Chapter 359 Spit Out the Money
"Mrs. Howard, Mr. Taylor is in the shower." Betty's voice came through the phone.
Victoria wasn't surprised that Betty answered. Besides Betty, no other woman was close enough to Thomas to answer his phone.
Victoria said, "It's fine; I can talk to you."
Betty was puzzled.
Victoria got straight to the point. "Earlier, Alexander asked Heaven's Net to find me. Did you take a lot of money from him? I remember telling you not to disclose my whereabouts to anyone, which means Heaven's Net shouldn't have taken the job. So why did you take so much money from Alexander?"
Betty was momentarily stunned. "Mrs. Howard, you need to ask..."
Victoria interrupted her, "Betty, don't tell me you don't know?"
Betty could hear the coldness in her tone. After all, she knew Victoria's personality to some extent.
"Mrs. Howard, Mr. Taylor didn't want us to tell you," Betty said, wondering if this counted as betraying Thomas.
"Why?" Victoria asked.
Betty was silent for a few seconds before speaking, "Mr. Taylor said if he didn't take the job, they would think Heaven's Net had something to hide and was afraid to take it."
Victoria was speechless. "Thomas took the job but didn't provide any useful information. Doesn't he realize he's damaging his and Heaven's Net's reputation?"
Betty said, "Thomas said money is more important; reputation doesn't matter."
Victoria suddenly remembered what Caleb had said in the car tonight.
She asked, "Are you guys really bankrupt? When did Thomas become so desperate for money?"
Betty was at a loss for words; she didn't know how to answer.
Just then, Thomas came out of the bathroom.
"Who's on the phone?" Thomas asked when he saw Betty holding his phone.
Thomas was wearing a bathrobe, loosely tied at the chest, revealing a stretch of toned skin, with water droplets still dripping from his hair.
Betty had seen this scene many times and was used to it.
She averted her eyes and handed the phone over. "Mr. Taylor, it's Victoria."
Thomas had never been shy about such things in front of Betty; he was always straightforward.
Perhaps it had become a habit for Thomas.
Thomas took the phone, put it to his ear, and walked towards the floor-to-ceiling window. "Victoria, what's up?"
Betty watched his straight back and thought Thomas would have to return the money he took.
After all, the person on the other end of the line was no ordinary person.
Five minutes later, Thomas hung up the phone, turned to her, and instructed, "Have someone return every penny we took from Alexander."
Betty nodded and left.
The next day.
Early in the morning, Dylan arrived at the main building.
"What's up?" Alexander had just returned from the gym and saw Dylan standing in the middle of the living room, frowning.
Dylan turned and saw Alexander walking in, dressed in workout clothes.
"Mr. Howard, we just got word from Mystic Hall that the money we paid Heaven's Net was returned in full this morning."
Alexander raised an eyebrow. "Why?"
Dylan replied, "They said they didn't get the job done, so they had no reason to keep the money."
Alexander was silent for a moment. "Got it."
Dylan, still puzzled, asked, "Mr. Howard, don't you think this is strange?"
"How so?" Alexander asked calmly.
Dylan said, "Given Heaven's Net's usual behavior, how could they return the money so easily, and in full? It's quite odd."
Alexander remained unperturbed and nodded in agreement.
Dylan asked, "Should we investigate to avoid any traps?"
Alexander replied without hesitation, "No need. Since they returned it, we'll keep it."
With that, he headed upstairs.
When Alexander returned to the bedroom, he glanced at Victoria, who was still asleep.
Some things didn't need investigating.
A little thought would reveal the truth.
They had discussed this last night, and today the money was returned. Only a few people were in the car.
It seemed Victoria had many secrets and could even persuade Heaven's Net.
Alexander smiled and then turned to the bathroom.
At breakfast, Alexander casually mentioned, "I won't be home for a while; I have to go to the office. Stay home and wait for me."
Victoria took a sip of her porridge and mumbled a response.
"When will you be back?" she asked.
"I'll be back for lunch," Alexander said.
She quickly replied, "Don't bother coming back and forth. I'll bring lunch to the office and eat with you."
Alexander looked up at her and said, "Alright, let Kimberly take you. Don't drive yourself."
Victoria nodded. "Got it."
Before leaving, Alexander reminded Victoria to take her medicine, not to move around too much, and not to run off, treating her like a child.
At noon, Victoria went to deliver lunch to Alexander as promised.
After lunch, Alexander went to a meeting without taking a break.
Victoria didn't stay at Vertex Holdings Group either.
"Mrs. Howard, are we heading back to Serenity Grove Manor now?" Kimberly asked, looking at Victoria in the back seat.
Victoria looked at her and said, "Kimberly, how do I usually treat you?"
Kimberly replied, "Very well."
Victoria smiled, "Then get out of the car and find somewhere to walk around."
Kimberly was stunned. "Mrs. Howard, are you going to drive yourself?"
Victoria nodded.
"No way," Kimberly said, alarmed. "If Mr. Howard finds out, I'm done for, Mrs. Howard."
