Chapter 210 Too many surprises
Diana frowned and tried to yank her hand free. "What are you doing?"
Charles reluctantly let go, his fingers brushing hers lightly. "You lied to Jacob, saying you reported to me, and then you came here. Still trying to play innocent?"
Diana's eyes widened, her voice rising. "What did I lie about?"
Remembering a woman answered the phone that day, Diana shot back, "It was clearly you that day..."
She suddenly paused, her expression shifting.
Charles frowned. "What about me?"
"Nothing, it was Jacob who called you that day. Check the call records if you don't believe me."
She didn't want to explain, knowing Charles would just think she still liked him and came to Sunset Hamlet out of jealousy.
Charles tightened his grip on her wrist, making her wince. "What do you want?"
Charles pursed his lips, not even sure why he was so mad. The truth didn't matter anymore; just seeing Diana's dismissive attitude made him want to grab her and teach her a harsh lesson.
Diana stiffened, trying to pull away, and they were at a stalemate.
Suddenly, Kennedy walked over with two plates of side dishes. "There you are! Come and eat. I made oatmeal porridge; it's delicious."
Taking advantage of Charles turning his head, Diana forcefully yanked her wrist free. "No, thank you. I'm not hungry."
As soon as she said that, her stomach growled. Both of them looked at her stomach, and Diana blushed.
She was pregnant and got hungry quickly. Claiming she wasn't hungry only to be betrayed by her stomach made the situation awkward.
Kennedy laughed and put the dishes on the table. "No need to be polite. Dig in."
She went back to the kitchen and brought out two bowls of oatmeal porridge. The living room filled with a fragrant aroma.
Diana swallowed, thinking she might as well eat since she was already embarrassed. She had experienced Kennedy's cooking and knew it was good.
Seeing Charles still standing, Kennedy waved him over. "Charles, you should eat too. You need to regain your strength after that fever."
Diana, enjoying the food, looked up and answered for him. "He won't eat."
But the next second, Charles sat across from her, holding a spoon. He slowly scooped some oatmeal porridge, making it look like a gourmet dish with his handsome demeanor.
A spoonful of porridge went down his throat, warming his stomach. "It's delicious, thank you."
His voice was low as he complimented the porridge and continued eating.
Kennedy, happy with the praise, shyly said, "Thank you."
Seeing Kennedy go back to the kitchen, Diana couldn't help but speak. "Mr. Percy, who grew up with a silver spoon, how could you like this kind of food?"
Charles blew on his porridge, looked up at her, and shot back, "I remember the Spencer family isn't lacking either. If you can eat it, why can't I?"
Diana rolled her eyes, not wanting to argue, and picked up her utensils to grab a piece of chicken. Just as she lifted it, Charles snatched it away.
He stuffed the chicken into his mouth, chewing with his cheeks puffed out like a chipmunk.
His eyes were daring her, like saying, "I did it, what are you gonna do about it?"
Diana clenched her fist, deciding not to bother with him, and went for some vegetables instead.
Charles immediately followed suit, and the poor vegetable got split between them.
Diana bit into her half aggressively, imagining it was Charles.
After finishing, she couldn't help but snap, "What are you doing! Why do you have to take mine!"
Seeing her lose her cool, Charles couldn't help but laugh.
This time, he didn't hold back; even his shoulders were shaking.
For a long time, Charles had been eating alone.
When he was young, his mom would "fight for food" with him. Being a kid, he often lost, and his mom would laugh heartily.
Back then, he didn't get what was so fun about it.
After returning to the Percy family, he realized how precious those times were.
Now, sharing a meal with Diana, he felt an unexpected sense of belonging, a feeling of "home."
"Crazy," Diana muttered, baffled by his laughter.
But taking advantage of the moment, she quickly filled her bowl with food.
With the food in her bowl, if Charles tried to take it, she would dump it all on his head.
At this moment, Charles stopped laughing. When he looked up, Diana was still guarding her bowl, looking wary.
This time, he didn't take her food, but there was a faint smile at the corners of his eyes as he continued to enjoy his oatmeal.
Kennedy came out of the kitchen, holding a pot. "Does anyone want more?"
Diana raised her hand, indicating she wanted more. The bowl of oatmeal porridge wasn't much, and she wasn't satisfied yet.
Kennedy smiled and gave her another scoop, then pushed it towards Charles. "Charles, you have some more too. Men always have bigger appetites."
Charles nodded slightly. He hadn't eaten for over ten hours and was indeed very hungry.
After serving both of them, Kennedy filled a big bowl for herself and sat down next to Charles, eating with gusto.
Diana looked up and noticed Charles' body stiffen.
She couldn't help but feel a bit of schadenfreude, but he only paused for a moment before continuing his meal calmly.
Diana, however, was taken aback. Tonight, Charles had given her too many surprises.
If it weren't for the red marks on her wrist, Diana would have doubted if the person in front of her was really Charles.
Charles spent his days living in the orphanage, eating home-cooked food, and dining with strangers.
If Nolan were here to see this scene, he'd probably be just as shocked.
Kennedy ate and chatted, "I've been at Rainbow Orphanage for over fifty years, and today is the happiest day of my life. I never thought Evelyn would bring such a big group of friends back. The children are happy, and so am I."
Hearing this, Diana couldn't help but ask, "Ms. Hope, you've never left Rainbow Orphanage. What about your husband? Your children?"
Kennedy shook her head, her eyes full of emotion. "I never married. I was supposed to, but the man wanted me to leave Rainbow Orphanage, and I couldn't do it. I was abandoned at the doorstep of Rainbow Orphanage at birth, and have lived here ever since. I should give back by raising children like me. It makes me very happy."
"Rainbow Orphanage is wonderful, and the children are well taken care of by you. Ms. Hope, you are truly great." Diana sincerely praised, feeling willing to donate to such an orphanage.
Kennedy shook her head at this. "Actually, Rainbow Orphanage wasn't always this good. There used to be others taking care of the children. When there are more people, conflicts arise. In recent years, with no benefits to gain, people left, and I found some peace."
