Chapter 218 Victoria Scolds Bryan
Lila had been waiting on Victoria's reply, but it felt like forever and still nada.
Typing couldn't be that slow, right?
And there was always voice messaging.
Instead of Victoria, she got a ping from Marlowe.
Marlowe: [OMG, what happened? Victoria, you good? My phone was busted for days, just got it back from the shop.]
Lila glanced at it, no wonder she hadn't seen any messages from her lately.
Lila: [Marlowe, is Grant still with you?]
Lila had hit up Marlowe before, but no response.
Two days ago, Lila swung by North Courtyard, thinking of dropping in on Marlowe.
But just as she was about to turn in, she saw Grant's car rolling into the community, so she bailed.
Then she got swamped with Donna's stuff and totally spaced it.
As soon as Grant came up, Marlowe looked ticked.
Her phone got trashed because of Grant.
That night, Marlowe got a call from a dude at work, and Grant just chucked her phone into a water basin without a word.
She was like, "What the hell is wrong with you?"
He deadpanned, "You're married now, no calls from guys."
She was fuming.
Her phone had pics of the kids she needed to send to the parents' group, but she hadn't gotten around to it before he wrecked her phone.
Plus, he strong-armed her into moving into the apartment he bought, or he wouldn't let her work.
Out of options and under his thumb, she had to move in.
Marlowe spilled the tea to Lila and replied: [Yeah, he's here.]
Lila asked, curious: [So what's the deal with you two now?]
Marlowe: [It's a mess.]
Lila went quiet for a bit.
In these situations, folks usually tried to play peacemaker, especially since Grant was Lila's kin. Lila was at a loss for words.
Mainly, Lila was scared that if Grant found out, he'd come down hard on her.
Lila felt like Grant had some different vibes for Marlowe; otherwise, with his nasty temper, he would've dragged Marlowe back ages ago instead of sticking around.
After some more back-and-forth, Victoria finally hit her up.
She sent two 30-second voice messages to give the lowdown.
Victoria got a call from Adrian in the afternoon. "Adrian, what's up?"
Adrian cut to the chase. "Victoria, I gotta ask. You know Bryan? What's his deal?"
Victoria was caught off guard; she didn't see Adrian asking about Bryan coming.
It made her think of Ruth. She wasn't dumb; something must've gone down between them.
She thought for a sec but didn't spill Bryan's real identity, 'cause it was kinda a big deal. "I can vouch he's not a bad guy."
Adrian was sharp. Victoria's vague answer said a lot without saying much.
She knew him, and his identity wasn't basic, so she couldn't spill.
There was a pause on the other end, and Victoria added, "I get you're worried about Ruth. Chill, Bryan knows his boundaries, and I trust Ruth does too. They're grown-ups."
Adrian sighed, "You're right. If you say he's not a bad guy, I'm cool."
Adrian was grooming Ruth to take over, so he couldn't afford any slip-ups.
After hanging up with Adrian, she called Bryan, who picked up quick.
Bryan's deep voice came through. "What's up?"
Victoria didn't mess around and asked straight up, "What did you do to Ruth?"
Bryan was quiet for a few seconds, probably not expecting that.
Bryan replied with a playful tone, "What do you think a guy can do to a girl?"
Victoria's mouth twitched.
She shouldn't have asked that question.
She frowned, holding back the urge to curse, "If you didn't do anything, would her dad be calling me to ask about you?"
Bryan raised an eyebrow slightly. Adrian called her to ask about him? He didn't see that coming.
"Where are you now?" Victoria asked again.
"Jakarda City," Bryan replied, playing it cool.
"So what exactly did you do? Why does Adrian think you're not serious?" Victoria pressed, her tone getting a bit sharp.
She remembered Adrian's last words before hanging up. "Victoria, I trust you, but he doesn't seem serious. I don't think Ruth and he are a good match. The real reason I'm calling is, if you're close to him, please tell him to back off from Ruth. I've already picked a suitable family for her for an arranged marriage."
Otherwise, she wouldn't have called Bryan.
Victoria relayed Adrian's message. After she finished, Bryan was quiet for a long time.
Then, she heard a voice that wasn't too enthusiastic but was definitely infuriating.
He said, "I just kissed Ruth in front of him and teased her a bit."
Victoria's mouth twitched.
She was really speechless. Teased Ruth a bit?
She really wanted to curse him, and she actually did, "Bryan, are you out of your mind?"
Bryan stayed silent.
"Can't you find a place where no one is around to flirt?" Victoria was really pissed and a bit embarrassed. She had just confidently assured Adrian that Bryan was a sensible guy, and now she found out Bryan had done such things. "You flirted with Ruth in front of her dad. Are you out of your mind?"
Bryan continued to stay silent.
She took a breath and continued, "I don't care what your intentions are with Ruth. If you really like her, I won't stop you. Do whatever you want! But if you're just looking for a thrill, get back to Aidamore right now! Otherwise, don't blame me for calling Enrique to personally drag you back!"
Bryan, who didn't dare to retort a single word, continued to stay silent.
Standing next to him, Virgil was also stunned and didn't dare to breathe.
No one would dare to speak when Victoria was mad.
And indeed, only Victoria could get Enrique James to help.
One call from Victoria, and Bryan would have to go back.
Bryan feared only two people: the currently furious Victoria and Enrique, who was far away in Aidamore.
Alexander had just pushed open the office door and heard Victoria's last two sentences, clearly filled with anger. It was the first time he had seen her both angry and helpless.
He had been to Aidamore once; not everyone had the chance to go.
"Who are you talking to?" Alexander casually asked.
Victoria quickly replied, "A brainless jerk."
On the other end, Bryan, who was being called a brainless jerk, stayed silent.
She dared to say it, but he didn't dare to talk back.
Victoria felt she had said everything she needed to say. Before hanging up, she added, "Send Virgil over; I need him."
Without waiting for a reply, she hung up.
Bryan, who had been scolded and then ruthlessly hung up on, twitched his mouth.
If he had known, he wouldn't have answered the call.
Virgil blinked and asked, "Did Victoria just mention me?"
Bryan, who had been scolded into silence, coldly glanced at him. "You got pretty sharp ears, huh? How much did you hear?"
Virgil was about to blurt out, "I heard everything," but when he met Bryan's cold gaze, he changed his words. "I didn't hear anything, just that Victoria needs my help."
Bryan rolled his eyes at him. "Then why aren't you going?"
Virgil was speechless. He silently thought, 'You don't dare to retort to Victoria, so you bully me instead.'
