Chapter 227 People Recently Offended
Christopher was caught off guard by the sudden chaos and had no time to cut his losses.
The Shadow Syndicate was shut down.
That night, the cops swooped in and nabbed a bunch of gamblers, johns, and junkies, all red-handed.
The folks they grabbed were clueless about what just went down.
Raymond gave him the lowdown, "Mr. Howard, the cops rounded up everyone, and the Shadow Syndicate's locked up tight."
The police raid was so quick, they barely had time to trash the important stuff, let alone move the cash.
Eventually, this takedown cost them nearly $100 million.
Out of nowhere, there was a loud crash. A glass shattered on the floor, pieces flying everywhere, followed by a pissed-off yell. "Fuck!"
Christopher barked, "Find out who did this!"
Meanwhile, at the Shadow Syndicate, Alfonso, the raid leader, got a call and rushed his team to the scene.
One cop reported, "Alfonso, we’ve almost cleared everything. Found a computer in an office, but the data’s trashed. We’ll take it back, see if our tech guys can salvage anything."
Alfonso nodded. "Got it."
He stood there, hands on his hips, his muscular frame tense. His eyes scanned the now unsually quiet bar hall.
Wade walked in. "Alfonso, we checked. The Shadow Syndicate’s owner is Otis Reynolds. We’ve sent people to nab him."
Otis? The Reynolds family?
The Reynolds family in Ridgewood was small-time, but they’d been doing alright lately. Still, compared to the big fish, they were nothing.
Overnight, the Reynolds family was in deep shit. Otis, the head honcho, got busted.
In the interrogation room, Otis sat on the bench, hands on the bar in front of him. He looked rough, eyes bloodshot, wearing just a hotel bathrobe and disposable slippers.
When the cops found him, he was about to get it on in a hotel.
Right at the moment of truth, a bunch of uniformed cops barged in, killing the vibe instantly.
Once brought in, he surprisingly played ball, answering everything and taking the fall.
As soon as Otis was arrested, Christopher got the news.
Raymond reported, "Mr. Howard, Otis confessed. He’s taking all the blame."
Christopher closed his eyes for a moment, his right thumb rubbing the web of his left hand. The room fell silent for a few seconds.
When he set up the Shadow Syndicate, Christopher made sure he had an escape plan. Otherwise, he'd be the one in cuffs today.
"How's the investigation going?" Christopher's voice was icy, with a dangerous edge.
Raymond looked down a bit. "We got nothing. The other side left no traces; they were ready for this."
But it wasn't rocket science to figure out who it was. After a pause, he added, "We've only offended one person recently."
Christopher's eyes snapped open, a sinister gleam in them, his face cold and terrifying. "I told you to destroy all the evidence!"
Christopher cursed again, "I told you to destroy all the evidence!"
Raymond stayed quiet, lips pressed together. Alexander wasn't just the head of the Howard family or the CEO of Vertex Holdings Group. His power was way scarier than they thought, and they couldn't figure out who else had his back besides the Howard family.
Christopher had always wanted to take Alexander's place, but it wasn't that easy.
No matter how much evidence they trashed, Alexander's crew could still dig it up.
Just like with the Shadow Syndicate, no matter how low-key they were, Alexander still found out.
Alexander probably already knew Christopher was the brains behind the Shadow Syndicate.
If they hadn't prepped for this, they'd be busted by now.
Raymond was starting to believe Alexander knew everything they did.
The next morning, the authorities dropped a statement, giving the public the lowdown.
The speed of solving the case was mind-blowing, leaving netizens in awe.
At the police station, Alfonso came back from a meeting looking serious.
Wade put a cup of water on his desk, puzzled. "Alfonso, what's with the face? You went to get praised, but anyone would think you got chewed out."
"Otis confessed too quickly," Alfonso said, suspicious. "He didn't even get a lawyer, like he knew how this would end."
Wade hadn't thought that far, bluntly saying, "Isn't it good he confessed? Saves us the hassle of staying up all night with him. Plus, the evidence is solid. He had no choice but to confess."
While that made sense, Alfonso still felt it was too smooth.
It felt familiar, just like with Matteo before.
Suddenly, something clicked. He looked up sharply and asked urgently, "Where's Otis now?"
Wade replied, "In the detention center. Once the paperwork's done, he'll be moved to prison by tomorrow at the latest."
Wade didn't get why Alfonso was suddenly so worked up.
"From now on, any guards watching Otis and the staff responsible for his food, drinks and so on will all be our own people," Alfonso said, his ruggedly handsome face darkening.
