Chapter 311 He Is Lucky
Alexander grabbed his phone and opened up Facebook Messenger. He noticed a new message from Victoria, the only person he had pinned.
Victoria had written: [Honey, can I not be the lady of the Howard family?] She even added a sad crying emoji at the end.
Alexander saw the message and couldn't help but smile. He decided to start a video call.
Victoria didn't answer the video call and instead called him back with a voice call. "Honey, I can't do a video call right now. I'm out shopping with Mom right now," she said.
Alexander asked, "Are you really tired?"
"Yeah, super tired," Victoria replied without missing a beat. "It's not just my body that's tired, my heart is too."
Hearing her whine in that cute way, Alexander chuckled. "Well, the physical part is my fault. I should've taken it easy last night. I'll make it up to you tonight."
Victoria quickly clarified, "I'm not talking about that. I mean we've been shopping forever, and my legs are killing me."
Alexander teased, "When you go shopping with your friends, you never complain about being tired. So, it still comes down to last night."
Victoria changed the subject. "I just found out that we need to prepare so many gifts for our wedding. Mom said we have to give thank-you gifts to all the guests attending the wedding. It adds up to hundreds."
Alexander just listened quietly, occasionally making a sound to show he was paying attention.
Victoria continued, "And Mom said we have to prepare gifts according to each generation. I was floored. I suggested to Mom that we should just prepare a few hundred identical gifts to save time and effort. But she immediately told me that we can't do that because it would seem insincere. I was..."
Hearing her getting more and more frustrated, Alexander knew she didn't have the patience for these things like Saskia did.
The Howard family was huge, with many branches, and keeping everyone happy meant sticking to a lot of formalities and etiquette. After marrying into the Howard family, Saskia naturally took over many of its affairs. Though Saskia was straightforward, she grew up in the Cooper family, where she was their cherished daughter. The Cooper family placed great importance on etiquette and customs. These practices became deeply ingrained in her from a young age. As a result, she adapted quickly and, with her unique personality, managed the household affairs efficiently and orderly.
In contrast, although Victoria was born into the wealthy Kennedy family, she was never taught these things.
Given her environment, it was quite remarkable that she managed to maintain a kind heart.
In the Kennedy family, she was only taught how to survive and protect her own interests.
So, Alexander totally got why she felt this way today.
But he didn't want her to change anything, so he said, "Victoria, you are you. Mom is Mom."
Then, he added, "If you don't want to handle these matters, you can leave them to Sawyer or Molly. You just need to be my wife and stay by my side. No one but you is qualified to be my wife. The lady of the Howard family can only be you."
After hearing this, Victoria thought, 'Oh no, I'm falling for him again.'
Alexander's voice was already pleasant, and this sudden confession made her heart flutter. Her cheeks couldn't help but flush.
"Doesn't that make me a freeloader?" she asked softly. "After all, I'm occupying this position without doing anything. It doesn't seem right."
Alexander's deep, pleasant laughter came from his throat. "It's okay. I allow it."
The next second, Victoria smiled and replied cheerfully, "As long as you say so."
Alexander lowered his voice, sounding all serious, "Are you trying to get me to say something?"
"Anyway, you're not allowed to go back on your word," Victoria shot back. "If you do, you can find someone else to be your wife."
Alexander frowned on the other end of the line, his voice suddenly icy. "What did you just say?"
Just then, Saskia finished her conversation and called out to Victoria. Victoria quickly said, "Oh, Mom is calling me. I have to go."
Alexander stared at the ended call, feeling a mix of helplessness and affection.
Actually, he had asked Saskia to hang out with her today because he didn't want her to overthink things at home and wanted to distract her.
But he had no clue about Victoria's plans.
So, later on...
Victoria and Saskia were still at the mall, having just walked into a jewelry store. Saskia was there to discuss something, and Victoria didn't want to eavesdrop, so she chilled in the waiting area.
After hearing Saskia's call, Victoria walked over and naturally called out, "Mom."
"Ms. Cooper, is this your eldest daughter-in-law?" One of the female store clerks who had just helped Saskia smiled at Victoria. "She looks even more beautiful in person than in the photos online. She must have brains to match her beauty, right?"
"Yes, indeed. She's not only beautiful but also kind, capable, and sensible. And most importantly, she's very smart." Saskia wasn't holding back at all. She looked at Victoria with more joy and affection than she did at her own two sons.
Her words also highlighted Victoria's abilities to others.
The store clerk said, "You're so lucky to have such a wonderful daughter-in-law."
Saskia remarked, "Alexander is the one who got lucky marrying such a wonderful woman. Otherwise, where would I find such a great daughter-in-law?"
Although she said Alexander was not good enough for Victoria, Alexander was actually a business tycoon. Her words were all in defense of Victoria.
It was clear to everyone that Saskia was very pleased with Victoria. Otherwise, she wouldn't publicly downplay Alexander's status to defend her.
The store clerk didn't know what to say for a moment.
Victoria was quite surprised by Saskia's words and was very touched.
Actually, she didn't feel much about the store clerk's words.
But Saskia had seen a lot in her time. Although the store clerk didn't say it outright, her actions and tone made it clear she was mocking Victoria, and Saskia wasn't about to let her get away with such petty behavior in her presence.
Her daughter-in-law, Victoria, was not someone anyone could talk about.
Besides, Victoria was cherished by Alexander. She wouldn't let these people make snide remarks about her.
The store manager came out in time to smooth things over. Then Victoria and Saskia were respectfully escorted to the door.
Victoria, holding Saskia's hand, suddenly had an idea and smiled at her, saying, "Mom, how about I treat you to dinner tonight?"
"Not going home?" Saskia asked.
Victoria shook her head. "No, let's go eat something delicious."
Saskia didn't even think about it and agreed right away. Then she called home to say she wouldn't be back for dinner.
The butler was surprised because Saskia usually never missed dinner at home unless there was a special event. But Preston was still at home. So who was Saskia going to have dinner with?
Meanwhile, Victoria called Serenity Grove Manor to say she wouldn’t be home for dinner either. She forgot to inform Alexander, and Sawyer assumed that neither of them would be home for dinner. So, after hanging up, he told Molly, "No need to cook dinner tonight."
Victoria and Saskia walked hand in hand to a nearby food street. Saskia took good care of herself and looked even younger than many people in their twenties and thirties. When they walked together, most people thought they were sisters. Their close bond made them seem even more like sisters.
