Chapter 258 He Did It On Purpose
Charles chuckled softly, picking up a piece of food and popping it into his mouth.
After chewing and swallowing, he commented, "This is pretty good."
Diana rolled her eyes, clearly annoyed, and turned to leave.
"Hey, come back and stay with me until I finish eating," Charles called out. When Diana didn't stop, he added, "Has Evelyn eaten yet?"
Diana paused, clenching her fists before turning back with a forced smile. "Seems like Mr. Percy's meal is more important."
She sat back down on the couch, crossing her arms and watching Charles eat.
'Diana, don't get mad. It's not worth it. Just imagine he's a prisoner and you're the guard. You're just supervising him.' Diana kept reassuring herself, and her mood gradually calmed down.
Charles ate with such elegance, his good looks making even a simple meal seem like a Michelin-starred experience.
One ate while the other watched, and the office was unusually quiet.
Diana leaned back on the couch, starting to feel drowsy. She yawned, trying to stay awake, but her eyelids grew heavier and heavier.
By the time Charles finished eating and looked up, she was already asleep.
He raised an eyebrow but didn't wake her. Instead, he gently removed her shoes and laid her down on the couch.
Diana only furrowed her brows slightly, quickly finding a comfortable position and falling into a deep sleep.
Even though the office was warm, Charles still took off his jacket and draped it over her.
He tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear, his hand lingering on her face, feeling a softness in his heart.
Charles returned to his desk, where he could see Diana with just a glance.
He picked up his phone and sent a message to Nolan: [Cancel all my afternoon meetings. No one is allowed to come into my office.]
Nolan saw the message and, though puzzled, quickly replied: [Got it.]
He immediately went to notify everyone, especially making sure Claire wouldn't disturb them.
Even though the meetings were canceled, Charles still had a pile of documents to handle.
He refocused on his work, occasionally glancing at Diana as a break.
It wasn't until after five in the afternoon that Diana slowly woke up.
In the short winter days, it was already dark outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, and the city lights illuminated the office.
The dim light made Diana rub her eyes, taking a moment to realize she had fallen asleep in Charles's office.
She sat up and stretched, causing the jacket covering her to fall to the floor.
Diana instinctively reached to pick it up, realizing it was a man's jacket.
She looked up to see Charles behind his desk, wearing glasses and staring at his computer screen with a calm expression.
The screen's light highlighted his handsome face in the dim room.
Diana, now well-rested and calmer, found herself momentarily dazed by his looks.
When Charles looked up again, he saw her staring blankly at him.
"Awake?" he asked.
Diana snapped out of it, frowning. "Why didn't you turn on the lights?"
Charles paused, then pressed a button beside him.
The sudden brightness of the fluorescent lights almost blinded Diana, making her yelp and cover her eyes until she adjusted.
Charles, having stared at the computer screen for so long, wasn't affected. Seeing her reaction, he said, "Lights are on now."
But a closer look revealed a playful smile at the corner of his mouth, clearly intentional.
Diana squinted, about to scold him, but her stomach growled loudly.
The sound was particularly noticeable in the quiet office.
Feeling embarrassed, Diana turned her face away, hearing Charles's soft chuckle.
She gritted her teeth, unable to hold back her anger. "What's so funny? Why didn't you wake me up after you finished eating?"
Charles didn't answer her question. Instead, he stood up, picked up his coat, and said, "Let's go eat."
Diana wanted to refuse, but she had left in a hurry and didn't bring any money. If she went back now, she might faint from hunger on the way.
Since it was Charles's money, she decided to spend it lavishly.
With that thought, she stood up with a cold snort. "I want the most expensive meal."
Charles nodded slightly, not taking her words to heart.
He chose a high-end restaurant near the Percy Group. The place had a nice ambiance, especially in the evening.
At this hour, the restaurant wasn't crowded. A violinist played in the center, the music soothing and calming.
The waiter led them to a table by the window, offering a view of Evergreen City's nightscape.
Charles handed her the menu, nodding for her to order.
Diana raised an eyebrow and glanced at the menu.
The prices were steep, and she ordered several dishes without hesitation.
After finishing, she closed the menu and pushed it back. "That's it."
Charles watched her order enough food for three people without interrupting. Once she was done, he had the waiter remove a few items.
"Just these," he said, closing the menu with a serious look.
Diana propped her chin on her hand, gazing out the window. The neon lights cast colorful shadows on her face.
When she was silent, her eyes seemed much softer than usual.
But the peaceful scene didn't last long. Diana soon felt his gaze and glared back. "What are you looking at?"
Charles's eyes remained calm as he looked away, taking a sip of water.
Suddenly, a commotion erupted behind him.
Diana looked over, her eyes widening in surprise.
It was Billy and Vance.
They were sitting across from a father and daughter. The woman, around thirty, wore a burgundy dress, looking elegant and seductive.
But her expression was sour. Whatever Billy had said to her clearly struck a nerve; she was frozen in place, her face as white as a sheet.
The next moment, she threw a glass of water in Billy's face.
Water dripped down his cheeks, soaking his shirt.
The woman stood up, storming out in anger.
The middle-aged man beside her snorted coldly. "Your son is really something."
Though the restaurant wasn't crowded, the scene drew a lot of attention.
Billy hung his head, his expression unreadable.
Vance tried to apologize, but the man brushed him off.
Vance's face turned grim, caught in an awkward situation.
He lowered his voice, scolding Billy, "You idiot, are you trying to ruin the Richardson family?"
Since the birthday party fiasco, their partnership with the Percy Group had completely fallen apart, replaced by severe suppression.
Vance, not skilled in business, desperately tried to form alliances with other wealthy families, hoping for a marriage to save the Richardson family.
But Billy kept refusing, and now he had angered another potential ally.
