Chapter 299 Everyone Gets It Wrong Sometimes
Sarah's whole body tensed up, fighting the pain and the urge to turn around and confront Claire.
'How can she even think she has the right to call herself my mom?' Sarah thought, gripping the doorknob so hard her knuckles turned white, then letting go just as quickly.
Without a word, she walked out.
Claire wasn't about to give up. She chased after Sarah, grabbing her wrist.
"Sarah, just say one word to me. Please, just one," Claire pleaded.
Her words and touch shattered the walls Sarah had built up.
Not caring if Claire would fall, Sarah clenched her fist and yanked her hand away.
Claire let out a startled cry, stumbling back a few steps but managing to stay on her feet.
Sarah's voice was cold and ruthless. "Lady, don't go around claiming kinship. I have no family, no mom! She died a long time ago."
Claire's mind went blank. For a moment, she thought she might have mistaken someone else. But Sarah's eyes were too familiar, especially with that tear mole at the corner. Claire couldn't be wrong.
"Then take off your mask. Let me see, okay?" Claire asked.
Sarah let out a mocking laugh. "Why should I?"
'It's been over ten years. She hasn't seen me, so how could she recognize me? How ridiculous!' Sarah thought to herself.
She turned to leave again, but Claire wasn't done.
"You have hatred in your eyes for me. If you really didn't know me, you wouldn't look at me like that," Claire said firmly, moving in front of Sarah to block her way, staring at her with eyes that mirrored Sarah's.
Upon closer inspection, Claire's face indeed bore some resemblance to Sarah's, particularly in the shape.
Sarah, a seasoned actress with numerous awards, quickly reined in her emotions and regained her composure. She chuckled lightly. "Lady, everyone gets it wrong sometimes."
This wasn't just a response to Claire's words but also a bit of self-mockery. Sarah's biggest mistake was choosing the wrong parents.
But Claire didn't think that deeply. She just wanted to see Sarah.
Claire knew Sarah was a superstar. She used to only see her on TV, but now she was right in front of her. How could she give up?
With Claire blocking her way, Sarah had no choice but to say coldly, "Move!"
Claire was determined. "Just one look."
They stood there, facing off, and Sarah mocked herself again inwardly.
She thought she'd never see Claire again, but fate had other plans.
Sarah also thought that if she ever met Claire, she'd lose control and loudly demand to know why Claire abandoned her and left her to die.
But now, face to face with Claire, she couldn't bring herself to ask. She admitted she had shown signs of losing control earlier.
She held it in, thanks to her experience in the entertainment industry, where controlling emotions was crucial. A good actor couldn't stay immersed in a role; they had to act seriously while working and return to reality after.
This had shaped her current state of mind.
Meanwhile, Bella and Nancy, noticing Sarah hadn't returned, came looking for her and saw the elegantly dressed Claire blocking Sarah.
Bella ran over and casually pushed Claire aside.
Bella looked at Sarah and asked, "Sarah, you okay?"
Sarah replied, "I'm fine. Let's go."
Claire was left standing there, looking lost, until Julia came over.
Julia asked, "Claire, what's wrong?" She saw Claire looking distracted and very downcast, feeling worried. After all, Algernon doted on Claire and had instructed her to take good care of Claire before they left.
When Julia came over, she happened to see Victoria and others coming from the same direction.
But no matter how she tried, she couldn't figure out the relationship between Claire and Victoria.
Claire said flatly, "It's nothing. Let's go back. I have a bit of a headache."
They hadn't found a satisfactory gift yet, but Julia didn't dare say anything and had to take her back.
In the car, Victoria noticed Sarah was unusually quiet.
Victoria asked, "Did you meet her?"
Sarah was silent for a few seconds before weakly responding.
When Sarah was six, Claire couldn't stand Sarah's father, Sterling Saunders, being a loser. They lived in a rural house, scrimping and saving every day, with two elderly people to support. Claire decisively divorced Sterling, asking for nothing but the divorce.
Claire was beautiful, and as the neighbors said, she wasn't suited to marry into a rural place like that.
Their neighbors couldn't understand why she married Sterling.
Claire was brought back by Sterling from working outside, already pregnant when they returned, and later gave birth to Sarah.
From a young age, Sarah vaguely sensed Claire's coldness towards Sterling, but being just a child, she had no place to meddle in the affairs of them.
She still remembered the day Claire left. She cried her heart out, begging Claire not to go, but Claire left without looking back.
Claire had promised Sarah she would come back to see her, but she never did, not even when Sarah had an accident and nearly died.
So, what right did Claire have to call herself Sarah's mother now?
Victoria knew Sarah needed some quiet time, so she didn't say much. After taking Sarah home and spending a while with her, Victoria got a call and had to leave. She asked Sarah's assistant, Bella, to stay with her and reminded Sarah to call if she needed anything.
After leaving Sarah's apartment, Victoria drove straight to Vertex Holdings Group.
The call was from Dylan. Last night, Alexander had asked Dylan to verify the information Christopher had given her. He now had results and suggested she come over to see for herself.
