Chapter 342 Go Ahead, I'll Reimburse You
"What's so great about it?" Mason had just finished talking when Grant suddenly asked.
Mason thought back, "Back then, the number of people chasing Marlowe could wrap around our school ten times, but..."
"But what?" Grant turned slightly to look at him.
"Marlowe didn't go for any of them," Mason said. "Later, I heard that Marlowe told every guy who tried that she already had someone in her heart and wouldn't marry anyone else."
Grant felt a weird jolt in his chest. Marlowe had someone in her heart back then? Who was it?
Grant asked, "Who?"
"I don't know, Grant. You could ask Lila. She knows more than I do," Mason passed the buck to Lila.
Lila sneaked over to Meadowview Villa, grabbed something, and left. When she got to the Scott Villa, it was exactly six o'clock.
She picked up a fancy bag from the seat and got out of the car, heading straight to Caspian's study. Even Grant, who was chilling on the living room sofa, got totally ignored by her.
Grant watched her sneak upstairs towards Caspian's study, squinting slightly. The pattern on the bag she was carrying and the signature logo on it seemed familiar; Grant felt like he had seen it somewhere before.
Suddenly, Grant's eyes darkened. Wasn't that the takeout bag from the place Kevin often ordered from? Each of their bags had a different chibi-style drawing, like a little scene or story.
He frowned. Kevin said Rihegde didn't have any branches. So why was Lila carrying a takeout bag from that place? Besides, why would Lila bring it to Caspian?
In the study.
Lila said, "Grandpa, I'm here."
Caspian was standing with one hand behind his back, in front of a large mahogany desk, about to write.
Hearing the voice, Caspian slightly raised his eyes to look at Lila, then put down his pen and said happily, "Lila, you're here."
"Grandpa, you really haven't aged a bit. Your writing is amazing! It's priceless!" Lila walked over and immediately praised him.
Caspian, wearing reading glasses, glanced at her. "You little girl, you have a way with words, but you always lie. I haven't even started writing a single word."
Lila reacted quickly and didn't feel embarrassed. She walked over and hugged Caspian's arm, saying, "I don't need to see it to know. I've been watching you since I was little. How is that lying? Anyway, in my heart, your writing is the best."
"Alright," Caspian interrupted her, "Show me what Marlowe asked you to bring."
Lila immediately opened the bag and took out the contents. She left as soon as she got the item. Mainly because she was afraid of being exposed and seen by Grant's people.
Lila took out an old wooden box. "Grandpa, what is this?" She looked up at Caspian's face and noticed something was off.
Downstairs, Grant called Kevin. Kevin was at home with his family, getting ready for Christmas dinner. Seeing his boss's call, his heart sank. Would he need to go out on Christmas?
Although he was reluctant, Kevin didn't hesitate and answered immediately. "Hello, Mr. Scott."
"What was the name of the restaurant you used to order from?" Grant's deep, resonant voice sounded.
Kevin didn't react for a moment, but a few seconds later, he understood. "Mr. Scott, it's a private kitchen, not a famous restaurant," Kevin said.
He didn't know why Grant was suddenly asking about this. Fortunately, Kevin had prepared an explanation in advance.
There was silence on the other end for a few seconds before he asked again, "Are you sure?"
A chill ran down Kevin's spine; uncertainty began to creep in. "Mr. Scott, I..."
Before Kevin could finish, Grant's deep voice sounded again. "Kevin, I'm giving you one more chance!"
Kevin didn't dare to speak. Did he have to be so sharp?
"Unless you want to go through training after the holidays!" Grant suddenly added.
"Mr. Scott, I don't want to," he replied quickly this time.
Grant said, "Speak!"
"Well, Mr. Scott, it is a private kitchen, but the owner is kinda special." Kevin was really freaked out. Before, Grant didn't suspect anything, so he could get away with it, but now he didn't get why this was suddenly a big deal.
He gritted his teeth and said, "It's Mrs. Marlowe Scott."
Grant was stunned. Even though he had his suspicions, hearing it confirmed was still a shock.
After Kevin finished talking, there was silence on the other end. Grant didn't hang up, and Kevin didn't dare to either.
After what felt like forever, Grant's voice came through, "Why didn't you say this earlier?"
Kevin felt wronged. "Mrs. Marlowe Scott didn't want me to. She said you wouldn't want to eat her cooking. To avoid wasting food, she asked me to keep it a secret."
Grant snarled, "No year-end bonus for you next year!"
Kevin panicked. "No, Mr. Scott, I..."
Kevin stood there dumbfounded, staring at the hung-up phone, feeling grieved. His first 'gift' of the new year was the announcement: no year-end bonus next year.
Cleveland Clinic.
Alexander agreed to take Victoria out, bringing her to dine at Howard Villa. He only consented after getting Owen's approval and ensuring a series of checks and preparations were meticulously completed.
"Be careful not to touch the wound. Everything else is not a big issue, but she can't catch a cold. Victoria's constitution is weak now and she can easily get sick," Owen advised.
Hearing that she could go out, Victoria's delicate face lit up with a big smile. Dylan and the others arranged everything according to Alexander's instructions.
Alexander made sure Victoria was bundled up in numerous layers of clothing. Victoria sat in the wheelchair, looked down at herself, and then looked up at Alexander. "Honey, isn't this a bit much?"
Alexander squinted slightly, and she gave in. She thought, 'Fine, I'll wear it. As long as I can go out.'
"Boss, the car is downstairs." Dylan knocked and walked in. Alexander responded and then pushed Victoria out of the ward.
In the car, Dylan and Marcus both wished her "Merry Christmas." Victoria was already in a good mood, and since it was Christmas, she gave Dylan and the others a big cash gift each.
Alexander watched her transfer money on her phone, raised an eyebrow, and teased, "Victoria, you're being quite generous?"
"Why does that sound so off?" Victoria frowned slightly and gave him a sidelong glance. "Are you saying I'm usually stingy?"
Alexander chuckled lightly, didn't deny or confirm, but said, "You can give as much as you want; I'll reimburse you."
Victoria's eyes lit up for a moment. "Really?"
Alexander didn't miss the sparkle in her eyes. He smiled slightly, his Adam's apple moved, and a low response came from his throat.
The two in the front seats didn't understand what the couple in the back were talking about. The only thing they understood was that Alexander and Victoria were flirting again.
At that moment, both Dylan and Marcus's phones buzzed. Marcus was driving and couldn't check his phone, but Dylan, in the passenger seat, immediately took out his phone. It was a bank deposit notification.
Dylan glanced at it, and his eyes almost popped out. Dylan looked at it several times, rubbed his eyes, and confirmed he wasn't seeing things or miscounting—six zeros. Who transferred a million dollars to him?
The message showed it was from a private account, no name. Then, Victoria's voice came from the back. "Dylan, don't get too emotional."
Dylan looked at the rearview mirror, met Victoria's gaze, and instantly understood. "Thank you, Mrs. Howard," Dylan said. Marcus still didn't know what was going on.
"Do a good job, and the next gift will be even grander. After all, someone is reimbursing," Victoria said with a smile, then turned her gaze back to Alexander. "Right, Alexander?"
Marcus got it.
