Chapter 161 A Straightforward Remark

Leonard pulled Victoria into the study, just the two of them.

Out in the living room, it was just Alan, Billy, and the lone wolf, Alexander.

Even though this wasn't his turf, Alexander had this natural boss vibe.

The second Leonard and Victoria left, he let that vibe loose.

Sitting there, he still gave off this "I'm in charge" energy.

Billy felt super awkward like he was sitting on a bed of nails.

Not wanting to get caught up in the weird tension between Alan and Alexander, he made up an excuse to bounce. He'd done his part anyway.

Alexander kicked back on the sofa, looking all chill, like he owned the place.

His long fingers casually rested on his knee, his thumb playing with the ring on his index finger.

What seemed like a random move was more like a statement.

Alan had noticed the rings on both their hands earlier. Seeing the ring on Victoria's hand felt like a punch to the gut.

Right now, he was feeling pretty torn up.

"Mr. Howard, you know Victoria well?" Alan couldn't hold it in and broke the awkward silence.

He looked down for a few seconds, then back up.

He saw a smirk on Alexander's lips, with a mysterious glint in his eyes. "She's my wife. How could I not know her? We cuddle up every night. I know her inside and out. What do you wanna know more of?"

He put extra emphasis on certain words.

Alan went quiet for a moment.

Then he said, "Do you have to twist my words?"

Alexander raised an eyebrow and asked, "So what are you getting at? Or are you trying to say you know her better? That you're a better match for her?"

Alan didn't get flustered. He was about to say, "I do know her well," when Alexander cut him off.

"No matter how well you know her, you'll always just be her friend. She'll always be my wife. It's clear she only sees you as a friend."

Alexander's tone suddenly turned icy.

His sharp words felt like a knife to Alan's heart, causing a wave of pain. He couldn't deny what Alexander said.

He'd known her for six years and fell for her at first sight. But all these years, Victoria only saw him as a friend, or a brother, which is why he never dared to confess, not wanting to mess up what they had.

But hearing her introduction today, he deeply regretted his past choices.

If he'd spoken up earlier, she might've been his wife by now.

Upstairs in the study, Leonard asked, "Victoria, you've been chilling for two years now. Isn't it time to get back to the research institute?"

Leonard, pushing seventy, was in great shape thanks to years of focusing on wellness.

Victoria, on the other hand, looked lazy and indifferent. "Hasn't everything been fine without me these past two years?"

Leonard went quiet.

He knew she'd say that, so he had his response ready. "Yeah, but you're the backbone. Since you joined, you've been the rock for everyone, and they look up to you. Since you took a break, they've been lost, looking all listless and uninterested. This isn't good for the institute."

Victoria stayed silent.

The corners of her mouth and eyes twitched slightly.

She didn't think it was necessary to make her sound so impressive.

She said, "But I don't wanna go back right now."

She flat-out refused.

Leonard sighed, stayed quiet for a bit, and didn't push it. He actually had two important things to discuss with her.
