who was dozing on her stool, woke up the second she heard an engine. When she saw the familiar silver Maybach, she was a bit thrown off. She had braced herself to wait all day, not expecting Charles to show up so soon.
But the car just cruised past her without stopping. Diana stomped her foot in frustration, convinced Charles had seen her and was just ignoring her on purpose!
The gate recognized Charles's car and slowly opened, and Diana quickly followed.
"Good day, Mr. Percy," the servant at the Percy Mansion greeted Charles but then noticed Diana sneaking in behind the car. He immediately shouted, "Who let you in? Get out of here!"
The security guard came over and lifted Diana out. From start to finish, Diana didn't even get a glimpse of Charles's face.
"Jerk, ignore me?," Diana muttered, kicking the stone pillar at the door before plopping back down on her stool. She shoved her hands in her pockets and continued soaking up the sun.
Jacob didn't expect Charles to come back so suddenly, but remembering the phone call earlier, he had a hunch. "Mr. Percy, do you need anything? Hungry? I can have the kitchen whip something up."
Charles tossed his coat on the sofa and said, "No need," before heading upstairs.
His room had a view of the villa entrance, and when he saw Diana sitting back in her spot, he felt a surge of frustration. 'Diana! Is this how you ask for help? I came home just to give you a chance, but you don't seem to appreciate it at all.'
Feeling bored, Diana opened the lunchbox and took out the small bread Evelyn had baked for her. Though small, each piece was soft, delicious, and full of a milky aroma.
Seeing Diana start eating, Charles nearly yanked the curtains down in anger. He quickly drew the curtains. Out of sight, out of mind.
Downstairs, Jacob suddenly told the security guard, "Mr. Percy's car needs maintenance, take it now."
Charles didn't have a full-time driver; most of the time, either Nolan or he himself drove. The villa's car maintenance was generally handled by the security guard.
The security guard was puzzled by the sudden call, as the car wasn't due for maintenance for another half month. 'Why the rush now?'
But seeing Jacob urging him, he scratched his head and agreed, "Alright, open the gate for me then."
Diana, munching on her bread, heard the engine again and thought Charles was leaving, so she stood up to look. The security guard, seeing she hadn't left, was surprised and stuck his head out of the car window, "Why are you still here? Mr. Percy won't see you. You should leave. If you can't get a ride, I can give you a lift."
Diana, seeing it wasn't Charles, waved her hand. "No, thank you."
The security guard, seeing her refusal, didn't say more. He closed the window and drove off for the car maintenance, muttering, "Mr. Percy is really unlucky, being pestered by someone who brings misfortune wherever she goes. Having a pretty wife is useless; she needs to be obedient too."
Diana didn't catch what the guard said, just kept waiting, but noticed the gate behind her hadn't closed. 'No other Percy Family servants around; did they forget to close the gate?'
She didn't make a fuss; this was her chance. So, she cautiously entered the villa, her eyes alertly scanning the surroundings.
Passing through the hallway, she heard Jacob scolding someone in the kitchen, realizing the servants had all been called away. Feeling more at ease, Diana relaxed a bit.
This was her first time back at the Percy Mansion since the divorce, and memories of her miserable state when she was just reborn flooded back. She hesitated about going up, but remembering the Spencer Group couldn't hold on for a few more days, Diana followed her memory to Charles's bedroom door.
Inside, Charles opened the curtains again to check, only to find the villa entrance empty, with just Diana's small stool left. Frowning, he turned to go downstairs to check.
Diana didn't expect Charles to suddenly open the door; she had been leaning against it, listening. She lost her balance and fell in.
Charles didn't see anything clearly before being knocked to the ground by her. His head hit the floor hard, but luckily there was a carpet to cushion him. No concussion, but he was a bit dazed.
The first thing he smelled was the sweet aroma of the bread, and then he saw the person pressing on him. Gritting his teeth, he said, "Diana!"
Diana realized the situation and awkwardly raised a hand. "Hi, Mr. Percy, nice weather today." She quickly got up, seeing Charles's face darkening. "Sorry, Mr. Percy, I didn't mean to. I came to apologize, I am really sorry!"
Diana bowed deeply, her attitude very sincere. But her words were repetitive, just "sorry," without any specifics.
Charles propped himself up, standing in front of Diana. With her head lowered, Diana looked even more petite before his tall figure.
The room was lit, and Diana stood in his shadow, feeling immense pressure. Charles asked, "Who let you in?"
Diana swallowed and replied, "I climbed over the wall." She didn't want to lie but didn't want to cause anyone to lose their job because of her.
Charles reached out his large hand, touching her neck, feeling the warm, soft skin under Diana's neck, the blood flowing beneath.
Diana stood still, trembling uncontrollably, a residual effect of being choked multiple times. If Charles had acted directly, it would have been better; this slow and torturous behavior was the most frightening.
Charles's thumb moved slightly, pressing against Diana's chin, forcing her to look up. Diana frowned slightly, her face tense. She kept encouraging herself, 'Don't be afraid. It's not the first time. It's no big deal.'
Thinking this, she felt her expression relax a bit, looking directly into Charles's eyes.
That same expression, pure and soft, as if she would break with a touch. But her eyes were exceptionally bright, looking back at him without any avoidance.
Charles's Adam's apple moved, feeling a bit tight inside. His hand moved from Diana's neck to her cheek. Diana was very puzzled, 'What is he doing? Is he going to twist my head off?'
She tilted her head slightly, pressing against Charles's hand, glancing down involuntarily. From Charles's angle, he could see her long eyelashes fluttering twice. She rarely behaved so obediently.
