Chapter 528 Pretending to be Pitiful
Eugene gave a slight smile, like a teacher giving a lecture, and broke it down for him.
"You were too pushy before. Try being gentler, listen to her more, and maybe act a little vulnerable. If your personalities mesh well, she might forgive you."
"Act vulnerable?" Charles' mouth twitched, almost thinking he had misheard.
"Yeah, trust me, it works. Think about it, with your cold demeanor, who'd want to be your wife?"
Eugene was confident, showing Charles photos on his phone with various girls to convince him, "I'm pretty popular with the ladies, believe me, I wouldn't lie to you."
Charles stayed silent. He wasn't sure if Eugene was reliable, but he was certain Eugene was a playboy.
Seeing no response, Eugene continued, "You don't have any other options right now, trust me this once."
Eugene had suggested this method to Charles before, but Charles had been too stubborn to listen.
Now, with his memory loss, it was the perfect time to get him to comply.
Charles bit his lip instinctively, hesitating whether to follow Eugene's advice.
"You don't have to listen to me, but with your brain, you won't come up with anything better."
Eugene leaned back, hands behind his head, looking unconcerned.
"Actually, I think it's better if you two stay apart. You don't remember anything now, at least you won't be sad anymore. If you separate, Diana can be free sooner..."
"No way!"
Before Eugene could finish, Charles interrupted him sharply, "We can't separate."
Though he didn't remember, his subconscious told him he would regret it if they did.
"Then listen to me, I'm the Chief!"
Eugene dropped his smile, speaking seriously.
This time, Charles didn't respond, just closed his eyes in silence. It seemed simple, but for him, it was incredibly difficult.
He only knew how to show weakness when his mom was around, but that was before he turned seven…
Eugene knew what he was thinking and reassured him, "It's okay, there's nothing shameful about it. You're only seventeen now, Diana doesn't know what you were like at seventeen. For your wife, it's worth it."
He checked the time and added, "They'll be here in an hour, let's see how you do."
Sure enough, an hour later, there was a knock on the hospital room door.
Diana entered first, her coat draped over her arm. She barely acknowledged Eugene with a nod.
Nolan followed, looking a bit nervous, as if Diana had threatened him.
"I took him for tests. The doctor said it's retrograde amnesia, and whether he'll recover is uncertain."
Eugene handed Diana the test results.
It showed Charles' brain CT and the doctor's diagnosis.
Diana frowned at it briefly, then set it aside and asked Charles, "How do you feel now? Still can't remember anything?"
Charles shook his head. His mind was still blank, only recalling events before his kidnapping.
Nolan stood by, wanting to say something but fearing Diana's reaction, he stayed silent, pretending to be a plant.
"Don't worry, the doctor said it won't come back in a day or two. Diana, maybe you should help Charles remember the good times once he's discharged?"
Eugene suggested with a teasing grin. "Like, recreate some scenes."
"You can recreate scenes with him," Diana shot back, rolling her eyes.
Since taking over Charles' position, she realized being a CEO wasn't easy.
Especially with Zachary constantly eyeing her position, she had no time to accompany Charles.
Eugene quickly waved his hands, "We don't have any memorable moments, I can't help."
"Ms. Spencer, you have the deepest connection with Mr. Percy here. No one else can help him but you. Ms. Spencer, please be kind."
Nolan couldn't hold back, clasping his hands in a prayer gesture towards Diana.
Diana was about to lose her temper when she felt a hand tugging at her coat.
She paused and saw Charles, his eyelashes lowered, sunlight casting a small shadow on his face, making him look particularly obedient.
"Please, help me, I really want to remember," he said softly, his tone almost embarrassed.
Charles pursed his lips, his ears turning red, not daring to look at Diana.
The room fell silent.
Nolan was stunned, unable to believe his boss Charles had acted like that.
Eugene bit his hand, trying not to laugh, almost choking.
Diana's expression was serious. She reached out to check Charles' forehead, confirming his temperature was normal before speaking.
"Eugene, are you sure he's just lost his memory and didn't damage his brain?"
Eugene stifled his laughter, quickly becoming serious, "Don't say that, he's only seventeen. He's still a kid, and kids ask adults for help like this."
Charles closed his eyes, wishing he could throw Eugene out.
It was all his bad idea, now Diana thought he was brain-damaged instead of winning her back.
Diana frowned, deep in thought.
To her, seventeen was almost an adult, especially Charles at seventeen, who should be more mature.
But she didn't know what he was like at that age.
Charles, like a prisoner awaiting judgment, saw her not responding and was about to withdraw his hand.
The next moment, Diana held his hand. Her hand was much smaller but warm and soft, gripping his tightly.
"Don't worry, I'll help you," she said finally, convincing herself to believe Eugene's advice, not judging Charles' seventeen-year-old self by her subjective thoughts.
Charles' heart moved, instinctively gripping her hand back, stammering, "Thank you."
This time it wasn't an act, but his genuine reaction.
Diana suddenly laughed, finding his behavior amusing, and ruffled his hair like petting a large dog, "You're welcome, you saved my life, this is my repayment."
Eugene watched their warm interaction, forgetting to take credit, and kicked Nolan, signaling him to leave the room for them.
"Mr. Bailey, what's going on? Am I dreaming? Mr. Percy seems weird, and Ms. Spencer too. She said she'd leave once he woke up, but now she's staying?"
Nolan was puzzled, asking eagerly as soon as they stepped out.
