Chapter 324 I Can't Go Anymore
"Boss, the tracker shows Mrs. Howard's on the move, and fast." Quentin handed the tablet over to Alexander. A red dot zipped across the screen.
Alexander's face darkened, his voice icy. "Find out where she's headed!"
Quentin spun around to grab the laptop. In no time, he had a map up, showing Victoria's path. "Boss, looks like she's heading towards Nine Heavens Bridge, about 6,500 feet ahead. There's a river under it."
Alexander asked, "How long until she gets there?"
Quentin replied, "Three, maybe four minutes."
Meanwhile, Victoria was speeding down the road and finally spotted a car parked sideways on Nine Heavens Bridge. But it was on the opposite side.
The screech of brakes snapped Saskia out of her thoughts. She glanced out the window and saw a slim figure getting out of a car across the way. It was Victoria.
As Saskia wondered why Victoria was there, Victoria had already vaulted over the barrier and was sprinting towards her. Victoria saw Saskia in the back seat, her mouth taped shut. She tried the door, but it was locked.
Victoria pulled out her gun, ready to shoot the lock, but then remembered Saskia was inside. "Mom, don't freak out when you hear the gunshot," she shouted. Saskia nodded.
The close-range shots still made Saskia jump. Victoria yanked the door open and ripped the tape off Saskia's mouth. Tears welled up in Saskia's eyes. She had been calm, but seeing Victoria made her emotional.
Victoria didn't waste a second, untying Saskia's hands. It took less than thirty seconds. "Mom, we gotta go," Victoria said, grabbing her hand.
"I can't move," Saskia said, holding back. "When I woke up, something was tied to my foot. When I tried to move, a voice warned, 'Don't move if you don't want to die.'"
Victoria quickly checked her feet. She had missed something. Victoria bent down again. A wire was tied to Saskia's foot, leading to a small bomb under the driver's seat.
Victoria's plan to carry Saskia out was instantly ruined. Any movement would set off the bomb. Christopher left Victoria with no choice.
At that moment, Christopher watched Victoria's worried face through the car's surveillance and started laughing. He picked up his phone and made a call.
"Go ahead, the main character's here," Christopher said into the phone.
"Yes, sir."
Christopher's face twisted into a sinister grin as he watched the screen. He thought, 'The main character has arrived, and the other spectator is about to arrive as well. The timing is perfect.'
Saskia, seeing Victoria's frown, said, "Victoria, you should go. Don't worry about me." She wasn't afraid of dying, just didn't want to leave her family.
Saskia never thought she'd end up kidnapped at her age. She had no regrets in life—married a great guy, raised two awesome sons, and got a smart, beautiful daughter-in-law. Her only regret? Missing her son and daughter-in-law's wedding.
"Mom, I promised Alexander I'd get you home safe," Victoria said, bending down to untie the rope on Saskia's foot. "Don't worry, Mom, I won't let anything happen to you."
Victoria had figured out that if she found the stress point on the wire connected to the bomb, it wouldn't go off right away, giving her a chance to get Saskia out safely. But first, she had to untie the rope on Saskia's foot, which was tied to the wire.
Victoria guessed the enemy had planned for this. They'd used a special knot on the rope, which would take time to untie. She couldn't waste a second.
"When I realized I was kidnapped, I thought my husband or my son would be the first to find me," Saskia said, watching Victoria work on the knot. "I didn't expect it to be you." And Victoria was so calm under pressure. Saskia found Victoria to be very mysterious, but it didn't change how much she liked her as a daughter-in-law. In fact, she felt her son was lucky to have such a wonderful wife.
Victoria didn't tell Saskia that she was kidnapped because of her. If anything happened to Saskia, Victoria would never forgive herself.
For years, Victoria feared nothing. She had made herself strong, so she feared no one and could protect those she cared about.
Victoria never let her loved ones be endangered because of her; she would eliminate those threats in advance. But this time, no matter how careful Victoria was, mistakes could happen. So, Saskia couldn't be harmed, not just because she was good to Victoria, but because she was Alexander's mother.
When Saskia realized there was a bomb, she knew things were complicated. "Victoria, if something happens, don't worry about me. Protect yourself," Saskia said with a smile. "If you get hurt, Alexander won't forgive me."
"Mom, was Alexander naughty as a kid?" Victoria suddenly asked, knowing Saskia wanted to distract her from the tension.
"He wasn't naughty," Saskia said. "But he was always so aloof, acting mature beyond his years. With his studies and personal life, he never caused me any trouble. I wished he would, so I could feel like a mom. He was so self-disciplined that I doubted he was my own."
Victoria asked, "So, you and Dad had Landon later?"
Saskia said, "You're as smart as ever, my daughter-in-law. We didn't plan on having a second child, but taking care of Alexander was so easy that we didn't really feel like parents. So, we had Landon, who is the opposite of his brother, always causing trouble if we don't discipline him." As Saskia spoke, Victoria's hands never stopped working.
