Chapter 60 Lila is Pressured to Get Married
After eating, Victoria took a stroll around Alexander's office. It was her first time there, and she hadn't really checked it out when she arrived.
Now with some free time, she could explore. As expected from the head of a top-tier family, this office was way bigger than hers. No wonder she called it a "tour." It had everything: a lounge, a kitchen, rows of bookshelves, and display cabinets full of various items.
Standing in front of a bookshelf with her hands behind her back, Victoria remarked, "The office of the head of a top-tier family is indeed different."
Alexander, lounging on a nearby sofa, laughed and said, "If you want it, I'll give it to you. After all, even I belong to you."
Victoria turned to look at him, pursed her lips, and sighed lightly, "No, managing such a large corporation would be too tough for me. I'll stick to running the business my mom left me." Then, with a mischievous glint in her eyes, she raised an eyebrow and said, "I just want you. Having you means having all of this."
Alexander chuckled and nodded, "That's quite insightful."
Victoria casually took a book from the shelf. She noticed most of the books were in foreign languages.
Flipping through it, she found it was about Averlake literary history. She wasn't fluent in Averlake but could understand some of it.
"You know Averlake?" Victoria asked, looking up at Alexander.
Alexander nodded, "I've studied it a bit."
Victoria was skeptical about his "a bit."
"Have you read all these books?" she asked, glancing around at the hundreds of books on various topics like biographies, literary history, finance, and management, in multiple languages.
"Yes," Alexander said, noticing her stunned expression. He added with a smile, "When I was a kid, I read books when I was bored. Over time, I read this many."
Victoria was silent, deeply skeptical. Did he really start reading foreign language books as a child? Could he even understand?
Alexander noticed her expression and smiled without saying anything.
Victoria hated reading. She couldn't sit still for long, but she was naturally smart and quick to learn, so she didn't need to read all the time. For that, she thanked her mom's strong genes.
She didn't plan to return to her office in the afternoon; it was already three o'clock.
"Will I be disturbing your work if I stay here?" she asked.
Alexander looked at her with indulgent tenderness and said, "Not at all. I have a meeting later, so you can wander around here."
Victoria's eyes darted around, and she tentatively asked, "Anywhere?"
"Of course," Alexander raised an eyebrow, amused. "You are my wife, after all. What do you think?"
Victoria tilted her head, thought for a couple of seconds, then grinned, "It seems you're right."
After that, Alexander headed to his meeting, and Victoria made herself at home.
Meanwhile, at the Scott family residence...
Lila sat cross-legged on the living room sofa, looking dejected. Since morning, her mom had been on her case about getting married.
Next to her was her well-dressed and well-maintained mother, Eve Clark.
"Look at this guy," Eve said, handing Lila a tablet. "Stable job, good family background, and no complicated family members."
Lila didn't even glance at it. This was the eighteenth guy her mom had shown her. She had to admire her mom's persistence and social network.
"Mom, I've already said, I..."
Eve cut her off, " 'I'm not interested in getting married right now. I want to let things happen naturally.' " Eve finished her sentence for her and then added, "I know you want things to happen naturally, but you need to meet some men first, right? If you don't know any men, how can you naturally get married?"
Lila was silent.
"Am I right?" Eve looked at her seriously, even with a loving smile.
Seeing that smile, Lila immediately felt scared. How could she say her mom was wrong? She quickly laughed and said, "Mom, please don't smile at me like that. I'm scared. You're right about everything. I completely agree."
Eve kept her loving expression and gently asked, "So, do you want to meet him?"
Lila forced a smile, "Of course, if you say I should meet him, then I should."
A loud noise suddenly rang out!
Lila instinctively shrank back.
Eve slammed the tablet onto the coffee table. The loving smile vanished, replaced by a stern look. She cleared her throat and said, "Alright, come out with me tonight. Remember to dress up nicely."
Then she stood up and walked upstairs with the grace of a queen.
Yes, Eve, her biological mom, was just that kind of person. The scariest thing wasn't making her angry; it was when she suddenly showed a loving face because you could never guess what she was planning.
She remembered when she was a kid and accidentally broke her grandfather Scott's favorite teacup. Eve had gently told her, "If you apologize to your grandfather, it will be okay."
But when they got home, Eve's attitude changed immediately. She sternly said, "I think you need a good lesson. Go to your room and copy the Scott family rules three times. You can't come out until you're done!"
She was only five years old at the time, and the Scott family rules had over a thousand words. It left her with a psychological scar.
Lila sighed deeply at the thought of tonight.
Then she took out her phone and vented in their group chat.
Lila: [I'm being taken to a blind date by my mom tonight.]
Lila: [I'm so miserable.]
Lila: [Please comfort me.]
In Jakarda City, Marlowe had just returned to her villa when her phone rang. Seeing it was a message from Lila, she replied: [Aunt Eve is taking you to a blind date?]
Lila: [Yes.]
Marlowe: [Who would've thought that even someone from the Scott family would be pressured to get married.]
