Chapter 508 You Set Me Up
Cleveland Clinic.
Owen had just come out of the operating room and returned to his office.
The phone on the desk rang several times.
With his distinct knuckles, he unbuttoned his white coat, sat in the office chair, picked up his phone, unlocked it, and opened Facebook.
Among their group of friends, except for Grant and Alexander who rarely gossiped, the other three always upheld the fine tradition of "sharing gossip together."
Caleb happily and generously shared a video he recorded at a restaurant in the group chat.
Caleb: [@Owen, is the one-night stand Lila mentioned with you, or someone else? How did she have a miscarriage? Is the child yours? How could you let your child be aborted?]
Garrett: [Oh my God! Why did Lila go on a blind date? @Owen, did you guys break up? Hurry up and gossip about the affairs!]
Owen frowned as he read what the two were saying in the group chat, scrolled up, and clicked on the video Caleb posted.
In the video, there was only a side profile of Lila and the face of the man opposite her.
Lila went on a blind date?
Why?
He rarely got angry, almost never.
But at this moment, his chest felt like it was burning, and a sharp look flashed in his eyes behind his glasses.
After watching, he ignored the people in the group chat, exited Facebook directly, and dialed Lila's number.
On the other end, Lila had just finished talking with Efrain and was about to leave.
The phone in her bag rang.
She took it out and saw it was Owen.
Without hesitation, she answered the call while getting up.
"Where are you?" Before she could speak, Owen's somewhat hoarse voice came through, with a hint of seriousness.
But Lila, being careless, didn't notice anything unusual.
Without thinking, she said, "I'm outside, just met with Victoria, now heading back to the office."
She wasn't lying; she did meet Victoria, and she was indeed about to return to the office.
She just filtered out the irrelevant person.
Efrain looked at Lila's departing figure in shock.
What she just said completely overturned his understanding.
"I like both men and women. If you don't mind, we can try dating, but this matter stays between us. If you think it over, you can give me an answer before tonight. I'll wait for you," Lila said.
Efrain, being a conservative and old-fashioned person, couldn't agree with what Lila said.
In the end, he left the restaurant angrily.
Caleb continued gossiping in the group chat. He texted: [Owen, did you know Lila likes both men and women?]
Then he tagged Alexander and texted: [Alexander, Victoria is the closest to Lila, Victoria wouldn't...]
Alexander replied instantly: [Get lost!]
Alexander wasn't interested in their gossip.
He was only interested in his beloved wife at home.
At this time, Grant, who rarely sent messages in the group chat, also texted: [Lila never tells the truth. The things she says, only @Caleb and @Garrett, you two fools, would believe!]
The two who were called fools fell silent.
Then, they saw Grant texted: [However, Lila's mom has indeed been arranging blind dates for her recently and even asked me if I had any suitable recommendations.]
After saying that, he directly tagged Owen.
Owen had just hung up the phone and saw someone tagging him in the group chat.
He clicked in and without saying a word, directly tagged Grant: [Grant, aren't we ride-or-die friends? Just recommend me.]
Owen knew Lila didn't want her mom to know about his existence, and he couldn't openly reveal it and make her angry, so he had to find another way.
How could he forget about Grant?
Grant coldly replied with a voice message: [Now you remember we're best buddies? But when Marlowe was pregnant, none of you told me!]
Caleb immediately replied: [Grant, that had nothing to do with me, I didn't participate in that.]
Garrett quickly tested: [Me neither, I didn't participate.]
The remaining two did participate.
But it was no threat to Alexander because he had nothing to ask of Grant, so he wasn't afraid of him holding a grudge.
So he replied with a punctuation mark.
There was only one very unlucky Owen.
Evening.
Lila returned to her apartment at eight o'clock.
After sitting in the office all day, her back and waist were sore.
Every time she came back, she habitually went straight to take a shower and then lay on the bed.
But today she had just changed her shoes, crossed the entrance, and walked towards the living room. After a few steps, she saw a figure sitting on the sofa, which startled her, causing her to stumble.
Fortunately, the figure was a familiar face.
She raised her hand to her chest, breathed a sigh of relief, and looked at Owen. "Why didn't you turn on the light when you came back? You scared me half to death!"
When she came back, the lights in the house were off, so she thought he hadn't returned.
Seeing someone suddenly sitting in the living room, how could it not be scary?
"What's wrong with you?" She noticed his stern face, looking troubled. She tilted her head and looked at him seriously. "Do you have something on your mind?"
Owen didn't speak and then looked away, no longer looking at her.
Lila was silent.
His expression was definitely not right.
She frowned, walked to the seat next to him, and sat down.
She looked at him suspiciously, then used both hands to hold his cheeks, turning his face to look at her.
She squinted her eyes and raised an eyebrow. "Are you hiding something from me?"
Owen looked at her, letting her rub his cheeks.
After a long time, he raised his hand to pull her hands down.
"Don't you have something you're hiding from me?" he asked in return.
Lila felt a bit guilty for no reason, but she still acted normal. "No, what could I be hiding from you?"
Seeing that she didn't want to say, he suddenly felt helpless.
Then, he sighed deeply in his heart and said, "Next Tuesday is my grandfather's birthday."
Lila blinked. "And then?"
"My mom said that everyone in the Rodriguez family must go back a day early."
"Okay, then you go back. It's not like I can't live without you for a day."
Owen felt a bit upset but still said, "But my mom has a request."
"What request?" Lila asked, puzzled.
"My mom wants me to bring a girlfriend back, or else don't go back and annoy her."
"Then just bring one." She responded quickly.
"So you're agreeing to go back with me?"
Lila didn't respond as quickly this time. She leaned back, squinting at him, "Are you trying to set me up?"
He knew she wasn't easy to fool; otherwise, she wouldn't be Lila.
"I can't just bring any girl back, can I?"
Lila was about to say something, but Owen stared at her, clearly saying, "Think carefully before you speak."
He knew her personality; she was ninety-nine percent likely to agree to his proposal.
She wasn't jealous, but as long as she knew the real situation, she wouldn't be jealous.
And she might even be "enthusiastic" enough to help him find a girl to play along.
He guessed right.
But Lila was also sharp; she wouldn't be foolish enough to directly address the point that would make him angry.
Although Owen was easygoing, he couldn't be easily offended, or else she would suffer.
Owen saw her thinking, assuming she was considering whether to go back with him.
Just then, she said, "This is easy to solve."
He just started to smile, but then he was dejected.
Lila changed her tone, "Then don't go back. After all, your mom said not to go back and annoy her. But you can't miss your grandfather's birthday either."
She clicked her tongue lightly, looking troubled. "Wait, couldn't you just sneak back to see your grandfather without your mom noticing?"
After saying that, she raised a smile, raising an eyebrow as if to say, "Isn't my idea great?"
Owen was silent. He said it for nothing!
He knew that no matter what, she wouldn't agree to go back with him.
"What will it take for you to go back with me?" Owen asked.
The next day.
Fighting off sleepiness, Lila walked into the company.
She didn't notice Victoria following her in.
Until she entered the exclusive elevator.
She suddenly heard someone speaking in her ear, "What did you do last night?"
Lila's heart felt like it might leap out of her chest. It was racing as she turned to see Victoria, who had appeared silently beside her, as if out of nowhere.
"Dear, are you trying to scare me to death?" Lila complained.
Victoria crossed her arms, tilted her head, and looked at her tired appearance, puzzled. "I've known you for so long, this is the first time I've seen you come to work looking tired. If it were the usual, you wouldn't come to the company."
She asked suspiciously, "Tell me, what happened? Did you have a fight with Owen?"
