Chapter 298 The Gift
Julia absolutely hated being ignored by Victoria.
Julia might have been influenced by Clara to dislike Victoria, but the main reason was that she herself already disliked Victoria, to put it bluntly, out of jealousy. Whenever Victoria was around, all eyes were on her.
Julia thought that in terms of family background, education, and talent, Victoria couldn't compare to her, yet Victoria always stole her spotlight.
Even though Victoria was recently outed as a scientific genius and a famous composer, Julia brushed it off. Deep down, she always saw Victoria as beneath her.
Julia turned to Claire Savoy with a sweet smile, "Claire, this is Lucas' fiancée, the one he was engaged to since childhood."
Victoria didn't know Claire personally; she had just looked up her info and seen some photos.
Julia kept going, her tone dripping with sarcasm, "But now she's the wife of the head of the Howard family. After breaking off the engagement, she immediately married Alexander."
This was what really got under Julia's skin. She couldn't wrap her head around how a guy as amazing as Alexander could fall for Victoria.
Claire didn't react much. She just thought Victoria's situation was kinda like her own. She was more curious about the heavily wrapped Sarah standing next to Victoria. Those eyes looked way too familiar.
Julia knew Victoria always acted indifferent towards her. Without a response from Victoria, Julia was fuming but couldn't blow up in public, especially with Claire there.
But when she saw Sarah all wrapped up, she couldn't help but sneer, "All wrapped up like that, you think you're a superstar? Or are you hiding from something shady you've done?"
She struck a self-righteous pose.
Victoria knew exactly what Julia was getting at. Julia was a celebrity herself, but she never disguised herself when she went out, always dressing to turn heads.
Victoria could tolerate Julia's insults and chose not to argue with someone she considered unintelligent, but Julia shouldn't have dragged Sarah into the conversation.
Victoria squinted slightly, a faint smile on her lips, her voice icy. "Are we close to you? What gives you the right to judge us?"
Julia was momentarily stunned. Victoria looked her up and down and then said, "Dressing like that, you must have some issues with the world, huh?"
Victoria always thought Julia wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, and she was right.
Julia was completely baffled by Victoria's words.
Just then, the elevator door opened. Without a word, Victoria pulled Sarah inside. Nancy and Bella took another elevator.
Once inside, Nancy quickly hit the close button. As the doors shut, Julia realized that Victoria was insulting her outfit!
She was livid, stomping her foot in anger and shouting Victoria's name through gritted teeth.
Then her foot hurt; she forgot she was wearing high heels.
Claire, standing nearby, was seeing this side of Julia for the first time.
Since she remarried Algernon Hughes, and Julia was around the same age as her biological daughter, Claire had always been extra caring and affectionate towards Julia.
Julia had always been well-behaved and sensible, but now she was acting out.
Claire asked, "Julia, are you okay?"
Julia snapped back to reality and immediately put on her usual gentle smile. "I'm fine. Let's go. We still need to pick a gift for Grandpa."
She didn't want to say more, and Claire didn't push it.
Claire couldn't shake the image of the girl with those familiar eyes.
Victoria and Sarah acted like nothing had happened, not even mentioning the incident.
Sarah was new to the area, so Victoria had to lead the way.
But Victoria wasn't exactly a local expert either. Luckily, Lila had brought her here a few times, so she had a rough idea of where to go.
Victoria took her straight to a watch store.
Sarah asked, "Babe, how'd you know I wanted a watch?"
Victoria grinned and teased, "Because I can read your mind."
Sarah laughed, "That's so you, always knowing everything."
She knew Victoria wasn't one to joke around much. Victoria was trying to lighten the mood, and Sarah played along.
Sarah said, "Let's pick one quick so we can get home before Alexander starts wondering where you are."
She linked arms with Victoria, and they walked in together.
The store clerk greeted them right away, "Welcome. Are you looking for men's or women's watches?"
Sarah replied, "Men's."
The clerk nodded, "Alright, please follow me."
They browsed for a while but didn't find anything that stood out.
Finally, the clerk said, "Miss, we have a limited edition men's watch, but it hasn't arrived at our store yet."
Sarah asked, "Do you have a picture? I'd like to see it."
"Yes, please wait in the lounge area, and I'll bring it to you," the clerk replied.
"Okay."
They had just sat down when the clerk returned with a tablet.
She handed it to Sarah, "Here are the pictures. Please take a look."
Sarah said, "Thanks."
As she flipped through the images, the clerk explained the watch's design and the designer.
"This watch is the latest design by DL's designer this year, limited to ten pieces worldwide. We have the last one available," the clerk said.
After browsing through so many options and finding none that she liked, Sarah's eyes lit up when she saw this one.
Sarah could totally see Seraphim wearing this watch. It was perfect for him.
So, she said, "Alright, I'll take this one!"
The clerk was surprised by her quick decision. She had been trying to upsell, as this watch was way more expensive than the others.
The clerk didn't mean to underestimate Sarah; she was just worried about an awkward situation.
She put on a professional smile and explained, "Miss, according to our policy, you need to make a down payment first. When the watch arrives, we'll deliver it to you, and you can pay the balance then."
Sarah looked up slightly. "No need, I'll pay the full amount now. When it arrives, just notify me, and I'll send someone to pick it up."
Two minutes later, the clerk watched them leave, still in a daze.
She had only been working for a month and had never encountered a customer who spent ten million dollars without batting an eye.
Her colleagues looked at her with envy. Ten million dollars in sales was like half a year's worth of work for the entire team.
One coincidence often led to another.
Before leaving, Sarah went to the restroom. As she opened the door, she saw Claire standing inside. Sarah froze for a second, then instinctively turned to leave.
But Claire called out, "Sarah, is that you?"
Sarah instinctively stopped in her tracks, unaware that Claire behind her had trembled and her eyes had instantly reddened.
Claire hadn't held out much hope, but Sarah stopping confirmed it was her.
Claire hadn't missed the surprise and resentment in Sarah's eyes.
After a few seconds of silence, Claire's voice sounded again, "I'm your mom. Are you okay?"
The moment Sarah heard the word "mom," it felt like a swarm of ants was gnawing at her heart, the pain so intense that she nearly forgot to breathe.
