Chapter 43 So It Was You
Victoria spotted a surveillance camera nearby and said, "Driving in here will tip them off."
Lila noticed it too and remembered the alley they had just sneaked through, which had no cameras. She thought, 'Classic Victoria, always so careful.'
Meanwhile, the top floor of the building had just one resident. The room was dark, with curtains blocking the light. A single yellow lamp and a computer screen lit up the space.
A disheveled man lounged on the sofa, scrolling through the news on his phone about the fake Starry perfume scandal by Horizon Group. The phone's light highlighted his tired, sinister face with dark circles and bloodshot eyes. He grinned wickedly and muttered, "That's what you get for messing with her!"
He didn't notice the two figures on the surveillance screen behind him.
Soon, a knock on the door startled him. He sat up, eyeing the door suspiciously.
The person outside knocked again and said in a low voice, "Hello, anyone home? I'm from the neighborhood office. We're here to discuss the demolition schedule."
Victoria and Lila waited but got no response. They exchanged glances and stayed quiet.
Inside, the man hesitated. Only when he heard footsteps leaving did he cautiously unlock the door. As soon as he cracked it open, it was pushed wide, making him stumble back.
Light flooded the dark room, and he shielded his eyes. Victoria stepped in, wrinkling her nose at the musty smell. She scanned the nearly empty living room: a few takeout boxes, a sofa, and a computer desk showing surveillance footage.
Lila, who had pretended to leave, came back in, pinching her nose. "What's that smell? It's awful."
She saw the man in boxers and a tank top. "Ethan?"
Ethan Powell looked shocked to see Victoria and Lila at his door.
"So it's you," Victoria said coldly, staring him down.
Ethan's face twisted. "Yeah, it's me. So what?"
Victoria cut to the chase. "Why did you have those girls slander Starry's products?"
Ethan let out a creepy laugh. Lila felt uneasy, especially in the cold, dark room with all the curtains drawn.
