Chapter 230 Showing Vulnerability
Charles's grip on the document tightened without him even realizing it, and he found himself drifting off into his thoughts.
He remembered his mom, Cecilia Thorne, who was always so gentle.
Cecilia was James's first love. They were together for years, but in the end, James married Elise.
Cecilia didn't abort him and raised him alone until he was seven. In his memories, Cecilia was a gentle but strong woman.
But after she passed away, Charles went back to the Percy family.
As an illegitimate child, everyone watched him like hawks, and he had to build walls around himself, forgetting how to be gentle with people.
Even though he was killing it in business, Charles still hadn't figured out the whole love thing.
But now that he knew how he felt, he figured he should be more understanding.
Thinking this, Charles opened the drawer and pulled out a gift box.
Nolan, with his eagle eyes, immediately recognized it as the box with "Eternity." Looked like the necklace was getting gifted today.
"Nolan, you..." Charles started to hand over the box, but then pulled it back just as Nolan was about to take it.
Nolan was confused.
"There's a Richardson family gathering tomorrow. I'll take Diana with me," he said, changing the subject without a hint of emotion.
Worried about a repeat of last time, he added, "Make sure she knows what's up."
Nolan's face got serious. Last time was a fluke; this time, he wouldn't mess up. "Got it, Mr. Percy. I'll make sure it's done!"
Seeing Charles still holding "Eternity," Nolan hesitated and asked, "Mr. Percy, is this for Ms. Spencer?"
Since Diana was going to the party, the necklace had to be for her.
And before the event, she'd need to go to Amelia's for styling. If there were specific accessories, they should be sent over early for matching.
But Charles's face didn't change as he put the necklace away. "None of your business."
Sensing the shift in Charles's mood, Nolan didn't dare say more and lowered his head to apologize.
Tomorrow was Vance's birthday, and the party was also to show off the "results" of their recent collaboration.
Charles hadn't seen Billy in a while, a young guy who had the guts to brag in front of him.
Tomorrow, he'd go to the party with Diana to show Billy who the real winner was.
In the pet park in the northern part of Evergreen City.
Diana was holding a yellow duck toy, squatting in front of Snowy to play with it.
The duck toy was a bit worn out, but it squeaked when squeezed, which Snowy loved.
Right now, Snowy was nudging Diana's hand with its wet nose, wanting her to throw the toy again.
But she was a bit tired, so she handed the game over to Evelyn.
Diana came to the pet park today not to play, but to help Snowy get used to Billy.
Even though he agreed to adopt Snowy, Diana still hoped they'd get along well, not just for her sake.
They'd been playing for half an hour, but there was no sign of Billy.
Diana wiped the sweat from her forehead and was about to check the time.
Suddenly, a gentle male voice came from behind. "Diana."
She turned to see Billy, who looked like he'd lost some weight, his jawline sharper.
His previously slightly curly brown hair was now neatly groomed, giving him a more mature look.
But the moment he saw Diana, his serious expression softened immediately.
His rosy lips curved into a joyful smile, revealing a tiny mole at the corner of his mouth, making him seem incredibly approachable.
Diana squinted; she had just thought Billy had changed.
But his bright, dog-like eyes were still the same as before.
If Billy had a tail, it would probably be wagging furiously right now.
"You're just in time. Snowy just went to play with Evelyn over there. I'll take you to see it."
Since it was about adoption, Diana got straight to the point without any small talk.
Seeing her show no concern for him, Billy's eyes turned resentful, and he tugged at Diana's arm with one hand.
"It's been so long, Diana, and you don't even care about me."
His tone seemed to complain, but it actually carried a hint of seeking attention.
If Vance saw this, he would probably take him to see a psychiatrist on the spot.
But coincidentally, Diana fell for this.
Back in the Sword of Damocles, Dean had deeply understood that she would never yield to a tough attitude but was easily swayed by kind words.
Because of Diana's status and strength, many people wanted to challenge her.
Inevitably, there were many unpleasant provocations.
Diana accepted them all, ultimately defeating those people mercilessly.
But when the younger members of the Sword of Damocles affectionately called her and wanted to challenge her, Diana became kind and even gave them gifts.
This made Dean, who had been defeated by her, cry out in unfairness.
Diana didn't care; the Sword of Damocles never lacked geniuses.
These little geniuses spoke nicely and occasionally gave her gifts.
What was their fault? They just wanted to play with her.
It was the same now. What was Billy's fault? He was just a bit aggrieved after not seeing her for a long time.
Therefore, those who knew how to show weakness could easily gain favor.
After he said this, Diana immediately felt guilty and couldn't help but comfort him, "Sorry, it's my fault. You look thinner. Work is busy, but you should still eat well and take care of yourself."
Although her words were very polite, because it was Diana who said them, Billy's eyes lit up again.
He immediately forgave her and responded smoothly, "I understand. Thank you for your concern, Diana."
The two exchanged smiles, and the atmosphere lightened.
At this moment, Snowy came back with the duck toy in its mouth.
It placed the duck toy at Diana's feet and then sat down obediently, barking twice as if seeking praise.
It was rewarded with a pat on the head from Diana.
She added, "This is the dog I found. It's said to be a Husky. I named it Snowy. It's very smart."
Billy's gaze fell on the dog. It was less than a year old, small in size. But its series of actions just now fully demonstrated its intelligence.
"It is indeed very smart," Billy affirmed, then squatted down to rub Snowy's head.
Perhaps because Billy had owned dogs before, Snowy wasn't afraid at all during their first close encounter.
It had howled at Charles last time.
Feeling the fluffy touch in his palm, Billy found his opinion of the dog changed a lot.
Initially, he just wanted to go along with Diana's wishes and adopt it.
But now, he genuinely liked it.
"Ms. Spencer, Snowy runs too fast. I couldn't catch up at all." Evelyn emerged from the grass on the right, panting and complaining.
But when she stood still and saw Billy next to Diana, her expression changed instantly. She hesitated and said, "Mr. Richardson!"
Billy's attention was all on the dog. Hearing her tone, he didn't think much of it.
He just smiled and greeted her before continuing to play with Snowy.
But the next second, Evelyn waved at Diana.
Diana raised an eyebrow. It was rare to see Evelyn like this, so she probably had something to say.
