Chapter 334 Why Not Take Her Along?
"Lila, what's up with Victoria?" Marlowe asked, trying to get some answers since she couldn't reach Victoria herself.
"How did you find out?" Lila replied, a bit surprised.
Lila had kept the news from Marlowe to avoid stressing her out, especially since she was pregnant. Running into Grant would be a nightmare.
Lila's question was her way of confirming the situation. Marlowe, clearly worried, asked, "How's Victoria doing? I want to go see her."
Lila filled Marlowe in, mentioning that Victoria had already woken up. Hearing Lila's story, Marlowe's heart pounded. Explosions, fires, and jumping into a river—Victoria actually went through all those dangerous situations.
"You shouldn't go. You're pregnant, and Alexander is with her all the time. There's no need for us to be there," Lila said firmly.
Knowing Victoria was okay, Marlowe felt a lot better, especially with Alexander by her side. "Victoria's fine, just a bit weak. She'll probably have to spend Christmas in the hospital," Lila added.
Marlowe still felt uneasy. "Is Victoria really okay?"
Lila reassured her, "She's really fine. When Victoria wakes up, I'll have her call you back. Marlowe, don't worry, everything's fine." Lila comforted Marlowe, almost forgetting how panicked she had been when she first heard about Victoria's serious injury.
Back then, Lila had Owen with her, which made it a bit easier. But Marlowe was alone now. So, Lila hadn't dared to tell Marlowe from the start.
Plus, Alexander had kept the news under wraps, so no media dared to report it. Thinking about this, Lila wondered who told Marlowe.
"Marlowe, you haven't told me, who told you about this?" Lila asked.
Marlowe steadied her emotions and said, "I saw it in your News Feed."
Lila was confused and thought, 'What? I don't remember doing that. Who would post it?'
"Lila?" Marlowe called out when she didn't hear Lila respond.
Lila was opening her Facebook, saying, "Marlowe, wait a moment, let me check." As soon as she clicked on the Facebook app icon, she was prompted that she had been logged out.
Lila quickly logged back in and opened her News Feed. Sure enough, it was 'Lila' who posted it. A new update from just over half an hour ago.
"Marlowe, it isn't me. I was logged out of Facebook, and I just logged back in," Lila explained. "And this news post is set to be visible only to you."
Marlowe was puzzled. "Then who did it?"
The two were silent for a moment, and Lila asked, "Marlowe, who do you think wants to see you the most right now?"
Marlowe didn't need to think; she knew the answer instantly. Lila hadn't expected Grant to be so sneaky and relentless.
Meanwhile, "Are you sure your plan will work this time?" Grant looked skeptically at his assistant, Kevin. Kevin rubbed his nose, feeling a bit guilty. He wasn't sure either. Grant had given Kevin a tough task. Kevin had to find a subtle way to let Marlowe know about Victoria's accident without revealing that it was intentional. And they couldn't let the news of Victoria's injury leak to the public.
So Kevin came up with this underhanded tactic. He hired a hacker to temporarily hack Lila's Facebook and posted a news item visible only to Marlowe. As usual, Kevin's plans failed.
Grant hadn't expected that almost everyone close to him was helping Marlowe avoid him, to the point that he didn't even know he had become a father when the baby was born. But that was a story for another time.
Thalia had slept through the night. After being taken away by Eric, she suddenly felt unwell and passed out.
When Thalia woke up again, it was already the next morning. She looked around the unfamiliar environment, propped herself up on the bed, and slowly sat up.
As soon as she sat up, a servant entered the room and immediately walked over. "Mrs. Kennedy, you're awake?"
Thalia looked at the unfamiliar person in front of her and asked, "Where is this?"
The servant replied, "Mrs. Kennedy, this is Wind Sleep Villa."
Thalia frowned slightly. She had never heard of this place, and it definitely wasn't Victoria or Alexander's home.
Five minutes later, in the living room downstairs, Thalia sat on the sofa, staring at the familiar face of the person in the wheelchair in front of her.
It was no exaggeration to say that Thalia, who had lived for sixty or seventy years, was experiencing horror for the first time. If Thalia didn't have a strong heart, she might have been scared to death by now.
"Are you really Esme?" Thalia's hands trembled on her lap, and she started stumbling over her words. This was simply too absurd, too unbelievable.
A person who had been 'dead' in Thalia's mind for over twenty years suddenly appeared alive in front of her. How could she not be shocked and horrified? It was even hard to accept this fact.
Esme sat in the wheelchair, a small blanket covering her legs, her hands clasped together on her lap. Esme was so thin that a gust of wind could blow her away.
But it didn't affect Esme's demeanor. She always gave off an impression of competence and coolness, paired with an elegant gentleness. "It's me, Thalia," her voice was somewhat hoarse.
Thalia didn't speak for a long time. Thalia knew quite a bit about Esme and the Kennedy family. Although they kept it from her, Thalia wasn't foolish and was already somewhat aware.
Thalia knew Esme had a purpose for marrying into the Kennedy family and that Esme was already pregnant when she married her son.
But at that time, the Kennedy family was just a small family, not even close to being a prestigious one. Thalia was puzzled about what Esme saw in the Kennedy family. Esme never revealed the reason.
The Kennedy family's business had flourished because of Esme's presence. In just three years, the Kennedy Group became well-known, and the Kennedy family's status in Ridgefield rose steadily, establishing a firm foothold.
"Thalia, thank you for taking care of Victoria all these years." Esme wasn't an ungrateful person. She knew that in the Kennedy family, only Thalia genuinely cared for her daughter.
Thalia slowly accepted the news that Esme was still alive and sighed. "Victoria is my granddaughter." In other words, taking care of Victoria was her duty.
Esme said, "Thalia, you know that Victoria is not biologically related to you."
Thalia smiled. "So what? Victoria has called me grandma for over twenty years."
Sometimes, blood relations didn't matter. Some people, even with blood relations, might not genuinely care for her, while those without blood relations might be the most sincere.
Esme didn't say anything. She knew Thalia genuinely loved Victoria. Thalia looked at her and asked, "Why didn't you take Victoria with you back then?"
Since Esme was still alive, if she had taken Victoria with her, Victoria wouldn't have had to suffer so much. Thalia couldn't imagine how Victoria would feel knowing her mother was still alive, but her first reaction definitely wouldn't be happiness.
Esme didn't answer her. The entire living room fell into silence.
At the hospital.
Victoria slept until twelve-thirty in the afternoon. She opened her eyes, adjusted a bit, and slightly turned to see Alexander in a blue suit sitting on the diagonal sofa.
Leaning against the back of the sofa, his legs crossed, a blue folder on his lap, he was intently reading the document in his hands. A ray of sunlight refracted through the window behind him, casting a golden glow around him.
Alexander's chiseled features came into her view. It was so good to see Alexander again. Victoria was actually scared; she seemed to cherish her life more and more, perhaps because she had someone on her mind.
Victoria had only looked for a few seconds when Alexander sensed her gaze. He looked up at her, and their eyes met. He closed the document and walked towards her.
