Chapter 248 Are You Pregnant?
Victoria watched as Marlowe strolled over, looking all kinds of troubled.
"Marlowe, what's up?" she asked, genuinely concerned.
Marlowe plopped down next to Victoria, pulled a face, and stared at her. she blurted out, "Victoria, do you think I've packed on some pounds?"
Victoria was quiet for a sec. Before she could say anything, Marlowe pinched her cheeks and muttered, "Looks like I've really put on some weight."
But that didn't add up. Marlowe had been busting her butt lately. You'd think she'd be shedding pounds, not gaining them.
When Marlowe tried on clothes earlier, she found her usual size was tight, especially around the waist. Just like that, all her motivation to keep trying on clothes went out the window. Victoria gave Marlowe a once-over but didn't see any difference.
"Where'd you gain weight?" Victoria raised an eyebrow and gave Marlowe's chest a pointed look.
Marlowe followed Victoria's gaze and looked down.
"No, it's my waist. If you don't believe me, feel it." Marlowe grabbed Victoria's hand and placed it on her waist.
Victoria gave her waist a symbolic squeeze.
Then Victoria said seriously, "Yeah, maybe a little."
Marlowe felt even more bummed out. She knew it; the sales clerk had told her it was the clothes' fault.
"I haven't been pigging out, so how did I gain weight?" Marlowe was puzzled. Gaining weight around the waist was the worst. Thinking about going to eat barbecue later, she lost her appetite.
Lila came out of the fitting room and, not seeing Marlowe next door, wandered over. "Why'd you come here?"
Then Lila noticed something was off with Marlowe. "What's wrong?"
Marlowe was still lost in her thoughts about gaining weight and didn't answer Lila.
Victoria answered for her, "Marlowe found out she gained weight while trying on clothes and is feeling down about it."
Lila was silent. She hadn't realized Marlowe cared so much about her figure.
But then again, most women were pretty hung up on their body proportions.
Lila crossed her arms and touched her chin, giving Marlowe a once-over. "You do seem a bit rounder than before."
Marlowe felt like she'd been hit with a ton of bricks and lowered her head even more.
Victoria's mouth twitched.
Lila was known for her bluntness. The next second, a thought flashed through her mind. She leaned in and whispered, "Marlowe, are you pregnant?"
Marlowe's head shot up, her eyes wide with shock. "Lila, don't say that. I'm not."
Lila had thought of this because she'd seen some suspicious hickeys on Marlowe before.
"Did you and Grant use protection?" Lila asked pointedly.
Marlowe felt her face heat up, totally embarrassed and shy.
Victoria cleared her throat but kept quiet.
Marlowe mumbled, "We always do..."
Suddenly, a memory hit Marlowe like a ton of bricks. That night at the apartment, when Grant showed up outta nowhere, they hadn't used any protection.
Grant had been fuming that night and didn't bring any condoms. Marlowe thought she'd take a morning-after pill, but she must've forgotten.
Panic set in. 'Oh my God! Please don't joke about this.'
But Marlowe had indeed gained weight, and it was around her waist.
"Did you get your period this month?" Lila asked.
Marlowe tried to remember. "It was supposed to be last week, but isn't it normal to be a few days late?"
Her last sentence was shaky.
The two of them just stared at Marlowe, not saying a word.
Then Marlowe added, "But that doesn't make sense. It's only been about a month. Even if I were pregnant, I wouldn't be gaining weight this soon, right?"
Victoria calmly said, "Why don't you take a test and find out?"
Victoria's black Mercedes was parked in front of a pharmacy.
"Who's gonna buy it?" Marlowe, sitting in the back seat, leaned forward and looked at the two in the front seats.
None of them were virgins, but none had ever bought a pregnancy test before.
They had thought about going to the hospital, but Marlowe didn't want to risk Grant finding out. So, they hit up the pharmacy instead.
Victoria immediately said, "I don't really wanna go."
Both of them looked at Lila.
Lila sighed. "Fine, you win." Though she acted reluctant, she unbuckled her seatbelt, found a mask in Victoria's car, put it on, and got out.
Lila had a mission. She went straight to the pregnancy test section.
She grabbed three pregnancy tests, quickly paid, and bounced.
After Lila left, Clara emerged from behind a shelf.
She watched Lila get into the black, eye-catching Mercedes. She knew it was Victoria's car.
After the car left, Clara exited the pharmacy.
Clara had come to buy some anti-inflammatory meds. She had sprained her ankle while chasing Lucas, and Lucas had left her without a second glance.
She hadn't expected to run into Lila and saw her buying several pregnancy tests. 'So, is Lila pregnant? Or is it Victoria?'
A trace of jealousy and malice appeared in Clara's eyes, and her once-pretty face twisted with anger.
Victoria drove to Lila's place, which wasn't far from the apartment.
Victoria noticed more male items in the apartment, knowing they belonged to Owen.
After Marlowe went to the bathroom, the two sat quietly on the couch, waiting.
"Are you two planning to get hitched?" Victoria suddenly asked.
Lila snorted, her face full of rejection. "He wants to, but I don't."
Victoria raised an eyebrow. "Did he propose to you?"
