Chapter 488 A Father's Subtle Matchmaking
It wasn't until noon that Victoria finally made her appearance.
Marcus had been standing guard outside the door the entire time.
Victoria spotted him standing there motionless like a statue, the very picture of despair.
'So, what happened?' she thought.
When Marcus saw her, his eyes lit up as if she were his savior.
Victoria raised an eyebrow slightly, tilting her head toward the hospital room door. "What's going on? Where's Mr. Howard?"
"Mrs. Howard, Mr. Howard kicked me out," he explained, clearly feeling wronged. "He said he didn't want to see me."
She could guess what was happening.
With a small smile, she asked, "Then who does he want to see?"
Marcus just looked at her without saying a word. The answer was obvious.
"Mrs. Howard, I don't think Mr. Howard has forgotten you at all," Marcus whispered, afraid Alexander might hear from inside.
"Is that so?" Victoria arched her eyebrows. "Yet the fact remains he doesn't remember I'm his wife."
Marcus looked puzzled. "When Mr. Howard woke up this morning, it was clear he wanted to see you, not me. He even asked where you were."
Inside the Hospital Room
Alexander was brooding in silence.
He heard movement outside and recognized a familiar voice, but the door remained closed.
After what seemed like an eternity, the door finally opened.
Unfortunately, it wasn't Victoria who entered, but Gideon and the others.
"Alexander, I get the feeling we're not exactly welcome," Gideon said, walking in first and immediately receiving an eye roll from Alexander.
Caleb chimed in from behind, "Obviously he's not happy to see us. We're not the person he's hoping for."
Alexander ignored their remarks.
"I see how it is," Gideon said with sudden understanding. "We just ran into Victoria outside. She mentioned having some business to attend to and left."
The atmosphere in the room instantly grew tense.
Caleb and Garrett clearly noticed Alexander's darkening expression.
Talk about self-inflicted misery.
None of them called Alexander out on it.
Garrett lounged comfortably on the sofa, legs crossed, looking at Alexander in the hospital bed. "You know, Alexander, this amnesia of yours has quite convenient timing."
Alexander leaned back against his pillows, furrowing his brow slightly.
His expression clearly asked, "What do you mean by 'convenient timing'?"
Caleb smiled with a gossipy air. "You haven't heard? Victoria's father is arranging a grand introduction party for her. Essentially, it's a gathering of eligible bachelors from prominent families—a thinly veiled husband-selection event. The news broke this morning."
Alexander's temple twitched as he remained silent.
He genuinely hadn't known about this.
Gideon helpfully pulled up the morning's viral news on his phone.
It included a three-minute edited video of Waverly confessing all her hidden misdeeds, including her secret affair with Griffin.
These two stories dominated today's headlines.
Waverly, once the reigning socialite of the Aidamore circle, had fallen from grace spectacularly.
The unanimous verdict online: [Absolutely disgusting!]
Zephyr had received the video late last night. After watching it, he hadn't hesitated to have Casey remove her from Presidential Palace.
He never imagined that his adopted children could harbor such malicious intentions.
Worse still, they had used the status he provided to commit numerous wrongs behind his back.
Most shocking of all was their desire to end Victoria's life—something he could never have anticipated.
After viewing the news on Gideon's phone, Alexander fell silent.
A question lingered in his mind: Had Victoria agreed to Zephyr's so-called introduction party?
Caleb and the others weren't overthinking things like he was.
They continued their conversation, deliberately saying things to provoke him.
They wanted to see how long Alexander could maintain his composure.
Meanwhile, Victoria was in Kirk Gutierrez's office discussing Alexander's condition.
Owen was present as well.
"Dr. Gutierrez, are you suggesting the blood clot in his brain could be causing his memory loss?" she asked.
Kirk replied, "It's not a certainty, but based on what you've described—that Mr. Howard has selective amnesia only regarding you—it's quite unusual. Typically, memory loss doesn't manifest in such a specific way."
Kirk was trying to be diplomatic.
Given these people's status—especially after seeing this morning's news revealing the woman before him as a genuine aristocrat—he couldn't afford to offend her.
"If Mr. Howard claims to have forgotten you, either it's genuine, or..." He left the sentence unfinished, but his meaning was clear.
Victoria showed no reaction, her expression unreadable.
Owen glanced at her discreetly. He suspected she knew something, but he had no proof.
He just hoped Alexander wasn't playing a dangerous game.
After all, Victoria wasn't someone to be trifled with.
"Very well, thank you, Dr. Gutierrez. I'll contact you if anything changes," Victoria said, rising to leave.
Owen followed her out.
Back in the Hospital Room
Alexander's long wait finally ended when Victoria appeared.
However, she was accompanied by an unfamiliar woman.
Everyone still in the room exchanged knowing glances, eager for the show to begin.
"Mr. Howard, I heard you're dissatisfied with Marcus's care. So I've hired a professional caregiver for you," Victoria announced. "From now on, she'll be handling all your needs. If you're still not satisfied, I can find someone else—as many as it takes until you're happy."
She smiled. "After all, professional caregivers are much more skilled at looking after patients."
After a long pause, Alexander asked, "And what about you? What will you do?"
Victoria met his gaze, her clear eyes blinking as she countered, "What do you think? Isn't it obvious?"
Alexander looked confused.
