Chapter 253 He Doesn't Seem to Want Me to Get Pregnant

Alexander watched Victoria's lips move, and a sudden wave of desire hit him. He just wanted to pull her close and kiss her.

With a soft smile, Alexander said, "Okay."

Victoria plopped down on the carpet with her laptop, setting it on the table in front of her. She grabbed a cushion from the couch and hugged it tight.

Every now and then, Alexander sneaked a glance at her. Her delicate face was unusually serious as she focused on the laptop, her fingers flying over the keyboard. He had no clue what she was typing.

The study was filled with the occasional sound of Alexander speaking in a smooth foreign language and the faint tapping of Victoria's keyboard.

The scene was surprisingly cozy. They were both busy, but could look up and see each other.

Victoria was checking out the new research materials Alan had sent. The next project at the institute was about a special virus that had popped up in a small country. They already had the virus samples.

Next up was developing new drugs, testing, clinical trials, extracting and separating drug components, and a bunch of other tedious steps.

Before they knew it, an hour had passed. Alexander had wrapped up his meeting. He looked up to see Victoria still glued to her laptop on the carpet. She didn't even notice when he walked over.

Victoria had this habit of zoning out when she was deep in thought just like what she was now, totally immersed in her work.

Alexander squinted and glanced at her laptop screen, which was filled with dense chemical symbols and formulas. He could understand each one on its own, but together, they made no sense to him.

His gaze shifted to Victoria, who was lost in her thoughts. She was wearing a white, fluffy pajama set, her smooth hair casually tied up with a rubber band, showing off her slender neck. She still had a faint scent of bath soap.

Alexander stared at her focused profile, a hint of frustration in his eyes. 'She said she wouldn't get lost in her research. Now she doesn't even notice me. She promised. If she goes back to the institute, she might forget everything she said. But I can't keep her by my side all the time.'

For the first time, Alexander felt helpless. He then sat quietly on the couch behind her for another half hour, but Victoria still didn't notice him.

Alexander pinched the bridge of his nose and checked the time. It was almost eleven.

Victoria was at a critical point in her work when she suddenly felt herself being lifted off the ground.

She let out a surprised yelp and found herself in a strong, warm embrace.

"What's wrong?" She snapped back to reality and looked at Alexander's handsome face, which was now a bit gloomy.

Alexander wouldn't scold her, but his tone was a bit unhappy. "Do you know what time it is?"

Victoria was speechless for a moment before glancing at the clock. It was exactly eleven. So late already.

"When did you finish?" Victoria asked guiltily.

"Half an hour ago," Alexander said, looking a bit frustrated.

Victoria said sheepishly, "Why didn't you call me?"

She had lost track of time while working.

Alexander let out a cold laugh. "Do I dare?"

Victoria was momentarily stunned before realizing what he meant, and she couldn't help but laugh.

She wrapped her arms around his neck, her eyes smiling, and then leaned in to kiss him.

"Don't be mad. I won't do it again," Victoria said, pouting and swaying slightly on his lap.

She only acted this way in front of him.

Alexander remained unmoved, giving her a look that seemed to say, "You think that's enough to placate me?"

Victoria had an idea and blinked her big eyes at him. "Go take a shower. I have something important to tell you later."

Alexander couldn't refuse any of Victoria's requests. He let her gently push and pull him back to their bedroom.

When Alexander came out of the bathroom, Victoria was already sitting on the bed. She waved him over, signaling him to come quickly.

As soon as Alexander sat down, she patted her lap. "Lie here."

Alexander didn't hesitate and obediently lay down, resting his head lightly on her lap.

Victoria's cool hands cupped his face as she leaned over, her eyes twinkling with a smile.

Alexander looked up, and their eyes met.

Victoria kissed his forehead first, then moved to his lips. It was their first kiss in this position.

She meant to give him a light kiss, but as she pulled away, Alexander held the back of her head and pressed his lips back to hers.

Alexander kissed her gently, prying her mouth open and taking control. Their tongues danced together passionately.

When the kiss got too intense, Alexander paused first. They buried their faces in each other's necks, gasping for air and the fragrance of each other.

Alexander's husky voice whispered in her ear, "What's that important thing you said to tell me?"

Victoria took a moment to catch her breath, then straightened up and cleared her throat. "Let's go for a health check-up tomorrow."

Alexander looked confused. "Why?"

"To prepare for pregnancy," Victoria said bluntly.

She had always thought they'd let nature take its course, but today she suddenly felt the urge to prepare for pregnancy.

Alexander was momentarily stunned, something unreadable flashing in his deep eyes. After a few seconds, he said, "No rush. Let's wait until after the wedding. Do you really want to wear a wedding dress while pregnant?"

What he said made sense to her.

Seeing her still hesitating, Alexander added, "Aren't you planning to go back to the research institute? If you get pregnant now, do you think you can go back? Even if you want to, I won't allow it. From pregnancy to childbirth and recovery, it'll take at least a year or two."

Victoria fell silent.

Her bright eyes looked at him with some confusion. "Why do I feel like you don't really want me to get pregnant?"

Alexander explained, "It's not that. How could I not want to? I dream of having a baby with you. But I'm also worried about your health. After the wedding, once you've settled back into your work at the institute, we can consider it. There's no rush."

Alexander added, "Sweetie, we're still young. There's no need to hurry. Besides, I don't want a baby to interrupt us."

Alexander's persuasion didn't have much effect; instead, it made Victoria feel even more puzzled.

Lila waved her hand in front of Victoria's face. "Darling, what are you thinking about? You seem so lost in thought."

Victoria snapped back to reality and responded, "Nothing, just something I can't figure out."

Lila asked, "What is it?"

Victoria was silent for a moment before recounting what had happened the previous night.

Lila was just as puzzled. No wonder Victoria couldn't figure it out; she couldn't either.

Then Lila subtly suggested, "Could it be that Alexander has a low sperm count?"

Victoria rolled her eyes at her and scolded, "Don't talk nonsense!"

Lila pouted. "Then it must be that he just wants to spend more intimate time with you. Alexander spoils you so much; it's understandable that he doesn't want kids right now."

Alexander had said the same thing last night. Was that really it? But Victoria still felt something was off. Maybe she was just being too sensitive.

Seeing Victoria looking so frustrated, Lila suggested, "Why don't you just start preparing for pregnancy on your own? Whether or not he gets a health check-up isn't important. Alexander probably has regular check-ups. If you want, I can ask Owen about Alexander's health for you."

Lila continued, "Besides, with your looks and intelligence, it would be a shame not to have a child to inherit your excellent genes."

Victoria's mouth twitched. 'What kind of ridiculous idea is that?'

Meanwhile, after Alexander went to the office, he still felt uneasy and called Owen. "Victoria might come to you soon to ask about my health. Don't let her find out about what she shouldn't."

Owen replied, "Don't worry. I haven't left any records at the hospital." He then added, "But you can't hide this forever. Even if Victoria isn't suspicious now, she'll find out eventually. Why not just be honest with her?"

Alexander's voice was cold and resolute, without a hint of wavering. "As I said before, unless you're 100% sure she will be safe during childbirth."

Owen fell silent. He couldn't guarantee that, so he wouldn't promise Alexander anything. After all, this was a matter of life and death.

After hanging up, Alexander asked Dylan to investigate who Victoria had met and what she had done yesterday. How did she come back with the idea of preparing for pregnancy?
