Chapter 44 Take Home
The moment he brought up Matthew, Diana lost it and started ranting.
"Wasn't it you who handed me over to Mr. Moore? Yeah, so what if I hit him? If someone had a knife to your throat, wouldn't you fight back? I'm the victim here, and you made me kneel for three days and nights. Have you forgotten?" Diana shot back, her voice full of fire.
Eugene glanced at Charles, thinking, 'Yep, this is classic Charles—sneaky and ruthless.'
Charles was taken aback by Diana's outburst but quickly pointed to Finnian, who was lying nearby. "And what about him? Do you know what kind of business his family is in? You've jeopardized my collaboration," he said coldly. The dim lighting made it hard for Diana to tell if he was genuinely pissed.
Diana replied cautiously, "Mr. Percy, whether I came today or not, your partner would have been beaten. Ms. Porter is reasonable person. Once she takes over the company, the Percy Group can continue negotiating with her." Her tone was calm but firm, hiding her own involvement.
Seeing Charles stay silent, Diana added, "Mr. Percy, my friend is in a bad mood right now. If there's nothing else, I'll be leaving." With that, she turned and bolted.
Once she was out and sure no one was following, she let out a long sigh of relief. She replayed the scene in her head. 'Was I polite enough? Did I keep enough distance? If Charles still sees me the same way, there's nothing I can do about it.' Shaking her head, she brushed off the incident and went to find Isolde.
Isolde's eyes were red; she had just picked up her child, Cecil Davis. She sat dejectedly at the entrance of Mirage Nights Club.
Diana walked up and put a hand on her shoulder, comforting her, "Congrats on starting a new chapter in your life. Don't be sad."
Cecil, oblivious to the drama, kept playing with Isolde's hair. Diana took Cecil into her arms to give Isolde a moment to calm down.
Isolde, no longer the fierce woman she was earlier, hugged her knees and looked utterly miserable. "When we were dating, he said he'd love me forever. He even left his hometown to settle in my city. I felt sorry for him, so I let him manage the company and even let his parents move in. But why did he treat me like this?" Isolde buried her head in her knees, crying bitterly.
Diana sighed. Men were born actors. Luckily, Isolde cut her losses in time; otherwise, she would have ended up like Bianca.
Diana patted her back and comforted her, "Cecil will thank you in the future. Do you know why I helped you today?"
Isolde paused, her voice muffled. "Because you're a good person."
Diana smiled, "I wouldn't say I'm a good person. When I saw you today, I saw my mom. She was also blinded by a man when she was young. My dad cheated on her, took her inheritance with his mistress. Now, even though I've managed to take everything back, they still eye me covetously, waiting for me to fall so they can reap the benefits."
Isolde looked up, surprised that Diana had shared her family story so easily. A sense of camaraderie welled up in her heart, and she held Diana's hand, feeling empowered. "You're right. If I don't break this off, Cecil won't have a good life at home if I die. I can't..." Isolde stopped herself, realizing her next words might hurt Diana.
But Diana picked up where Isolde left off, "For Cecil's sake, you need to pull yourself together and kick those bastards out. Don't follow my mom's path, and don't let Cecil become like me." After saying this, Diana felt a pang in her chest, and tears welled up in her eyes. These were the emotions of the original Diana.
Seeing this, Isolde wiped her tears and hugged Diana. The two women found comfort in each other under the night sky. After getting through this rough patch, they both looked forward to a fresh start.
Back at the Spencer Villa, Robert and Evelyn had waited so long that the food had gone cold, and there was still no sign of Diana. They had sent messages but got no reply, thinking Charles had detained Diana again. They were anxiously pacing around the house.
It wasn't until after 8 p.m. that Diana finally walked through the door, with Isolde in tow. Originally, Diana had planned to take Isolde home, but after the incident with Finnian, she knew she couldn't hide it from Finnian's parents and feared they might harm Isolde. So, she brought her home instead.
"This is my friend, Isolde Porter. She'll be staying here for a while. This is Evelyn Thomas. If you need anything or want to eat something, you can ask her. This is Robert Davis. If you don't have a suitable lawyer, you can consider him," Diana introduced them.
Isolde shyly smiled and greeted them. Evelyn, seeing the sleepy child in her arms, reached out to take him and said, "Ms. Spencer, you all go ahead and eat. I've reheated the food. I'll play with the child for a while."
Isolde was initially worried, but Diana nodded at her, signaling it was okay.
At the dinner table, Isolde had little appetite but forced herself to eat more for Cecil's sake. Diana handed her a bowl of soup and said, "If you're tired, take a few days to rest. I'll go with you when you're ready."
Isolde took the soup and whispered, "Thank you. But I can't rest. The sooner I divorce him, the less trouble there will be. I'm afraid he's already transferring assets."
Robert, always interested in divorce cases involving asset disputes, chimed in, "Ms. Porter, can you briefly explain your situation? Maybe I can help."
Isolde briefly explained her situation. After listening, Robert's expression remained calm. He suddenly understood why Diana was helping Isolde. Isolde's situation was very similar to Bianca's, but she was much luckier.
Isolde's family had been very foresighted. Before Finnian married into the family, they had him sign a prenuptial agreement to prevent any assets from being taken. This was why Finnian only dared to secretly keep a mistress, knowing that he couldn't claim any of Isolde's wealth..
The Porter Family had only one daughter, Isolde, who had been pampered since childhood. They would never let her suffer, let alone share a husband with another woman. As the party at fault in the marriage, Finnian wouldn't get a penny even if they went to court.
The only uncertainty was whether the video Isolde had could serve as evidence of Finnian's infidelity. After all, it only showed them kissing, and the footage was unclear due to the dim lighting.
Diana thought, 'Evidence of infidelity? That's easy. I used to be a hacker, and checking someone's hotel records is a piece of cake. If there were hidden cameras in the room, I could even retrieve some explicit footage.'
Isolde, still uneasy after hearing Robert's analysis, mentioned that the private investigator's findings were on her phone. She didn't have the phone with her and feared Finnian's family might have taken it.
But Diana turned to her and asked, "Do you know Finnian's social security number and phone number?"
Isolde, unsure of Diana's intentions, nodded blankly. "Yes, I do. Why?"
