Chapter 284 The New Butler

Even though Diana was ready to be discharged, she still felt weak. Brenda insisted she stay in the hospital for two more days for observation.

Finally, on the third day, she returned to The Percy Mansion.

God, those days in the hospital were so boring. She had left her phone at home and couldn't contact anyone.

Every time she opened her eyes, she saw Charles' poker face, which made her inexplicably angry.

When she got back to The Percy Mansion, Evelyn had been standing at the door, crying for quite a while.

Her eyes were red, and the moment she saw Diana, she couldn't hold back and started crying loudly.

"Ms. Spencer!"

Diana pulled Evelyn into a hug, gently patting her back to comfort her.

"I'm fine, don't cry. If you keep crying, your eyes will get all puffy."

Evelyn had been out of sorts since returning from the food festival. The explosion there had caused quite a commotion.

She couldn't get through to Diana on the phone and had no idea what had happened to her.

In the end, it was Sabrina who brought her back to The Percy Mansion.

Jacob had told her that Charles had brought Diana back, which made her feel relieved.

But the next day, both of them went to the hospital, and she didn't know the details. She wanted to go to the hospital to accompany Diana but was refused.

Evelyn had been praying that nothing bad would happen. Finally, today, seeing Diana standing in front of her, healthy and safe, the weight on her heart was lifted.

She rubbed her eyes and whispered, "Ms. Spencer, what happened? I couldn't reach you."

Diana patted her head and didn't tell her the truth.

"I went to the hospital for a prenatal checkup. The baby is healthy."

"Really?" Evelyn was skeptical.

"Really." Diana nodded.

Behind them, Charles walked over, interrupting their conversation.

"Take Diana upstairs to rest."

Evelyn lowered her head, not daring to look at him. She just nodded and helped Diana to her room.

Downstairs, Charles looked around but didn't see Jacob. He turned to the maid next to him and asked, "Where's Jacob?"

The maid, Tessa, was caught off guard by the question. She paused for a moment before replying, "Jacob is sick. He should have informed you, Mr. Percy."

Charles frowned slightly and casually checked his phone. He hadn't been paying attention to other messages while at the hospital.

He scrolled to the bottom and finally saw Jacob's sick leave message.

He put away his phone and asked, "Who's in charge now?"

Tessa, with her head down, answered truthfully, "Jacob said he would still manage things remotely online since he's sick and can't move around."

Jacob had been working for the Percy family for decades and was almost 60 years old.

He should have retired by now, but he couldn't bear to leave the Percy family, so he kept working.

The large mansion usually only had Charles, so it was easy to manage.

Now that Jacob was sick, Charles uncharacteristically said, "Let him rest and recover."

He then looked Tessa up and down and asked, "Are you familiar with the house's affairs?"

Tessa blinked, realizing this was an opportunity.

She quickly replied, "Yes, I'm familiar. There aren't many people in the house, and nothing too complicated. I also have a nutritionist and childcare certification, so I can take care of Ms. Spencer."

"No need for that. You'll be the acting housekeeper for now. No one is allowed to see her, and she can't go out. Got it?"

Charles checked the time. He needed to head to the Percy Group.

The only thing he was worried about was Diana. If she went out and met someone, it would cause trouble again.

Now he was like a dog with a bone, unwilling to eat it but also unwilling to let it go.

Hearing his words, Tessa felt a surge of confusion.

Not letting her go out or see anyone? Wasn't that basically house arrest?

Did Diana do something to make Charles angry again?

While she was guessing, she nodded in agreement.

Charles, having arranged everything, left for the Percy Group.

As soon as he left, a group of servants gathered around, congratulating Tessa.

"Tessa, you're so lucky to become the acting housekeeper!"

"Yeah, with Jacob getting older, if you manage well during this time, you might take over permanently. Don't forget about us then."

Some were flattering, some were jealous, but they all kept a friendly face.

Tessa, basking in their praise, felt her confidence grow.

Now that she was in charge, she could do things her way.

She had observed a lot during her time at The Percy Mansion.

Charles, though cold, wasn't a meddlesome person. As long as you didn't get in his way and did your job, you could get good rewards.

And he was young, successful, handsome, and wealthy—a dream man for many women.

Too bad he was entangled with Diana. Her family wasn't much, just a fallen rich second generation. She was only at The Percy Mansion because of the baby.

Charles was really unlucky!

Thinking this, Tessa's resentment towards Diana deepened.

So, when Diana came downstairs for dinner that evening, Tessa laid down the rules.

"Ms. Spencer, I'll be the acting housekeeper from now on. According to Mr. Percy's orders, you must stay at home and not see anyone."

"Also, to ensure you get enough exercise, you'll work with the servants. And Evelyn must cooperate with the others. If you have any complaints, you can bring them to me, and I'll report to Mr. Percy."

Tessa rattled off a long list, essentially saying Diana's status had dropped significantly. She had no freedom and had to work.

Before Diana could speak, Bronte, another servant, spoke up, "Tessa, that's not right. Ms. Spencer is pregnant and needs to rest. How can you make her work?"

Tessa rolled her eyes. She never liked Bronte. They did the same job, but Bronte, being older, always criticized her.

"Bronte, Mr. Percy put me in charge. If you have a problem, take it up with him."

Diana, who had been eating, showed no change in expression. Charles was crazy, so this decision was very reasonable.

She even found some dark humor in it, thinking at least she wasn't tied to him 24/7. That would be suffocating.

"I understand. Anything else?"

Diana's tone was calm as she gently patted Evelyn's back to comfort her.

Tessa, surprised by her acceptance, felt a bit smug. She cleared her throat and said, "That's all for now. If Mr. Percy has any other instructions, I'll let you know."

Diana nodded and said nothing more.

After dinner, Evelyn went back to the attic, leaving Diana alone upstairs.

She returned to her room, where the sheets and blankets were new and smelled faintly of lavender.

Diana sat on the bed, yawning, and logged into the Dark Web on her tablet to call Dean.
