Chapter 53 Do you think you deserve to be happy?

Marlowe hadn't talked to anyone in five years, so she was really enjoying her chat with Victoria and Lila.

"My mom left me the company, mainly to create a perfume brand. Silver Screen Studios came later," Victoria explained.

Marlowe, being sharp, realized Victoria's mom had passed away and didn't press further.

"I've always loved Starry perfumes. I've used them for ages and think the perfumer is brilliant. Each scent is unique, not too strong, and leaves a lasting impression. They make you feel like you're in another world," Marlowe said, genuinely praising the Starry brand.

Lila's smile widened, and she raised an eyebrow at Marlowe. "Want to meet the perfumer?"

Marlowe, flattered, asked, "Can I?"

She really wanted to meet the person behind those amazing perfumes.

"It's Victoria," Lila said playfully.

Marlowe was stunned, staring at Victoria and Lila in shock.

To them, Marlowe's reaction was both funny and endearing. They always saw her as quiet and graceful, never making such exaggerated expressions.

After a while, Marlowe finally said, "Am I dreaming?"

Meanwhile, Alexander brought up a name no one dared to mention, a taboo for Grant.

"Five years, and you still can't let go of Abigail?" Alexander sipped his drink and casually looked at Grant, who sat upright.

The other three turned to Grant. His sharp features grew colder, his eyes filled with a chilling aura. He was truly emotionless.

Grant let out a cold laugh. "Do you think Marlowe's paid enough for her sins?"

Whenever he thought of his lost lover and child, his hatred for Marlowe deepened.

And tonight, she had the nerve to refuse to sit next to him. Just because he left her downstairs, she degraded herself to disgust him? He must have been too kind to her lately.

Alexander pondered for a few seconds and said, "Just don't regret it."

Only Alexander dared to say such things. The other three didn't want to get involved, so they just listened.

Grant's face remained cold. Regret? No way.

When Victoria and Alexander got back to North Courtyard, it was already 9:30 PM.

As soon as she entered, she got a message from Lila saying she was home. It was in the group chat they made tonight.

She replied: [We just got home too.]

Lila quickly responded: [Didn't expect Alexander to help you with your bath.]

Victoria half-lay on the sofa, staring at Lila's message for a few seconds before replying: [If you're so envious, get yourself a boyfriend.]

Lila: [Darling, you've changed. You don't love me anymore. You're actually talking back to me now. You weren't like this before.]

Meanwhile, in the car, Marlowe felt a cold, eerie vibe. Her phone kept buzzing in her bag. She never thought it would go off so much. She remembered the group chat they made tonight and, ignoring Grant, took out her phone.

Sure enough, her Facebook inbox was flooded with messages from the new group, and someone had mentioned her.

She saw about a dozen messages. Victoria asked if she was home. Marlowe replied: [Not home yet. Rihegde is a bit far from Jakarda City. I'll be home around ten.]

Lila: [Marlowe, be safe. Let us know when you get home.]

Victoria: [Yes, be safe. Let us know when you get home.]

Marlowe felt touched by these simple words. They felt both unfamiliar and heartwarming. How long had it been since she heard words of concern?

She replied: [Okay, thank you. I had a great time today.]

Lila quickly responded: [Marlowe, don't be so polite with us. If you ever need anything, just let us know. Victoria and I can visit Jakarda City to hang out with you when we're free.]

Marlowe replied: [Sure, I'll make lots of delicious food for you when you come.]

Victoria immediately replied: [Food? That suits Lila, the foodie.]

Lila: [Marlowe, I don't have any dietary restrictions, as long as it's edible.]

Marlowe asked Victoria: [Victoria, what about you?]

Before Victoria could reply, Lila answered: [She doesn't have any restrictions either, but she prefers sweets.]

Seeing Lila's response, Victoria simply replied: [Yes.]

Marlowe remembered that during their two gatherings, Victoria had a particular fondness for desserts, and she made a mental note of it.

Grant, who had been sitting with his eyes closed, suddenly opened them. In the dimly lit car, his eagle-like eyes focused on Marlowe, who was looking down at her phone and typing away. The faint light from the phone illuminated her face, and he could clearly see the smile on her lips. Grant was momentarily stunned. 'She is smiling?'

But the next second, he remembered something, and a cold light flashed in his eyes.

"Are you happy?"

A cold voice sounded in Marlowe's ears. Her hand froze mid-typing, and a chill ran down her spine. She had forgotten that there was a man in the car who was eager to kill her.

Before she could think of how to respond, Grant's words, as cold as ice, pierced her ears.

"Do you think you deserve to be happy?" Grant said slowly.

The more unhurried his tone, the angrier and more terrifying he was.

Even Kevin Porter, who was driving, was scared.

Marlowe gripped her phone tightly, as if she wanted to crush it. Her body trembled involuntarily, and her heart felt like it was being cut by a thousand knives, spreading pain throughout her body. Her limbs were cold, and she felt a deep sense of injustice, but she couldn't say anything.

Suddenly, the partition in the car rose, and a look of fear flashed in Marlowe's eyes.
