Chapter 249 Are You Married?
Lila was floored by Owen's proposal. 'Who proposes in bed? And during sex? What was he even thinking?'
Lila's blood boiled just thinking about it. Whenever she got mad, her head felt like it was gonna explode.
Victoria, hearing the whole story, coughed a bit and then gave Lila a thumbs up with a smirk. "Well, that's one way to do it."
"Go ahead, laugh it up. I'm not embarrassed," Lila shot back, rolling her eyes. "Not everyone has a Prince Charming like Alexander."
The topic of Alexander always made Victoria's eyes light up with joy.
Lila noticed Victoria's usually cool and delicate face was now flushed, clearly showing her feelings.
Lila nudged Victoria with her shoulder. "Alright, enough with the lovey-dovey face."
Victoria smiled back at Lila, then said seriously, "Lila, I'm actually really happy right now."
Lila was a bit taken aback, but then her smile grew even wider than Victoria's.
With a teasing tone, Lila half-joked, "I can see that. Alexander's got you wrapped around his finger. If you weren't happy, it'd be a waste of all his effort. He's got you so pampered, you probably can't live without him."
Lila reached out to pinch Victoria's cheek.
Victoria swatted Lila's hand away, pretending to be annoyed. "Cut it out."
Lila quickly asked, "So, when are you guys planning to have kids? After the wedding?"
Victoria shrugged, "We'll see what happens."
Truth was, Victoria hadn't really thought about it. She and Alexander hadn't planned for a baby. But their families were eager, and Victoria had made peace with it. If she got pregnant, she'd roll with it. They weren't exactly being careful; no pills, no condoms.
Lila said, "What do you mean 'we'll see'? If you want a baby, you gotta plan for it to make sure the kid gets the best genes."
Then she added quickly, "But with your genes, the kid's gonna be awesome anyway."
Victoria just stayed quiet.
As they were chatting, Marlowe came out of the bathroom.
Both of them looked at her, and Lila asked excitedly, "Marlowe, what's the verdict? Are you pregnant?"
Marlowe looked up, her brows furrowed. She didn't need to say anything; they both guessed it.
"Really pregnant?" Lila blinked, got up, and walked over with a grin. "So I'm gonna be a big sister."
But Marlowe couldn't smile; she looked pale. She had tested three times, and twice it showed she was pregnant. But she wished it was wrong.
"It could be a false alarm. They say those tests aren't always accurate," Marlowe said, her voice shaking a bit.
"Marlowe, what if it's real?" Lila could tell Marlowe didn't want to be pregnant, and she got it. With Marlowe's situation with Grant, now wasn't the best time for a baby. But what if it was real?
Marlowe fell silent, deep in thought. She hadn't planned for this; she never thought she'd end up pregnant with Grant's kid.
Given her situation with Grant, he’d never let her keep the baby. He’d made it clear she wasn’t “worthy” of having his kid. If they hadn’t been careful all those nights over the past five years, she’d have had multiple abortions by now.
Marlowe decided to hit up a hospital to confirm things. She didn’t even dare go to the city hospital, trying to keep it on the down-low.
After a bunch of tests, the three of them waited for almost an hour for the results.
Definitely, Marlowe was pregnant.
The doctor gave her a warm smile and said, "Congrats, you're 9 weeks along."
Nine weeks meant over two months. So it wasn’t from their last romp in the apartment, but before that. But that didn’t add up. She’d taken the pill that time.
"But I took contraceptive pills," Marlowe said, freaking out a bit.
The doc stayed chill. "Pills can fail sometimes. It’s not foolproof. There’s always a chance."
Then the doc added, "You should get a prenatal checkup to make sure the baby’s okay, especially since you were on the pill."
But Marlowe asked, "Can I get an abortion?"
The doc looked a bit surprised but didn’t lose her cool. She explained, "You can, but at 9 weeks, medication isn’t recommended. You’d need surgery, which can be rough on your body. It could cause bleeding, damage to the birth canal, uterine rupture, and even amniotic fluid embolism, which can be life-threatening. Even if it goes well, your uterus might be damaged, which would make future pregnancies tough."
The doc laid out all the risks.
Marlowe stayed quiet.
The doc finally asked, "Why don’t you talk it over with your family?"
Marlowe had one more question, "I’ve been on the pill for a long time. If I keep the baby, will it be affected?"
The doc looked surprised again. "Are you married?"
Marlowe nodded.
The doc asked, "How long?"
Marlowe replied, "Five years."
The doc’s face darkened. She looked at the report, which showed it was Marlowe’s first pregnancy. "As long as there are no special issues, it shouldn’t affect the baby. You should get a checkup first."
Marlowe just said, "Thanks."
As Marlowe was about to leave, the doc spoke again, this time with a bit of anger, "How could your husband let you take the pill for so long? Do you know how much harm long-term use can do to a woman’s body? He’s really awful. How can he treat you like this?"
The doc continued, "If you don’t want the baby, I get it. A man who doesn’t care about his wife’s health is disgusting."
Marlowe was momentarily speechless.
The doc didn’t know what else to say and waved Marlowe out.
Victoria and Lila had been waiting for her outside.
Marlowe filled them in, not holding back.
Luckily, with them around, Marlowe didn’t feel so alone. At least she had someone to lean on.
