Chapter 219 Are You That Idle?
After grabbing some grub, Victoria tagged along with Alexander to Vertex Holdings Group.
She was chillin' in Alexander's office now.
Alexander plopped down on the couch next to her, his hand automatically reaching up to ruffle her hair. Her locks were smooth, shiny, and soft, with a nice smell.
"Who ticked you off?" Alexander asked.
Victoria took a deep breath and gave him the lowdown about Adrian's call but kept mum about Bryan.
Later that evening, Virgil hustled over to Ridgefield to see Victoria.
"Victoria, what's up? Why'd you need me?" Virgil asked.
Victoria replied, "Stick close to Sarah for now, and keep it on the down-low. Hit me up if anything goes down."
After today's drama, she knew it wasn't over. But she couldn't babysit Sarah 24/7 and didn't trust anyone else with the job.
She'd already called Nancy Adams, but Nancy wouldn't be here for two days, and Victoria wasn't about to wait that long.
Luckily, Virgil was around. His combat skills and reflexes were way better than your average bodyguard, so she felt good leaving Sarah with him.
Plus, Virgil knew Sarah, which made things easier.
Virgil asked, "Victoria, if I'm watching Sarah, what about Bryan?"
Victoria shot him a cold smile and glared with icy eyes, lowering her voice. "He's a big boy. Can't he handle himself? Does he need you to babysit him 24/7?"
Virgil, feeling small, didn't dare to argue.
He smiled. "You're right."
Turning around, Virgil reported to Bryan and got chewed out again.
Virgil's exact words were, "Mr. Sanders, Victoria wants me to stay in Ridgefield to protect Sarah. What about you?"
Bryan said, "What can I do? If I tell you to come back, would you dare?"
Virgil, without missing a beat, said, "No."
Bryan gritted his teeth and yelled, "Then why are you asking? Got nothing better to do?"
Virgil clammed up.
The next day at noon, Victoria got a call from Alfonso.
He sounded serious on the phone, "Ms. Kennedy, an hour ago, Matteo had a sudden heart attack on the way to the detention center and died on the way to the hospital."
Victoria only said one thing, "I need to see Matteo's medical report."
Alfonso didn't argue and said he'd let her know once the autopsy report was out.
People did drop dead from heart attacks, but Matteo's case was fishy.
Just yesterday, he tried to off her and failed, got nabbed, and today he suddenly croaked from a heart attack? Way too convenient.
With him gone, all leads were dead ends.
Meanwhile, in the CEO's office at Vertex Holdings Group.
Alexander got the news right away.
Dylan was floored when he got the call.
The evidence of Matteo's attempted murder was rock solid.
By the book, he was definitely going to jail.
Plus, since Matteo tried to kill Victoria, knowing Alexander, he wouldn't let him off easy. So, they handed over evidence of Matteo's past shady dealings to the cops, making sure he'd rot in prison. But then he upped and died.
At 2 PM, Alfonso shot over Matteo's autopsy report and said, "The coroner confirmed it was a sudden heart attack. Dude had heart issues, and the cops found his meds at home."
Victoria skimmed through the report. She knew her stuff, and the data did show Matteo kicked the bucket from a heart attack.
After reading it, she immediately called Alfonso, who picked up fast.
"Who's the coroner?" Victoria asked straight up.
Alfonso frowned a bit, getting why she was asking.
"The coroner's been with the team for years. No way he's shady, right?" Alfonso said, but he didn't sound too sure.
Victoria didn't say much, just, "I need his info."
The police had to have the details on file, and Alfonso's rank was high enough to get it without hassle.
Alfonso was quiet for a few seconds before saying, "Okay, I'll send it to you."
Victoria replied, "Thanks, sorry for the hassle."
After hanging up, she shot a message to Alexander.
Five seconds later, Alexander called her.
She answered, feeling down, and weakly said, "Hey, babe."
"I'm here." Alexander was in a meeting room, leaving a bunch of execs behind as he walked to the door, with Dylan quickly following to open it.
The folks in the meeting room looked at each other, stunned. Did they just hear that? Or were they tripping?
Was that soft voice really Alexander? And making a call right in front of them? Unheard of.
The only person who could make him do that in such an important setting was Victoria.
"Are you busy?" Victoria asked.
"Not busy." Alexander replied as he stepped out of the meeting room.
The people in the meeting room were floored. Since when did Alexander learn to lie?
Not busy? Dude was swamped.
It was close to year-end, with tons of work, including wrapping up the second half of the year and planning for the next. Clearly, he was super busy.
As the top dog, Alexander had to listen to all the department summaries, point out flaws, and give suggestions.
Vertex Holdings Group had over twenty departments, not counting subsidiaries and branches.
Victoria herself was swamped with official stuff, but right now, she just wanted to talk to Alexander and didn't think much about it.
She chatted with him for an hour.
After talking to him, she felt way better, not as down.
In the past, she’d bottle things up, but now she thought of him first.
"Alright, I'll have someone look into this. Don't stress about it. After work tonight, I'll take you somewhere," Alexander said mysteriously.
Hearing his deep, soothing voice, Victoria felt much calmer and less agitated.
When he said he’d take her out tonight, she instinctively asked, "Where to?"
Alexander still kept it a secret, just chuckled warmly and said, "You'll see tonight."
Victoria mumbled, "Okay."
After hanging up, Alexander got up and went back to the meeting room. "Let's continue."
As soon as he sat down, he switched back to his cold, aloof, and intimidating self.
