Chapter 120 What is the truth behind Esme's death?
After she grew up, she tried digging into Esme's past but found nothing.
No matter how hard she looked, it was always a dead end.
"After graduation, your mom just vanished. No one could reach her. I never thought she'd marry into the Kennedy family in Ridgewood and have such an amazing daughter," Adrian said, looking at Victoria. She really did look like Esme, especially those sharp, clear eyes.
"Didn't you try to find my mom at her home?" Victoria asked.
Adrian sighed, "We did, but the address was fake. The place on her school records was occupied by a mother and son who didn't know her. It wasn't surprising, though. Your mom's background was always a mystery. She never mentioned her family. During holidays, she stayed in her rented apartment and never went anywhere. No one ever visited her either."
This matched what Saskia had said. She always suspected Esme's identity but found no clues.
Now, her urge to find answers was back. She didn't believe Esme had no relatives.
"Do you know where my mom's apartment was?" Victoria asked, knowing Adrian was close to Esme.
"Yes, I'll write it down for you," Adrian said.
Then, Adrian cautiously asked, "Can I ask what happened to your mom? She was always healthy and into fitness. How did she pass away from an illness?"
"Cancer," Victoria said briefly.
Adrian frowned. Cancer?
After their talk, Adrian wrote down the address of Esme's old apartment and left.
It had been almost twenty years. Adrian wasn't sure if the apartment was still there.
But whether it was or not, she wanted to see where Esme had lived. When Victoria got back to the hotel, Lila and Marlowe were awake. They had just finished washing up and saw Victoria looking a bit distracted.
"What's wrong, darling?" Lila asked.
Victoria snapped out of it and saw Lila looked refreshed, indicating she had slept well. She shook her head and said, "Nothing. I just ordered breakfast downstairs. It'll be up soon. Let's eat before we head out."
She then sat on the sofa.
Actually, she had been thinking about Adrian's last words.
He said, "Your mom's cancer would have required treatment. But from what you said, she was diagnosed and passed away within a month. Isn't that too fast? Even in the late stages, chemo could have bought her some time. And someone as health-conscious as your mom would have had regular check-ups. It's hard to believe she wouldn't have caught it earlier. Plus, she had you. No way would a mom like her skip treatment and just leave you behind. How could she do that?"
Adrian's words had struck a chord. Looking back, there were many suspicious points about Esme's death.
But she couldn't piece it all together. It seemed only the Kennedy family knew the truth.
The truth they told her was all she knew. At five years old, she didn't know any better; she just believed whatever Simon said.
If the Kennedy family had really hidden the truth about Esme's death, what was the real story?
She was now desperate to uncover these mysteries.
"Victoria, breakfast is here," Marlowe called out, but she didn't respond.
"Darling, breakfast is here," Lila called again, but still no response.
They exchanged a glance and walked over, seeing Victoria frowning deeply, her face looking quite grim.
They suspected she hadn't gone out just to order breakfast. She must have met someone or done something.
Victoria saw them and snapped out of it, the gloom on her face disappearing instantly.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
Knowing Victoria didn't like to talk about her own matters, Lila didn't press further. "Breakfast is here. Let's eat."
"Okay," Victoria nodded.
