Chapter 224 Intuition
In the café, Lila leaned in, eyes glued to Victoria. "So, Vicky, how was your date last night?"
Victoria really didn't feel like answering.
Alex had promised to chill at home with her today, but then he got a call and had to rush back to the office.
Since Lila invited her out, she figured, why not?
She thought Lila had something important to say, but nope, it was just nonstop gossip about yesterday, with a bunch of random questions.
Lila, chin propped on her hand, was all ears. Besties always shared everything, right?
Victoria couldn't dodge her questions forever.
Taking a sip of her coffee, Victoria finally said, "It was kinda weird, honestly." She paused, coughed a bit. "You know, that heart-fluttering kinda weird."
She couldn't really put it into words, but she liked it.
Seeing Victoria's happy, shy look, Lila sighed. "Girl, you're totally head over heels for Alexander!"
"But who can blame you? He's loaded, powerful, hot, and he can cook. Plus, he's super sweet and romantic with you. He's the whole package." Lila sighed again. "And all this, we only saw after you came into the picture. We finally saw the soft side of the cold, ruthless Alexander."
Victoria just smiled, not denying any of Lila's praise.
Lila smirked, raised an eyebrow, and teased, "So, how's he in bed?"
Victoria shot back, "Lila, cut it out."
Just then, Marlowe showed up.
Victoria filled them in about the wedding.
"The wedding date's set?" Marlowe asked.
"Yep," Victoria nodded. "March 16th next year."
This morning, Saskia mentioned Nathan had picked the date, and it just so happened to be Alexander's twenty-ninth birthday.
Lila muttered, "March 16th? Didn't you say that's Alexander's birthday?"
Victoria nodded and kept sipping her coffee.
Lila grinned. "Is this your way of being all lovey-dovey?"
Marlowe smiled. "It's super romantic and meaningful."
It reminded her of her own stuff with Grant, and her smile turned a bit sad and self-mocking, but it quickly faded.
But Victoria noticed.
Victoria smoothly changed the topic, looking at Marlowe. "So, Marlowe, how's work? Settling in okay?"
When Marlowe smiled, those cute dimples showed up, making her look extra pretty.
"Yeah, it's going great. I'm keeping up with the teaching, my colleagues are cool, and the students are adorable."
Hearing that, both of them felt relieved. Marlowe was super proud, and they didn't want to mess with her work. As long as she was happy, that was enough.
"Oh, and Vicky, I won't be crashing at your place for now," Marlowe said.
Victoria didn't ask why, just said, "No worries, just keep it. You can stay whenever you want."
Sometimes, things didn't need to be spelled out. Good friends got it without saying everything, and Marlowe liked it that way.
"There's one more thing," Marlowe said, looking a bit troubled.
The two of them stared at Marlowe, waiting for her to spill the beans.
Marlowe finally said, "So, I bumped into an old friend recently. He knows I used to dance, and his company is backing this dance competition show that's in the audition phase. He asked if I wanted to join, and I'm thinking about it."
Lila put her cup down and jumped in, "Girl, you gotta do it! No question, just go for it!"
She seemed more hyped than Marlowe herself.
Victoria stayed chill. After a moment, she said, "If you wanna do it, go for it. If not, no biggie. Just make sure you won't regret it later."
Regret? That word hit Marlowe hard.
She'd given up once before. Was she gonna let it slip by again?
During her marriage to Grant, she had no social life. Dance was her only escape, and every time she went out, it was to secretly practice.
After they split up, Victoria headed to the police department. Alfonso had called her to pick up some documents.
Meanwhile, Alexander was getting updates on Victoria's whereabouts.
Her movements were reported every hour.
As soon as Victoria stepped into the police station, her phone rang. "Victoria, this morning, data monitoring showed someone was tailing you. Your whereabouts were reported every hour, but weirdly, the person getting the info didn't seem to have any bad intentions. I'll send the IP address to your phone."
Before hanging up, the caller added, "There's another group, just like before, and we can't dig up anything useful on them."
Victoria frowned slightly but stayed cool. "Got it."
After hanging up, she checked the unread message on her phone.
Seeing the familiar IP address, she smiled. So it was him.
"Here's the info you wanted on forensic expert Herman Simmons," Alfonso said, handing her the documents. "Sorry, but you can't take them out. You'll have to go through them here."
Victoria nodded. "No problem, I get it."
She opened the file and started reading.
Alfonso glanced at her and couldn't help but ask, "Why was Herman the first person you suspected?"
Victoria replied calmly, "Just a gut feeling."
Alfonso's mouth twitched. Who said they couldn't solve cases by following their gut?
Victoria quickly finished reading and looked up to see his questioning eyes.
She didn't mind and said, "Do you watch crime dramas?"
Alfonso was even more puzzled. What did crime dramas have to do with this case?
"You should watch them when you have time," Victoria sincerely suggested.
Before leaving, she said, "Let me know right away if you get any updates."
Wade walked in after she left and saw Alfonso half-sitting on the desk, arms crossed, deep in thought. "Alfonso, what's up?"
"Can crime dramas really help solve cases?" Alfonso asked, looking up.
Wade instinctively replied, "What?"
Alfonso repeated his question and Victoria's answer.
Wade suddenly got it and, almost teasingly, said, "Alfonso, I think Ms. Kennedy's onto something. You shouldn't be cooped up in the office all day. Watching some TV shows might actually do you some good."
