Chapter 288 Victoria's Sweet Nothings
Upon exiting, Victoria headed straight to the lounge in the tea room.
Seeking out Dylan was merely an excuse. What weighed heavily on her mind now was Gideon's recent mention of Organization 103. Why'd they bring it up? She had to dig into it. No way did she want Alexander getting mixed up with that group.
She quickly made a call. It rang for a bit before someone picked up.
Annoyed, Ellington grumbled, "Who the hell's waking me up? You got a death wish or something?"
Victoria frowned and snapped, "It's me!"
Ellington, half-asleep, jolted awake at the sound of her voice. His eyes popped open, and he sat up in bed. After a few seconds, he croaked, "What's up?"
Victoria asked, "How's the investigation going?"
Ellington knew exactly what she meant. He scratched his messy hair and said, "It's been less than a week. If those people were easy to find, you wouldn't need me."
Victoria stayed quiet. He had a point, so she didn't argue.
She switched gears, "Besides their new base, I need to know what they've been up to lately. That shouldn't be too hard for you, right? Just a small favor."
Ellington suddenly asked, "Are you gonna pay me?"
Victoria shot back, "Would you even dare to take it if I did?"
Ellington was stumped. Some old memories came rushing back. Yeah, he really couldn't take her money.
Then he remembered something, and his mood darkened. He asked, "Were you serious about what you said before you left last time?"
Anyone who knew Victoria knew she didn't joke about stuff like that, but he wanted to be sure. She didn't follow his line of thought and asked, "What did I say?"
Ellington asked, "Do you really have a husband?"
Without missing a beat, she retorted, "Do I look like someone who jokes around?"
Ellington felt crushed. Knowing her, he still asked, which was just self-torture.
"When did this happen? Why didn't you tell me? Don't you want my wedding gift? Are you really that considerate, saving me money?" Ellington rattled off in one breath.
Even though he felt crappy, he kept his tone light and playful, as usual.
Victoria answered his last question directly. "Don't worry, I won't save you money. The wedding's in March, and you'll get an invite."
Ellington blurted out, "Who knows if it'll go smoothly? Dealing with Organization 103 is already a handful." He didn't mean any harm; he was just venting.
Victoria went silent. Before she could blow up, Ellington tried to explain, "I..."
But she hung up before he could finish. He really didn't mean to say that.
He liked Victoria, but he never told her how he felt because he knew she saw him as just a friend. Given her personality, if he confessed, things would get awkward, and she might start avoiding him.
He once asked her, "What if I confessed to you one day?"
Without missing a beat, she replied, "I'd get you a brain scan to see if something's wrong."
Classic Victoria! Then she added calmly, "Liking me isn't a good idea. I'm used to being alone."
He got the message: liking her wouldn't get him anywhere, and they might not even stay friends.
So he just said, "Just kidding. Even being friends with you is a hassle. I hate troublesome things."
After that, he never brought it up again.
Victoria hung up on Ellington, not because she was mad. She wanted to argue, but his last comment hit home. Dealing with Organization 103 was indeed a real pain.
She didn't have a foolproof plan yet. She was confident, but she couldn't guarantee success.
She'd seen and experienced the brutal ways of Organization 103. Plus, it seemed like Alexander was getting involved.
The next day, after breakfast, Alexander took Victoria out. Last night, Alexander, with a touch of mystery, told her that he would take her to a certain place today.
In the car, she leaned towards Alexander, staring at his handsome face, and asked, "Where are you taking me?"
Alexander's eyes sparkled as he smiled. "What, afraid I'll sell you?"
She replied, "Not at all. Besides, anyone who can afford me probably hasn't been born yet." She rolled her eyes playfully and smiled. "Would you sell me?"
Alexander reached out to rub her head, gently pushed her back into her seat, and said, "Sit properly."
He never hesitated to show his love for her, saying, "I love you too much to ever sell you."
Victoria beamed with a happy smile. Suddenly, a thought crossed her mind, and she turned to look at him. Alexander, thinking she had something to say, asked, "What's wrong?"
She raised an eyebrow and asked, "Do you know where the most beautiful light in the world is?"
Alexander played along, "Where?"
She leaned in slightly and whispered, "In my eyes. Look and see."
Alexander focused on her lively almond-shaped eyes. Her eyes were indeed beautiful, reflecting his face. He understood; she meant to say he was the most beautiful light in the world.
Seeing him staring at her without speaking, Victoria asked again, "Isn't it beautiful?"
Alexander let out a deep, rich laugh. "Yes, it's beautiful. It belongs only to you."
To Victoria, Alexander was indeed a special light. He brought her a warmth that only a home could provide. He warmed her heart in a way no one else could.
They chatted along the way. Dylan and Marcus in the front had to listen to their sweet talk the whole way, but there was nothing they could do. Dylan thought he should have switched with Quentin earlier.
As they chatted, they arrived at their destination. Victoria had noticed earlier that the car was heading into the mountains, but since the road was smooth, she didn't ask anything. But...
